February 25, 2007 to March 3, 2007 continued GREENWOOD, Loran Davis – 93, Elm Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born October 8, 1913 in Shelburne County, he was a son of the late Delbert and Edith (Nickerson) Greenwood. He worked as an inspector with the provincial government, and was also a driver for Acadian Bus Lines. He was a veteran of the second World War, having served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army, 23rd Fusiliers, Tank Battalion. Loran was an adherent of Beacon United Church, and was a former volunteer with the Yarmouth Food Bank, as well as a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61, Yarmouth. Surviving are his son, David (Rodena) Greenwood, Riverview, NB; grandchildren, Robert Greenwood, Stephen Greenwood, Catherine Woods and Peter Greenwood; great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Susannah, Victoria and Kristen Greenwood; Nicholas Woods; McKenzie and Colton Greenwood; a brother, Thomas Lowe, Shelburne. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Nella Mae (Peache) Greenwood; a sister, Marguerite Goodick; brothers, Grant Lowe, Kenneth Thomas and Fernwood Lowe. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held at 10:30 AM, Monday, March 5, from H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Rev. Leslie Robinson officiated. Interment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation, or to a charity of choice. February 25, 2007 to March 3, 2007 continued Suzanne Gay “Sue” Whalen – 63, of Canaan, Kings County, passed away Friday, March 2, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was a foster daughter of the late Edward and Mildred Rand. She was a member of the Canaan Good Neighbour Club, an avid card player and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch 6, Kentville. Sue was a homemaker who was very devoted to her family and will be fondly remembered for her positive attitude, cheerful disposition and her infectious smile. She is survived by two daughters, Vanessa (Cory) Broome, Canaan; Lisa Whalen (Daryl Bloom), Pennsylvania, USA; two step-daughters, Marilyn Crumpler, Paradise, Annapolis County; Hope (Brian) Benedict, Canaan; three step-sons, Fred (Anne) Whalen, Somerset; Peter Whalen, Toronto; Bryce (Sharon) Whalen, Canaan; four grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, ten step-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, David Whalen. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Reverend John McNally officiated. Family flowers only, by request. February 25, 2007 to March 3, 2007 continued Carolyn Maud Rafuse - 84 of Glenmont, Kings Co., passed away peacefully at home on March 2, 2007. Born in Sheffield Mills, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie (Rockwell) Webster. Carolyn married and moved to Sudbury, Ontario, and then to Val Caron, Ontario, where she lived for almost 30 years. In 1985, after her husband Charlie retired, she moved to Monetville, Ontario and spent 30 years there, before returning to Nova Scotia in 2006 to be with her brother Robie. For years, she was an active member of the Calvary Mennonite Church in Monetville. She volunteered as a nurse and provided palliative care and support for people in the community. She was also an active member of the Women’s Institute in Ontario. Her hobbies included crafts, collecting antiques and music. She will always be remembered for her musical ability. She loved to play the piano and was often asked to play in church and at local get-togethers. After service on Sundays, she would give moving renditions of her favourite songs, especially “Amazing Grace”. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Bill) Speer of Kitchener, Ontario; and one sister, Eleanor Corkum, Windsor, NS. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Rafuse; brothers, Robie and Ralph Webster and sister Winnifred. Visitation was held Wednesday, March 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville (902-678-2151) from where the funeral service was held Thursday, March 8, at 2:30 p.m. with a reception following. Rev. Peter Lohnes officiated. Burial took place in the Canard Burial Grounds, Canard. Donations in memory of Carolyn may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation. Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Doris Ingrid (Semrau) Hartlen. She was owner-operator of M&B Home Care. She is survived by husband, Timothy; daughters, Kim (Steven Mouton) of Brooklyn, Julie of Milton; grandchildren: Emma and Jordan Moulton and Tyler, Tenesha and Tyson Foster; sisters, Annette (Marlene Gaudet) of Sandy Cove, Angela (Robert) of Hamilton, Ont.; brother, Steven (Vanessa Tanner) of Liverpool; nieces and nephews: Nicholas and Nathaniel Dagley, Megan, Naomi, Shelbie, Colby, Rebecca, Riley Hartlen, Kyle Hartlen; best friend, Tish Fisher, plus many other friends in the community. Funeral Service was held Tuesday, March 6 from Milton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ; Rev. Jennifer Garbin officiated. Family flowers only. February 25, 2007 to March 3, 2007 continued Martha Jane Weir - 92, Kentville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 27, 2007, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Greenfield, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Selina (Davidson) Harris. Martha was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a faithful member of Wolfville Ridge Baptist Church and New Minas 50 plus Seniors Group. Martha enjoyed playing cards with her friends. She will be sadly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, especially her loving family. Surviving are daughter, Charlene (Paul) Taylor, Kentville; sons, Brian (Cathy), Kentville; Robert (Sandy), Coldbrook, and Gordon (Betty), New Minas; grandchildren, Lynn Weir, Tracey Weir, Christian Taylor, Jeffrey Weir, and Chardell Brydon; great-grandchildren, Kyle Brydon and Mataya Brydon; many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Lester, Martha was predeceased by son, Gerald; grandson, Joey Weir; sisters, Evelyn, Blanche, and Mina; brothers, Walter, Wesley, Roy, and George. There was no visitation at the family's request. A celebration of Martha's life was held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville (902-678-2151). Rev. Bob Burbidge and Rev. Gary Manthorne officiated, with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, at a later date. February 25, 2007 to March 3, 2007 continued Elliott Walter Cook — Passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, in Port Alberni, BC, at the age of 75. He was born April 3, 1931 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Elliott was pre-deceased by his father, Walter Henry, and his mother Elizabeth Bernice. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mildred; his children: Rex, Linda (Bob), Dave (Rita), Kevin, Wade (Lori); ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Estelle Brissette; and family in Wilmington North Carolina, as well as many other relatives in Port Alberni, Nova Scotia, and USA. Elliott moved to Port Alberni in 1957 and worked in the pulp mill. In early 1958, Mildred and their young son Rex joined Elliott in Port Alberni, where he became a well-known commercial fisherman who had fished both coasts, up until his retirement in 2005. He was one of the three original members that were instrumental in getting Robertson Creek hatchery started, and was a very outspoken advocate in the political field. Elliott had a love of the outdoors, as an avid hunter, as well as a sports fisherman. Being a man who possessed a zest for life and who gathered many friends along the way, you could often find him enjoying a coffee and sharing his wit with friends. He was always there to lend a helping hand. Elliott will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Elliott’s life was held Saturday, March 10, at the Chapel of Memories Funeral Home; Rev. William Hudson officiated. February 25, 2007 to March 3, 2007 continued Nancy Elizabeth Leaman — (July 5, 1960 to March 2, 2007) Passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax on Friday, March 2, 2007. Born in Liverpool, Queens County, she was the daughter of William A. (Bud) and Fern J. (Getson) Leaman. Nancy was raised and went to school in Queens County. After high school, she completed a two-year cosmetology course at Lunenburg Regional Vocational School. She achieved the first 100% ever documented on her final cut and opened her own business (Na Lea’s) before she was 20 years of age. She later achieved her Masters in Hairdressing. After her two sons were born, she chose to make it a priority to raise them. During this time she volunteered throughout the community in all respects of life. In the last few years, she completed a Degree in Accounting and moved to Halifax where she was employed until her illness. Nancy achieved many accomplishments in her short lifetime, too numerous to mention. She took on many wonderful challenges and excelled at everything she did. Anyone who knew Nancy discovered she was amazing — a true sister, daughter, mother, and friend. Nancy was passionate about knowledge, music, art, her dogs, a great conversation over a good cup of creamy coffee or tea, and most importantly, her boys. Besides her parents, Nancy is survived by her two devoted sons, Solomon and Schuyler Vromans of Halifax; sisters: Sally Kaulback (Stacy), Sharon Ullock (Harry), Muriel Mosher (Joe Miller); brother, Mark Leaman (Margo); four nephews: Michael, Jeffrey, Adam Ullock, Joshua Kaulback; four nieces: Paige, Nicole, and Amy Mosher, and Grace Leaman. Nancy is also survived by her “second family”, a group of loving and fiercely loyal friends who ensured Nancy’s wish to remain at home as long as possible was granted. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Homes, Sackville. A Celebration of Nancy’s life is planned for family and close friends at a later date. No flowers by request.
