Oxford Terrace razed by fire
Within a seven-day period Yarmouth experienced two fires that destroyed a residence and an apartment house.
Following the Kempt Street blaze the apartment house at the corner of Albert and William Street was destroyed. The page at 8:18 a.m. eventually brought out all YFD equipment, along with the mutual aid call to Port Maitland, Wedgeport and Eel Brook, the latter standing by at the Yarmouth station.
Engine 4 wasn’t on scene very long before heavy smoke became evident both from the front and rear and fire raced through the second floor.
As the fire progressedl, firefighters were forced to retreat to the street and fight the fire from there. The freezing conditions also make it much more difficult. Under these conditions a lot of hard work was accomplished and a commendable job by all firefighters.
NOT THE FIRST TIME
It was just a few years ago on Nov. 15, 2003, that this same building was badly damaged by fire as a 12:45 a.m.. blaze caused much damage to the top floor.
THANK YOU
During the above mentioned fire food and hot drinks were transported to the scene. The members of the Yarmouth Fire Department wish to thank Tim Hortons, Sobey’s and Knights of Columbus 2181 for their thoughtfulness. A hot cup of coffee and a bite to eat goes a long way during these situations. Also thanks to the Port Maitland, Wedgeport and District and Eel Brook and District departments for their quick response and assistance.
LEVEL 2 INSTRUCTION
Approximately 16 firefighters assembled at the Yarmouth fire hall on Saturday, March 3 to be tested for their Hazmat operators certification. David Nash, an instructor at the Nova Scotia Fire School, was in attendance testing each in the operation as part of those taking their level 2 firefighters course.
BOWLING POSTPONED
Because of the bad weather bowling was postponed. The first week of playoffs will begin this Tuesday.
BATTERY RECALLED
Lithium-ion extended life batteries used in IBM ThinkPad notebook computers, over 100,000 sold, are being recalled as they may pose a hazard to users if the battery in the laptop is struck forcefully on the corner, such as a direct fall to the ground. The battery pack can overheat and pose a fire hazard. This is not an internal battery cell defect. The recalled 9 cell batteries have the following part number which can be found on the battery label – FRU P/N 92P 1131
150 YEARS
During 1857 two companies were formed giving the Yarmouth Fire Department two pumper companies, St. George and Naiad and adding a third, Reliance and a ladder company. These two new companies came on stream 20 years after the establishment of the YFD.
Community Spirit
Anthony SaulnierArticle online since March 9th 2007
Hi, my name is Anthony Saulnier. Some of you reading this probably know me, since I am from Yarmouth.
It kind of made me sad to learn about the fire on Kempt st; I grew up right across the road at 8 Kempt st and I knew the owners of the house quite well. They were very nice people. And then there was the fire on William & Albert St.
It's great to hear about how members of communities and municipalities come together in times of need. This has always been a great characteristic of communities in Nova Scotia, including Yarmouth and Yarmouth County. I have seen it many times when I lived in Yarmouth and served with the Yarmouth Fire Department and it's something that I miss. You dont often get that in the big cities.
I do want to say to the volunteer firefighters of Nova Scotia, in particular Yarmouth County, keep up the good work, whether or not you realize it, you really deserve to be proud of yourselves.
