Hazel Christina Millett – 95, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away Monday, March 5, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late Leslie and Helen “Nellie” (Ritchie) Dakin. She was involved for a number of years with the family business, Perry L. Millett and Sons Company Limited, New Minas. Hazel attended the New Minas Baptist Church, was also very fond of camping and loved to trailer with friends. She is survived by a son, Leslie “Sonny” (Carol) Millett, New Minas; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Jonathan) Levy, New Minas. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Perry L. Millett; a son, Louis; a brother, George and his wife, Evelyn. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007 in the New Minas Baptist Church. Reverend Doctor Robert Knowles officiated. Burial took place in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses. Brian Frederick Arsenault – 43, of Coldbrook, Kings County. It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that our family said their good-byes to Brian, who passed away at home on Monday, March 5, 2007 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Brian was married to his loving and devoted wife, Jackie (Kennedy) for 17 years. He was the proud father of two boys, Bradley Charles, 12, and Matthew Frederick, 9. He was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island on November 8, 1963 and was a son of Don and Muriel (Rouse) Arsenault. He had been employed as a computer programmer with Heritage Memorials Limited, Windsor for 16 years. The kindness and understanding shown by the Nelson family will never be forgotten. Brian is also survived by his brothers, David and Mike (Kathy); his sisters, Michelle (Jim), Cindy (Sonny) and Susan (Rejean); several nieces and nephews. Brian will be greatly missed and remembered fondly by his many friends and family. A special thank-you to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses and the palliative care team for their compassion and care during this time. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2007 and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p..m. Thursday, March 8, 2007 with prayers held at 8 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. Father Craig Christenson officiated. BELONG, Blanche J. - 94, of Jordan Branch Road, formerly of West Green Harbour, passed away in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point on March 6, 2007. Born in West Green Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Amos and Lena (Stuart) Hallett. Blanche was a member of the Independent Baptist Church in Lockeport. She was a caregiver to many people in her community. She was an avid quilter and homemaker. Blanche took part in a biography film called the “Gales of August” which was a documentary showing how the wives of fishermen survived following the 1927 disaster of the ship, Columbia out of Gloucester, Mass. Blanche will be sadly missed by her loving family and by all those who knew her. She is survived by son, Rev. Charles (Marilyn) Belong, Digby Co; daughters, Letitia (Mervyn) Buchanan, Stephens Road; Eileen Williams (Arthur MacKay), Jordan Branch; and by Ruth Scott whom she considered a daughter. She is also survived by grandchildren, Sharon and Renee Belong; Kelly Foote, Angela Smith, Mervin and Donald Buchanan and Patricia MacIntosh as well as two step-grandchildren, James and Amanda MacKay; 18 great grandchildren, two great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jeremiah Belong; brothers, Vincent, Amos and Forman Hallett; sisters, Lila Kohler, Ruth Enslow, Vera Scott and a great grandson. Funeral service was held on Friday, March 9, 2007 in the Independent Baptist Church, Lockeport with Rev. Timothy Garron officiating. Interment in St. Peters Anglican Church cemetery, West Green Harbour. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Alice M. Oickle — 67, of Liverpool passed away at home, Tuesday, March 6, 2007 after a very long illness. Born in Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late Stanley “Hank” and Dorothy (Drew) Roy. Alice loved to read, watch television and write Santa Claus letters at Christmas time to the children whom she loved very much. She will be sadly missed and in our hearts forever. She is survived by daughter, Mary Ann (Scott) Rhyno of Brooklyn; son, Billy Jr. (Wanda) at home; grandsons: Jonathan and Matthew Rhyno who she loved very much; brothers: Donnie (Beaty) and Victor (Betty) both of Lockeport; special sister-in-law, Dottie Fredericks; a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Billy. Funeral service was held Saturday, March 10 in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool; Rev. Arthur Nash officiated. Schulz, Eleanor – 84, of Ottawa, Ontario passed away suddenly at home on March 6, 2007. Born in North Williamston in 1922, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Reta (Charlton) Stevenson. Wife and best friend of the late Charles. Loving Mother of Derek (Roberta) and Ann (Hans). Loving grandmother of Kristy and Peter. Fondly remembered by Hilary and Phillip. Dear sister of Lois Bent, Middleton and Kay Boutilier, Sheet Harbour. She was a proud native of the Annapolis Valley, attended Teachers College in Truro, Nova Scotia and started her career in a one room school house. Eleanor relocated to Ottawa after marrying Charles, to raise her family. She could be counted on to throw in her helping hand wherever needed (ie: hospital, church, neighbours, friends). Eleanor was always happy to be a mother to those who needed one. The service was held on March 13, 2007 in Ontario. Gladys Josephine Mitchell - 82, Waterville, Kings Co. passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2007, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Cambridge Station, Kings Co. she was a daughter of the late Owen W. and S. Edna (Arenburg) Peterson. Gladys was an adherent of the Cambridge United Baptist Church. She had worked Simpson-Sears in Halifax for many years and at various other jobs during her life. She had a keen interest in gardening and enjoyed being in her own home. She had a love of animals and feeding wild birds. She enjoyed doing crafts, quilting, making afghans and socks for family and friends. Surviving are her children, Margaret (Allan) Loomer, Windsor, Hants Co.; Trueman Nauss, Vancouver, B.C.; Lindsay (Anne) Nauss, Somerset, Kings Co.; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brother, Floyd (Gwen) Peterson, Kentville; sisters, Hazel Johnson, Halifax; Helen (Bill) Hiltz, Rockland, Kings Co.; Joyce Mosher, Halls Harbour, Kings Co.; several nieces and nephews. Her daughter, Mary Dale Lloyd (Cambridge Station), has since passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2007. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Mitchell; brothers, Lawrence, Oren, Kenneth, Murray, Donald and Maxwell Peterson; sister, Elsie Kirkland. TRASK, Mary Ellen - 53, Bridgetown/Cambridge Station. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Sydney and Yetive (Herbert) Trask. She passed away in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton, on March 7, 2007. She is survived by brothers, Jim and Bill; sisters, Beth, Ann, Diane, and Debby. Smith, Phyllis Irene - age 76, of St. Croix, Hants County, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at the Q.E. II, New Halifax Infirmary, Halifax. Born on November 28, 1930, in Windsor, Hants County, she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (Caldwell) McCurdy. Phyllis enjoyed her crossword puzzles, her flower garden and was a faithful follower of the Larry King and Nancy Grace TV shows. She will be greatly missed by her family, and by her friends. She is survived by her children, Gary, David, and Dorene, all at home; Grannie’s little pet, ‘Maggie Ann’; grandsons, Ian Caldwell (Charmaine Shiers), and Alex Smith; great-grandson, Logan Paul Caldwell; special niece, Debbie (Lawrence) Dykens, Three Mile Plains, and their children, John and Tracey; sisters, Mildred (Billy) Benner, Windsor; Alexis Smith, Ellershouse; brother, Angus (Carol) Harvey, Wentworth Road; several other nieces and nephews.
