As the crowd of teachers, students and fans trickle into the gymnasium at Lockeport Regional High School March 5 one person whistles the tune ‘We are the Champions’ to himself.
Over the loudspeaker the opening lines of the same song roar out in earnest as both the senior girls and boys basketball players - all provincial champions - enter the gymnasium.
Holding banners and wearing smiles, the teams do their victory march around their applauding fans.
It is a great day for Lockeport. Both teams came back from the March 3 weekend Division IV Nova Scotia School Athletic Association Senior Basketball Provincial Championship in Cape Breton with wins for the second year in a row.
One of the three coaches, Andy Stuart holds up his Tim Horton’s coffee and shouts out: “This is truly a very large double-double victory.”
Cheers and applause thunder for the champions.
The Senior Boys won their final game 55 to 44 and the Senior Girls won 49 to 35.
“It feels pretty good,” said Senior Girls team player, Lindsay Barclay, who is in her last year at Lockeport Regional High School. “It feels really good to go out with a bang.”
