Shag Harbour funded for new ground-out
South Shore-St. Margaret’s MP Gerald Keddy announced March 5 funding for a new ground-out bed in Shag Harbour.
A ground-out bed, which consists of a concrete slab built on grade, serves as a working platform for fishermen to maintain their vessels.
At low tide, the vessel is placed on a cradle for the necessary work. According to a Fisheries and Oceans Canada press release, the project will greatly assist fishermen by allowing them to inspect and service their vessels in a timely manner. A ground-out bed may also be used to launch vessels.
The $79,300 funding announcement also includes reconstruction of a ground-out bed at Dublin Shore. The provincial government provided The Harbour Authority of Shag Harbour and Dublin Shore with $10,000 each for the projects.
The investment, combined with projects previously announced by the federal government, brings the support from Small Craft Harbours in Nova Scotia this year to $17.5 million.
These projects are being implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program in cooperation with the Harbour Authorities that manage and operate the facilities for local users.
Keddy made the announcement on behalf of Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.
A Harbour Authority representative wasn’t available for comment March 5.
