Simon John Parent - 76, Halifax, N.S. passed away peacefully on Friday, February 16, 2007 at the Halifax V.G.. hospital after a lengthy illness. Born in Crisostome, Quebec, he was the youngest son of Joseph and Stephanie (Primeau)) Parent. Joining at an early age, he made the military his career. He served as a Peace keeper in the Middle East (Blue Beret). After retirement at Cold Lake Alberta in 1979, he moved to Berwick, N.S. He worked as a school bus driver for Perry Rand Ltd. in Cambridge from 1981 - 2000. He was an avid member of the Berwick Lions, becoming King Lion in 1990. He spent many happy hours playing cards and darts with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Nancy, sister Francoise (Raymond) Ormstown, Que.; two sons, Richard (Terri), Victoria, B.C.; Barry (Lynn), Ottawa; two daughters, Vicki (Scott), Calgary, Alberta.; Wendy, Red Deer, Alberta; five step children, Kevin (Barb), Rhea (Gail), Stephanie (Steve), Kelly (Eric), Lori (Richard); as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Julienne (Rene) and a brother Jules (Theresa). A memorial service was held at the Berwick Lions Hall, Berwick, N.S, Saturday, February 24th, 2007 at 3 p.m. Commitment at a later date will be at the Royal Military Cemetery, Ottawa, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative care unit of the V.G. hospital or Canadian Cancer Society.

Samms, Earl James – 87, Grantham Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born September 5, 1919 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late John J. and Mary Ida (Muise) Samms. Earl worked with Dominion Textiles/Cosmos Imperial Mills, Yarmouth, and he was a veteran of the second World War, having served in Labrador. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61, Yarmouth, and he was a talented musician, having entertained many people throughout the years. Surviving are his companion, Ida Rennehan; brothers, Burton Samms, Yarmouth; Ernest Samms, Hebron; grandchildren, Dianna, Kimberly, Trevor, Shaunda, Dwayne, John, Joanne and James; 14 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Florence Cecilia (Allen) Samms; daughters, Jenette Buchanan, Karen Comeau; brothers, Mel and Arthur; sisters, Ethel, Jane and Roxanne. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 Sunday, in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral was held at 2 PM, Tuesday, February 20 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church, William Street, Yarmouth, Rev. Matthew Sponagle officiated. Spring interment in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. Charbonneau, Marie Thérèse – 78, Sluice Point, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Friday, February 16, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 10, 1928, in Sluice Point, she was a daughter of the late Germain and Frances (Surette) Pothier. She worked as a homemaker, and had also worked with Eaton’s. Thérèse will be fondly remembered for her hospitality, having opened her home to many, she will also be remembered for her wonderful fudge, peanut brittle and jams. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and a dear friend to many. Surviving are her daughter, Lyne (Carl) MacNeil, as well as a grandson, Daniel, all of Windsor, Ont.; sisters, Jeanette LeBlanc, Sluice Point; Verna (George) Taylor, Dartmouth; brother, Gilbert (Geraldine) Pothier, Pinkney’s Point; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, André Charbonneau; sisters, Augusta Burke, Celine Hines; brother, Hector Pothier. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 Sunday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral was held at 11 AM, Wednesday, February 21 from Holy Family Catholic Church, Amirault’s Hill, Father Maurice LeBlanc officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Ernest Robert "Ernie" - 81, Brooklyn, Hants Co., passed away Friday, February 16, 2007, in Windsor Elms Senior Citizens Home, Windsor. Born December 23, 1925 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Ruth (Underwood) Leary. Ernie was well-known in the village of Brooklyn where through the seasons he was seen collecting pussy willows in the spring, mowing grass and gardening in the summer, raking and collecting leaves in the fall and shoveling snow in the winter. He always enjoyed a good conversation about the weather. Ernie was a charter member of the Newport Jolly Seniors. Ernie is survived by sister, Marjorie Baron, Brooklyn; sister-in-law, Frances Leary, Borden-Carlton, P.E.I.; niece, Mary (Douglas) MacDonald, Brooklyn; nephews, Michael Ozon, Donald (Juanita) Leary, Christopher (Tammy) Leary, and Jeff Leary, all of Prince Edward Island; great-nieces and nephews, Suzanne (Brian) Partridge, Carrie and Amy MacDonald, Darcy, Kyle and Lacey Ozon, Desiree, Clara and Emma Leary; great great-nieces, Elizabeth and Brianna Partridge. Ernie was predeceased by brother, Clarence Leary, and special friend, Mrs. Keith. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). Doris Evelyn Pinch - Avonport, passed away peacefully, in her 85th year, in Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, on Friday, February 16, 2007, after a valiant battle with cancer. Doris is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Eldon Glenn Pinch of Avonport. She was the cherished mother of nine children, including eldest son, John (Donna), Prince Edward Island; James (Leona), British Columbia; Wesley (Sandie), Alberta; Gloria (Bob), Washington, U.S.A.; Wade (Diane), Hantsport, and Pamela (Devon), of Halifax. Doris was predeceased by her sons, Steven, Gene and Glenn; granddaughter, Desiree. She was a gentle and loving presence in the lives of her 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Born in Bible Hill on April 23, 1921, Doris was the beloved daughter of James and Marie Robinson. She is survived by her sister, Daisy. Doris left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her. She will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to family and the memory of her sharp wit, jovial laughter, immense kindness and generosity of spirit will forever be treasured by her family and friends alike. Doris was an accomplished cook and hostess and her family is grateful for the many wonderful moments shared at her table. She was an avid reader, skilled storyteller and natural caregiver. She retired in her 70s after 25 years of service caring for the elderly in the employ of Wolfville Nursing Homes Limited. A woman of faith, Doris was a devoted and active member of Avonport United Baptist Church for many years. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. MacNaughton of Mud Creek Clinic as well as the wonderful staff at the Valley Regional Hospital for the excellent care she received at their hands. Doris will be forever remembered and much missed by her family and friends. The love she radiated will be carried with us and the strength, courage and humour she possessed will continue to be our inspiration. Visitation was Sunday, February 18, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in H.C. John Bud Haggerty - 71, of Saxon Street, Centreville, Kings County, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in East Halls Harbour, he was a son of the late William and Frances (Jess) Haggerty. In his earlier years, he had been employed on the Reg Foley Farm and later worked for Hostess (Scotties) Foods, Centreville. He retired from Weavexx, Kentville, after 32 years (1961-1993). He was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch 6, Kentville, and an avid dart player and bowler. Bud loved tinkering and was able to build both a lawn tractor and snowmobile from spare parts. He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Annabelle Coleman; a daughter, Glynis Carter, Cambridge; a son, Cecil, at home; four sisters, Ethel (Clyde) Harvey, Steam Mill; Ester (Ralph) Houghton, Centreville; Winnie (Brian) Rolston, Brantford, Ontario; Alice (Myles) Olmstead, East Halls Harbour; three brothers, Earl (Eleanor), Centreville; Bronson (Barbara), Waterville; Clifford (Donna), Provost, Alberta; two grandchildren, Thomas Darren John Carter and Andrea Marie Carter; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lloyd and Rae. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, and there was no visitation by family request. Bligh Arnold McNutt - 69, of Steam Mill, Kings County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Saturday, February 17, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Marjorie (Baird) McNutt. He had served with the Black Watch Regiment (Canadian Guards) from 1955-1958. He had been employed with Weavexx, Kentville, from 1965-1990, from where he retired. Family was very important to Bligh and he especially adored his grandchildren. He was also an avid gardener. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth McNeil; two daughters, Kimberley (Lee) MacEachern, Steam Mill; Kelley (Everaldo) Gregorio, Sao Paulo, Brazil; two sons, Steven, South Korea; Andrew (Karen), Kentville; two sisters, Harriett Kindness, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; Phyllis Earley, Guelph, Ontario; a brother, Murray, Guelph; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Aaron, Katheryn, Benjamin, Kyla and Michael; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Greta LeBlanc; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond “Jim”. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2007. Savary, Mary Joyce – 72, born Feb. 26, 1934, passed away peacefully Feb. 17, 2007 at the Digby General Hospital. She had lived most of her life in Conway, Digby County. She was predeceased by parents, Omar and Jessie McGuire, brother Frank, and husband Layton Atherton Savary. She is survived by daughters Karen (Doug), Linda Fowler (Sean), Sheila (Brian); sons Stephen (Pamela), Kevin (Michelle), Brian (Wanda) Keith (Krista) and grandchildren Hollie, Stephen, Sarah, Robyn and Hannah. Joyce had a great love for animals, especially dogs and cats. She has been cremated. No service at this time. Interment will be at a later date. Donations can be made to the Digby Feral Society.

Earl Leroy Schofield - 72, of Greenfield, Kings County, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Windsor Forks, he was a son of the late Aubrey and Evelyn (Tracy) Schofield. He had been employed at the main post office on Bedford Road in Halifax and later was employed in the C.N.I.B. canteen in the old V.G. Hospital for 15 years. Along with his wife, Myra, he owned and operated Earl’s General Store in Greenfield for over 30 years. Over the years, Earl took a keen interest in the Kentville Rotary Radio Auction and was a strong supporter. He was also a registered member of the C.N.I.B. He is survived by his wife, the former O. Myra Schofield; two sons, Robert Douglas and William Earl, both at home; three sisters, Madeline Fisher, New Minas; Helen, Windsor; Vivian (David) Shaw, Windsor Forks; four brothers, Carl (Joan) and Ervin (Connie), both of Windsor Forks; Burt and Milton (Betty), both of Falmouth; his mother-in-law, Nettie Schofield, Upper Vaughan; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Myrna; two brothers, Douglas and Harley. Visitation was held from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. Monday, February 19, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2007. Frederick Charles (“Ted”) Emenau — 85, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 17, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Springfield, Annapolis County, on Jan. 8, 1922, he was a son of the late Archibald and Annie (Schnare) Emenau. Ted was a pharmacist, owning and operating Emenau’s Pharmacy from 1951-1978. He was an active member of Zion United Church, a member of the Liverpool K-40 Club, Kiwanis Club of Liverpool, a former member of both the Liverpool Curling Club and Liverpool Golf Club, and a Past Master of Zetland Masonic Lodge #9 A.F & A.M. Ted was a former town councilor for the town of Liverpool in 1983. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, the former Hilda Gardner; sons: Neil (Elizabeth) of Bridgewater, Reid (Patricia) of Liverpool, Jeffrey of Liverpool, Kevin (Deborah) of Halifax; four granddaughters whom he adored: Heather Ellis of Yarmouth, Kelly Sarty of Bridgewater, Lindsay Emenau of Charlottetown, PEI, Courtney Emenau of Halifax; one adorable great-grandson, Owen Sarty; brother, Harold (Elizabeth) of Brooklyn. He was predeceased by sister, Mildred; brothers: Walter, Arthur, Robert. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 20 from Zion United Church, Liverpool; Rev. Joanne McFadden officiated. Burial in the Zion United Church Cemetery, Payzant Street, Liverpool.
