February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued Beatrice H. Meister - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Beatrice Meister of New Ross. She and her twin sister, Beulah, were born on July 21, 1916 to S. Wilson Freeman and Tempe Melissa (Russell) Freeman of Pleasant River, Nova Scotia. Beatrice was the last surviving member of that family. During her ninety years, she filled many roles. For 56 years she was the wife of the late Rex Meister, New Ross. She was the mother of Karl (Alice) Meister and Robert (Paulette) Meister. For David, Sean, Joseph, Daniel and Amy Meister she was a beloved grandmother, and to dozens of nieces and nephews, she was “Aunt B”. Most of her 32 years as a school teacher were spent in the schools of New Ross, where she also served as a long-time member of the Home and School Association. Throughout her life, her great love was her church work. During her long years of membership in the New Ross Baptist Church, she served on nearly every committee and, most notably, was a faithful Sunday School teacher and superintendent as well as youth group leader and choir member. Within the community she was a tireless volunteer worker and canvasser, and was the recipient of several awards and commendations in recognition of her service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7p.m. to 9p.m. Friday, February 23, 2007. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2007 in the New Ross United Baptist Church. Reverend David Hine officiated. Burial will take place at a later date in the New Ross United Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers from the immediate family only. Donations in memory may be made to the New Ross United Baptist Church or the Arthritis Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued MARTYN, Margaret Phyllis – 91, of Nictaux, NS passed away Sunday, February 18, 2007 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Nictaux West she was a daughter of the late Avard and Lunette (Saunders) Neily. Margaret loved all things in the world of nature and “took time to smell the roses” along the way. She marveled at sunsets, starry night skies, the birds and the animals. Her wonderful sense of humour was enjoyed by all who met her and continued even through her illness. She is survived by daughter, Carole (Frank) Longley, Lawrencetown; sons, Robert, Toronto, ON, Jim (Vickie), Smith’s Cove, Kevin (Karen), Coquitlam, BC, “adopted daughter” Juanita (Art) Witham, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Frank (Kim) Longley, Owen Sound, ON, Ken (Alison) Longley, New Westminster, BC, David Longley (Nancy Vanasse), North Williamston, Tracey Martyn (Crissy), Chilliwack, BC, Cindy Comeau (Darren Boyd), Digby, Chase Martyn, Bryce Martyn and Trent Martyn all of Coquitlam, BC and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Egbert; brother Ingram; sisters, Edna, Myrtle, Bernice, Marjorie, Ruby and Ethel. Funeral service was held Thursday, February 22 in the Nictaux Baptist Church. Rev. Bill McLeod officiated. Interment in Nictaux Cemetery, was followed by a reception at the Christian Family Center. By request, family flowers only. February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued Rev. C. Blaine - 77, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Monday, February 19, 2007, at home. Born in Windsor, he was the son of the late H. Carleton and Josephine (Sexton) Smith. Upon graduating from Kings Edgehill School, Windsor, he then went to Kings College and Dalhousie University, Halifax. After his schooling, he headed for western Canada, where he was ordained at the Knox Metropolitan United Church, Regina, Sask., in 1958. In addition to his service as a minister, Rev. Smith also worked as a high school principal and a probation officer. In 1976, Rev. Smith founded the Oyedeji Home Ministry, the ministry was very near and dear to his heart. Rev. Smith had a very strong interest in music, he was a very accomplished pianist and he also studied opera at the Maritime Conservatory of Music. Rev. Smith was a well-known and well-liked gentleman who will be dearly missed by his many friends. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A public graveside interment service will be held in the spring in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor (date and time will be announced). Donations in memory of Rev. C. February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued RAFUSE, Gertrude Edna "Gertie" - 92, Upper Vaughan, Hants Co. It is with broken hearts that the family of Gertie Rafuse announces her peaceful passing early Thursday, February 22, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, with her son Leslie by her side and her daughter Evelyn in her heart. Born on October 16, 1914, in East Gore, Hants Co., she was the daughter of the late Sedley and Mary (McDougall) Kilcup. Gertie has touched the hearts of many people throughout her life, through her devotion to Upper Vaughan Baptist Church and her Ladies Aide Society. As a member of both, she lovingly took part in, and provided for the various functions that enabled her to give to her family, friends and community. Gertie found such joy in being with family and friends, and so loved attending the card parties at the Upper Vaughan Community Hall and the "Jam Sessions" at Camp Mockingee. Gertie also looked forward to the summer months when she could be with her friends on Sundays at Sherwood Baptist Church. For years, Gertie worked for the Eastern Stock Horse Association riding camps. She also worked at the Mockingee Youth Camp. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by daughters, Evelyn Rafuse, Upper Vaughan; son, Leslie (Maureen) Rafuse, Mantua; grandchildren, Prudi (Jack) Zinck, Roger (Tanya) Rafuse, Jessica, Kaitlyn and Nicholas Rafuse; chosen grandchildren, Monika, Stephanie, and Braxton; great-grandchildren, Autumn and Lilyanne. She was predeceased by her first husband, Roland H. Faulkner; second husband of 50 years, Marcus Leslie Rafuse; son-in-law, Paul Rafuse; great-grandson, Jack Zinck Jr.; brother, Murray Kilcup; cousin, Jessie Rhyno. February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued Douglas Bernard Aker, 67 of St. Stephen, NB, passed away unexpectantly at Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday February 23, 2007. Born in Windsor, NS, he was the son of the late Robert and Violet (Matheson) Aker. He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene (Gillis), two wonderful sons, Gordie Aker of St. Stephen, NB and Tony Aker of Fredericton, NB, two brothers, Robert Aker of Newport Station, NS, and Walter (Mutt) Aker of New Ross Road, Hants County, NS, three sisters, Ruby Barker of Pembroke, Ontario, Minnie (Calvin) Riley of Three Mile Plains, NS and Juanita (Toot) Davidson of Port Williams, NS. He is also survived by his much loved mother and father-in-law, Doris and Mike Gillis of St. Stephen, NB, many nieces, nephews and friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents, 4 sisters, Doris, Pauline (Mrs. Cecil Briggs), Goldie (Mrs. Malcolm Redmond) and Mary (Mrs. Veron Redden), 5 brothers, Gordon, George, Lawrence, Ralph and Edgar. Doug was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 26 years, then worked as a rural route mailman and with the Corps of Commissionaires. There will be no visitation by request. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, Milltown Blvd., St. Stephen, NB on Tuesday February 27, 2007 at 10:30 AM. February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued Brown – Sandra J. 1948 – 2007. Mrs. Sandra Jane Brown, beloved wife of Mr. David Brown of Burdett, peacefully passed away at the Bow Island Health Centre on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the age of 58 years. Sandra was born on March 5, 1948 in Windsor, Nova Scotia. On July 3, 1965 she married David Brown. In 1966 they moved to Alberta and settled in Burdett in the early 1970’s. Burdett quickly became home for them. Her door was always open and she welcomed everyone. She loved kids and entertained them in her home. They loved her too because she was an excellent cook and baker! Over the years she was involved with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion and served on the executive in many capacities. In the earlier years she could be found at the local skating rink as she was active in figure skating. Sandra was happy -go –lucky with a wonderful sense of humor. She represented herself well and always treated people she would of like to have been treated. She will be dearly missed. Besides her husband David, she will be cheerished in the hearts of her family including her daughter,Claudette Greggains; grandchildren, Maverick Brown, Colton Adams and Nathaniel and Joshua Greggains; her parents, Roby and Mary Flynn; a brother, Steven (Heather) Flynn and a sister, Brenda Graves; several foster children over the years and a special friend, Linda Nelson as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She is also survived by all David’s family members. The funeral was held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 139 – 2nd Avenue West, Bow Island, Alberta, on Wednesday February 28, 2007 at 2 P.M with Reverend Sandra McMillan officiating. Interment followed at the Burdett Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Sandra’s name may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 102 Crestwood Square One, 1865 Dunmore Rd. S.E. Medicine Hat, Alberta. T1A 1Z8 A memorial service will be held on March 10th at 2 P.M. in the St. Croix United Church, 5477 Hwy. 1, Rev. Karen Pearce officiating. A reception will follow in the C.E. Centre of the church.
February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued MORTON, Paul Herbert - 86, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away on Friday, February 23, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 4, 1920, in Mapleton, Hants Co., he was the son of the late Ebenezer and Sarah (Rogers) Morton. He was employed as a clerk for the County of Hants for many years as well as a Provincial Constable until his retirement. In his youth he worked as a telegraph operator, he was employed with the National Railway, and for several years he worked for the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission. Paul was a veteran of the Second World War, having served through Camp Aldershot, Kings Co. Paul was an avid reader, liked a great western and in his younger years enjoyed harness racing. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by daughters, Patricia (David) Porter, Mount Denson; Paulette (Rod) Wallace, Hants Border; sons, Earl (Bonna), Lockhartville; Stephen (Marjorie), Windsor; Bryan (Shelley), Newport Corner; Paul (Sherri), Hantsport; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie (O'Toole); son, Walter (David); brothers, Roland and Eric; sisters, Sarah McKenzie and Evelyn Sabean. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday, February 25, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Interment to follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued SAULNIER, Roy Frank - 63, Surette’s Island, Yarmouth Co. It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Roy Saulnier announces his passing on Friday, February 23, 2007, at home, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Summerside, P.E.I. on January 14, 1944, he was a son of Marie (LeBlanc) Saulnier, Nakile Home for Special Care, Argyle, and the late Mack Saulnier. Besides his father, he was predeceased by an infant brother , Paul. Surviving are his wife of almost 33 years, Miriam; his daughters, Leah (Tom) Muise, Yarmouth, and Ashley, at home; sister Phyllis (Ted) Cottreau, Wedgeport; brothers Victor (Simone) Saulnier, Austin (Diane) Saulnier, both of Abram’s River; Brian (Carmen) Saulnier, David (Anne) Saulnier, both of Yarmouth. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and stepfather in-law, Edward Doucette. Roy was a very dedicated worker, a devoted husband, and a loving father. He was always involved in community activities and local sports, having played softball with the Surette’s Island “Islanders” for 26 years. He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Parish, where served as lecturer and lay minister, and where he served as President of the Parish Council, chair of the cemetery committee and member of the Pastoral Council, in which capacity he co-presided for services at Nakile Home for Special Care, as well as for prayer vigils at the funeral homes. He was also very involved in the Cursillo Movement. He was President of the Amirault’s Hill School PTA, a member of Ste. Anne’s Credit Union Finance Committee, a member of the Nova Scotia Sheet Metal Workers Board of Directors, and he volunteered with many other groups and organizations. Roy worked for W. B. Baileys Ltd., and then at Germain’s Mechanical & Electrical, Yarmouth, for the last 42 years. Visitation took place from 2-4, 7-9 Sunday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 26, from St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste. Anne–du-Ruisseau, Father Maurice LeBlanc officiated, along with members of Saint Joseph’s Parish Pastoral Council. Interment followed in Saint Joseph’s Parish Cemetery, Surette’s Island. February 18, 2007 to February 24, 2007 continued UPSHAW, Freda Irene - 83, Three Mile Plains, Hants Co., passed into her eternal life on Saturday, February 24, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 22, 1923, in Surrey, England, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Amelia (Wilson) Jamieson. She married her Canadian soldier, Vincent Upshaw, and came to Canada in 1946. Freda was a member of the War Brides Association and the Royal Canadian Legion Hants County Branch No. 009 Ladies Auxiliary. Freda was also a member of Windsor Plains Baptist Church and choir. She worked at Nova Scotian Textiles for 19 years. She was an avid bingo player, loved camping, scratch tickets and looked forward to family gatherings. Freda was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She is survived by daughters, Rose Upshaw, Kitchener, Ont.; Donna (Billy) Grey, Three Mile Plains; Jean (Dean) Frank, Garlands Crossing; Sharon (Allan) Shand, Hamilton; sons, Albert (Barbara), Three Mile Plains; Myles (Pam), Kitchener, Ont.; Vincent Jr. (Jackie), Three Mile Plains; daughter-in-law, Delphina Upshaw, Three Mile Plains; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; three sisters and three brothers in the United Kingdom; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Vincent Walton Upshaw; sons, Gilbert, and Elvis in infancy; stepfather, Jack Wilson; great-grandson, Josh Lake; six sisters and three brothers.
