March 4, 2007 to March 10, 2007 Wayne Alexander Rolfe - 40, of Waterville, Kings Co., passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, March 4, 2007. Born in Thunder Bay Ont., he was the son of Norma Rolfe, Waterville and the late Herman Rolfe. Wayne will be remembered best for his occupational pride as a heavy duty bus and transport mechanic, playing knowledgeable handyman at home, listening to AC/DC music, bass fishing and his love for his family pets. Besides his mother, Wayne is survived by his common law wife, Kathy Daniels, Waterville; sisters, Glendene Schardt, Sioux Lookout, Ont. Lynn (Glenn) Rolfe and Holly (Bill) Rolfe both of Thunder Bay Ont.; grandmother Gladys Rolfe, Windsor.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. There was a celebration of Wayne’s life on Friday, March 9, 2007 at 7 p.m. in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, NS., B0P 1E0 (902-538-9900). March 4, 2007 to March 10, 2007 Ada Louise Illsley - 86, Waterville, Kings Co. passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Waterville, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Annie (Rafuse) Smith. Ada was a long-time member of the Waterville Baptist Church and was a person of strong faith. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch # 69, Berwick. Ada’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy and happiness. Surviving are sons, Ivan (Diane) Wentzell, Waterville; Gary (Bonnie) Wentzell, Berwick; grandchildren, Shelly (Dale) Trueman, Waterville; Kelly (Heather) Wentzell, Waterville; Holly (Rob Trahan) Wentzell, Morristown; Christy (Kyle Johnson) Wentzell, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Nicole Wentzell; Makencee Trueman; Kellcee and Jakkob Wentzell; brother, Keith Smith, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husbands, Maurice Wentzell; Vincent “Vince” Illsley; sisters, Ruth Smith; Polly Murphy; Christine Rhys; brother, Ronald Smith. Visitation for Ada was held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S. B0P 1E0 (902-538-9900). Funeral service was held 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, in the Waterville Baptist Church, 1243 Mill St., Waterville. Pastor Randy Crozier officiated. Burial was in the Berwick Cemetery. March 4, 2007 to March 10, 2007 SURETTE, Marie Gertrude – 89, Olsen’s Nursing Home, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born 23 November, 1917 in Pinkney’s Point, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Eva (Melanson) Surette. Gertrude was a homemaker, and she loved music. Surviving are her three sons, Gerald Surette, Chegoggin; Clarence Surette, Hebron; Gary (Darlene) Surette, Hubbard’s Point; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Madden, Belleville; brothers, Vincent (Frances) Surette, Melbourne; Gerald (Josephine) Surette, Yarmouth. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Crosby; brothers, Eugene Surette and Benjamin Surette; a sister, Irene Surette. Visitation will take place from 7-9 Tuesday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10 AM, Wednesday, March 7, from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. March 4, 2007 to March 10, 2007 PATTERSON, Bernard "Malcolm" - 82, Tusket, died March 4, 2007, in Tidal View Manor. Born in Yarmouth on June 26, 1924, he was the only child of the late Sheridan Larry and Alta (Hurlbert) Patterson (Tusket, Yarmouth Co.). He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He served in the RCAF during the years of 1943-1946. He was a graduate of the Academy of Advanced Traffic, New York, and was passenger traffic manager for American Home Products Corporation, New York. He was a member of the National Railway Historical Society and the Electrical Railroaders Association. As a result of his father's death in 1967, Malcolm returned home to Tusket from New York to be with his mother. He became well-known for his generosity to many local and provincial charities. He was a faithful member of St. Stephen Anglican Church in Tusket where for many years he prepared the church for Sunday services given by local clergy. By request, there will be no visitation. The funeral service was held Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 61 William St., Yarmouth, with Father Robert Coote officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Tusket Cemetery. A reception followed at 3 p.m. in Yarmouth County Museum at 22 Collins St., Yarmouth. No flowers by request, donations may be made to the Yarmouth County Historical Society, YMCA of Yarmouth, Victorian Order of Nurses, Yarmouth Branch or The Salvation Army. March 4, 2007 to March 10, 2007 GATES, Robert Elton – 79, Kemptville, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2007 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 1, 1927 in Lynn, Mass., he was a son of the late Joseph William and Marion Charlotte (Jeffrey) Gates. Bob was a retired supervisor with the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests, and he also served with the United States Navy, for a time. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was also a hunting guide. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary (Murphy) Gates; sons, Robert (Deanna) Gates, Springfield; Bruce (Linda) Gates, Mark Gates and daughter-in-law, Debbie Gates, both of Kemptville; Bill (Annie), Mount Uniacke; Also surviving are grandchildren, Shelley (Shane) Lyons, Riverview; Colin Gates, Melanie (Brian) Roberts, both of Yarmouth; Ian (Ginger) Gates, Jeff (Jennifer) Gates, and their baby-to-be, both of Kemptville; Becky (Chris) Fitzgerald, Pleasant Valley; Timothy Gates, Halifax; Lisa Gates, Mount Uniacke; great grandchildren, Julia, Wyatt, Madison, Bryson, Jarron, Monica, Hunter, Ryan. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, William Joseph “Bill” Gates and Roy Frank Gates. Cremation has taken place, and a private family service and burial will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice. March 4, 2007 to March 10, 2007 Ronald Everett Fraser – 71, formerly of South Alton, Kings County, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Scott’s Bay, he was a son of the late Wesley and Minnie (Huntley) Fraser. He had been employed as a milkman for both Jordan’s and Cornwallis Dairies. He would have delivered milk throughout Kings County. He was later employed as a roofer with T. P. Calkin Limited. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and watching the Toronto Blue Jays. He is survived by a daughter, Vivian (Garth) Bezanson, South Alton; two sons, Wesley (Laura), Alberta; Mark, South Alton; two sisters, Lillian Brown, North Alton and Dorothea (Jared) Stevenson, Blockhouse; a brother, Charles (Debbie), Arlington; a granddaughter, Jamie; five grandsons, Greg, David, Tim, Sam and Trevor; a great granddaughter, Jennica; nieces and nephews; a special friend, Jean, Pereau and their dog, Toro. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Velma Medicraft; a daughter, Kathy; a sister, Marjorie; two brothers, Eugene and Harold. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Chaplain Mary Anne Doherty-Fleet officiated. Born in Saskatchewan, she was a daughter of the late Levite and Alice (Young) Melanson. She was a loving and devoted mother. She is survived by five daughters, Barbara (Marvin) Hansen, Wolfville Ridge; Mary Gee (Raymond Dewar) and Alice (Clifford) Morse, both of Kentville; Becky, Cambridge, Ontario; Lisa (Bruce) Tanner, Wolfville Ridge; three sons, Norman (Ronda), Kentville; William Jr. “Bill” (Rosalind), Cambridge, Ontario; Lee (Sandy), Canaan; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; three sisters, Theresa and Ella, British Columbia; Mary, Middleton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William “Bill”; a brother, Ernest and a brother, in infancy. Visitation was held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2007 with prayers held at 8 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2007 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. Father Craig Christenson officiated. Born in Nicholsville, Kings Co. she was a daughter of the late Seward and Annie (Creemer) Foster. Mildred was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of Trinity Pentecostal Church, Greenwood, and the Autumnaires Seniors Group and was a former member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Auburn. Surviving are son, Dean Bruce; daughter, Maxine Bruce, both of Auburn; son-in-law, Patrick Carter, Middleton; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Smeltzer of Wolfville; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Emery George Bruce; sons, Everett (Alberta) and Clinton Bruce; daughter, Beulah Carter. There was visitation for Mildred from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 9, in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S. B0P 1E0 (902-538-9900). The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 20 Morden Rd., Auburn. Rev. Charles Bull officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Ida (Harvey) Young. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are nieces Jean Young and Leona Tupper; stepdaughter, Shirley (McDowell) Acker; stepgranddaughters, Linda McDowell and Shelley Acker; stepgrandson, David Acker; great-stepgranddaughter Monica Zwicker and great- great-stepgranddaughter, Mikaylah Zwicker. Maybelle was predeceased by her husband Robert McDowell, brothers, Harry and Romley Young; sister, Nellie (Young) Leitch; niece, Helen Young; stepson, Jack McDowel;, stepdaughter-In-law. Ruby McDowell and a great-stepgranddaughter Sharon Zwicker. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held Thursday, March 8, at 11 a.m. in H.C.
