Every year, migrating Brant from the Eastern Arctic visit Shelburne County for six weeks before continuing their travels towards the North.
The Annual Shelburne County Birding Festival celebrates this event along with avid birdwatchers both from away and from home.
The events in Shelburne County start on Mar. 25 and people will meet at the Water Street Lighthouse B&B in Shelburne.
They will continue on to Baccaro Lighthouse for a 10:30 a.m. sea-watch where people will get a chance to view the birds with scopes.
Lunch will take place at the Old Schoolhouse in Barrington Passage at 12:15 p.m. and then the group will be off again for more birding at 1:30 p.m. to Cape Sable Island Important Birding Areas of the Hawk, Baker Flats and Daniel’s Head,
The tour will continue at 4:00 p.m. to the Seaside Heritage Centre in Clark’s Harbour where Pat Hudson coordinator for the Cape Sable Island’s Important Birding Area will show a power point presentation of her bird trip to New Zealand.
After the presentation at 5 p.m. supper will be served and a kitchen party will begin featuring Oen Kennedy with his repertoire of bird songs.
At dusk the group will be able to view the spectacle of the Brant Flyaway.
“At dusk the Brant create a blinding spectacle by taking to the air all at one time to leave for the night and to roost at sea,” says Allan Nelson President of Discover Shelburne County Tourism Association.
Sunday morning there will be a breakfast at the Shelburne Yacht Club.
Packages are available by calling Allan at 875-2331 either as a whole or in parts.
Registration is at the Water Street Lighthouse B&B Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. or Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
