Charles Edward Mader – 89, of Kentville, formerly of New Minas, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 3, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Charles Nathan and Elizabeth (Jamieson) Mader. He is survived by his children, Marlene, Maryellen (Larry), Margo (Darrell), Michele (Darren) and Charles (Christine); grandchildren, Adam and Karlina Gravitis (Marlene), Amber and Alexander Savage (Maryellen), Amanda and Megan Coxhead (Michele) and Rachel Mader (Charles); step-grandchildren, Amanda and Samantha McCullough (Christine); sisters-in-law, Grace Mader and Sisters of Charity, Nora, Pauline and Virginia Deal. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Phyllis Isabel (Deal); brothers, Arthur, Frank and Gerald Mader. Charles was a longtime alumnus of St. Mary’s University, Halifax, having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1937. He later received his Bachelor of Education from Dalhousie University. He was employed by Equifax Services, Canada until his retirement. He enjoyed politics and served as returning officer for Kings North for several years. He was a devoted husband and father, who will be sadly missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the physicians and nursing staff who cared for Charlie in his final days, as well as his caregivers and friends from Rosedale. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. A memorial mass was held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2007 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. Father Craig Christenson officiated with Deacon Eric Duggan as Homilist. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital or the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Brown, Velma Joan – 65 of Digby, died Feb. 25 at the home of her sister Yuanita in Conway. Cremation has taken place.

Thompson, Charles Henry - passed away at the Campbellford Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, February 27, 2007. He was 87 years old. He lived in Norwood where he shared a home with his daughter Alilee and Debbie Drummond. Charlie was born in Yarmouth (Overton), Nova Scotia and is the last in a family of ten. He was the oldest member of the Donegal Fiddlers Orchestra. He will be sadly missed by his children Richard (Maria) Thompson of Edmonton, Gail (Gerald) Jones of Madoc, Jeannie McLean of Oshawa, Alilee Thompson of Norwood and Peggy (Garry) Hollister of Ingleside. He was the dear Grandpa of Kelvin (Navi), Sheila, Wesley, Royce (Amanda), Sheldon (Anne Marie), Tim, Garnett, Jay and Julia. He was the Great-Grandpa of Jonah, Luke, Kaylan, Kyle, Shannon and Landon. He was predeceased by his son Larry (1997), wife Lennie (1958), wife Jean (1985), seven brothers and two sisters. Charles' death will leave a big hole in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He will be fondly remembered by his many dear friends. A celebration of his life was held in the Millenium Room, Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre, 88 Alma St., Norwood on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice as expressions of sympathy. Comeau, Alphee – 65 of Meteghan, died Feb. 28 at home. Funeral was held in Scared Heart Church, Saulnierville. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Saulnier, (Comeau) Alma Marie – 80 of Saulnierville, died Feb. 28. Funeral was held in Ste. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment in Acadie.

Ross, Donald Arthur – Passed away in Hants Community Hospital on March 1, 2007, at age 80. Born in Somerville, Mass, U.S.A., he was a son Chester R. and Irene (Spence) Ross of St. Croix. In 1943, Don entered the Bank of Nova Scotia in Windsor, and was transferred to many places in the Maritimes. During his career, he was the first manager of a new branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia in Montreal. He worked for Herbert Byrant Ltd., Halifax, as retail credit manager for a number of years. He is survived by sisters, Barbara Pickering, Michigan, U.S.A., and Patricia Adamson, St. Croix; brother, Glenn, Hantsport. He was predeceased by his parents, and sisters, Dr. Beatrice Buszek and Ruth Ettinger. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Hants Community Hospital for their care and support. Wilfred J. Kennedy - 77, West Brooklyn, passed away peacefully at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, March 1, 2007, with his loving family by his side. Born in Wallbrook, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Frank and Ella (Croft) Kennedy. Wilfred was a bricklayer for over 40 years. Wilfred is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Myrtle (Pinch), West Brooklyn; daughters, Susan (Todd) Millett, Gaspereau; Valerie, Kentville; Teresa Kennedy (Mike), Hortonville; sons, Brian, at home; Phillip (Verna), Liverpool; Daren, West Brooklyn; Troy (Rachel), Tantallon, as well as nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Bernice (Don) Furlot, Greenwood; Shirley (Jim) Weatherbee, Berwick; brothers, Barrie (Waneta), Calgary; John (Carolyn), West Brooklyn. Besides his parents, Wilfred was predeceased by brothers Roy, Albert, and Hugh, and by a sister, Marie in infancy. No visitation or funeral service by family request. There will be a private family Graveside Service in the West Brooklyn Cemetery at a later date. Smith, Lamont Starratt "Buster" - 74, Hants Border, sadly passed away at his home, where he was born, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 1, 2007. Born March 11, 1932, he was a son of the late Walter and Elta (Starratt) Smith. He was a member of the Navy for five years, he drove tractor trailer for many years, and worked on the family farm. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, the former Freda Magee; daughters, Marlene (Stephen) Hebb, Falmouth; Karlene (Larry) Zwicker, Martock; Sandra (Bill) Faulkner, Bishopville; Donna (Randy) Boutilier, Falmouth; sons, Walter, Garlands Crossing; Micheal (Michele), Windsor; Fred (Lana), Hantsport; Shawn (Sue), Three Mile Plains; brothers, Laurie (Betty), Kentville; Bucky (Donna), Hants Border; sisters, Karleen (Mel) Hebb, Bishopville; Mary (Earl) Harvey, Hants Border; 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Riley, Ronald Henry "Pup" - 85, Newport Station, passed away Friday, March 2, 2007, in Haliburton Place, Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born November 14, 1921 in Three Mile Plains, he was a son of the late Robie E. Sr. and Elizabeth (Whitehead) Riley. Ron worked for N.S. Power for 43 years, retiring in 1974. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Helen Maude Caldwell; sons, Dwight (Judy), Tonge Hill, Windsor; Angus (Frances), Three Mile Plains; Steven (Sandra), Newport Station; Larry, Newport Station; sister, Joyce Riley, Three Mile Plains; brothers, Calvin Riley, Three Mile Plains; Basil Riley, Newport Station; 11 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren. MacDonald, Irma Ruth - 80, of Middleton, Annapolis County passed away Friday, March 02, 2007 at home. Born in Sanford, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Leverett & Anna Faye (Shaw) Coker. Irma had been a born again Christian since 1960. She was very protective and loving of her family and passed on her strengths and values to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Irma had great faith and believed that God protected her and her family and she was comforted in the belief that when she passed on she would be loved and taken care of eternally. She was not afraid and this gives her family great strength. She lived in Toronto for nearly 40 years, having worked for some 20 years of that time. Irma is survived by daughters; Bonnie Amero, Berwick; Margaret Duval (Lionel French), Whitby, Ont.; son, Charles (Joyce), Berwick; grandchildren: Heather (Glendon) Miller; Allison Amero; Jason (Theresa) Amero; Melissa (Neison) Bard; Stephen (Kelley) MacDonald; Craig MacDonald; Michelle and Johnny Duval; brother, Harold (Connie) Coker, Whitby, Ont.
