POTHIER, Josephine Catherine “Joey” – 89, Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2007 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born October 27, 1917 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Roger Marc Pothier and Anina Marte Surette. Joey was a dedicated wife and mother, and she enjoyed knitting and listening to Radio CIFA. She is survived by a daughter, Pauline (Edgar) Muise, Boston, Mass.; sons, Thomas (Leona) Pothier, Robert Pothier, both of Wedgeport. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leodore Francois Pothier; brothers, Howard, Bobby, Percy, Gordon; sisters, Pearl, Hazel, Evelyn and Marie. Visitation took place from 2-4, 7-9 Sunday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral mass was held at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 19 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Boyd, Lura Mae – 99, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully February 15, 2007 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on March 14, 1907 in Clark’s Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Captain Henry and Annie (Nickerson) Murphy. Lura was a member of Beacon United Church. She was employed with the Yarmouth Royal Store for many years, and later at the Yarmouth Wool Shoppe. She had a real love for clothing. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by daughter Lois Ann (Gerald) Nickerson, Brooklyn, Yar. Co.; sons William “Bill” (Carol), Victoria, B.C.; George (Gwen), Aylsford, N.S.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Jost; brothers, George and Jamie; sister, Minnie Adams and a great grandson. Visitation was held Saturday, Feb. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Funeral service took place Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. A.D. Bill Newell officiated. Burial will take place at Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery in the spring. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Celia Gertrude Sweet - 102, Waterville, Kings Co. passed away peacefully Sunday, February 11, 2007, in the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre, Waterville, surrounded by the people who loved her at the MacArthur Unit. Born in New Ross, Lunenburg Co. on September 10, 1904, Celia was a daughter of the late Alfred James and Alma Eliza (MacDow) Reese. She was a member of Christ Anglican Church, New Ross. Celia lived most of her life in the Annapolis Valley area, where she worked since she was a child of nine and she had many wonderful detailed stories to tell. Her hands were always busy cooking, knitting and sewing and caring for the children she loved so much. Grammy, as she was known, brought joy and laughter to the MacArthur Unit, where she was treated like family. She deeply loved her grandchildren, Linda (Gary) Thomas, Calgary, Alberta; Celeste (Wayne) Sanford, Kentville; Peggy (Paul) Blackmore, New Minas; great-grandchildren, Chantal, Shannon, Niki, Chad, Wendi, Amy, Tanya, Stacey and Beth; several great-great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Celia was predeceased by her daughter, Lillian Reeves; son-in-law, Eddy Reeves; grandson, Bruce Reeves; great grandson Bruce Edson; as well as her five brothers & six sisters. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, from the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial Street, Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). Rev. John S. Beers officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Berwick Cemetery. Amirault, Alma Marie – 87, Villa Acadienne, Meteghan, formerly of Saulnierville, died, Feb. 14 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral was held in Scared Heart Church, Saulnierville. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Landry, Bernard Joseph “BJ” – 27 of Freeport, Digby Co., formerly of Pictou, died Feb. 15 at home. Funeral was held in Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou. Burial will be in parish cemetery.

Blair F. MacDonald — 64, of Liverpool, died suddenly at home Thursday, February 15, 2007. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Angus and Marie (Johnson) MacDonald. Blair was a former employee of BIO, Canadian Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries. He is survived by sons: John (Hazel) of Barrie, Ont., Dale (Rhonda) of Beach Meadows; grandchildren: Katherine and Ashley; sister, Jean Smith of Sheet Harbour; brothers, Clarence (Glenise) of Miramichi, NB, Terrence of Kentville. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A private graveside memorial will be held at a later date. Curry (Voiculescu) (nee: Wile), Vivian Reita - 86, Halifax, formerly of Windsor, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2007, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Vivian was born on July 30, 1920 in Vaughans to the late Aubrey and Nellie (Leopold) Wile. She enjoyed a childhood surrounded by siblings and cousins. An excellent student in school, her interest in accounting and personal drive resulted in her moving to Ottawa to work for civil service. In 1945, she married her now late husband Charles Curry in Windsor. They had one child, Sharron. Upon moving to Halifax, Vivian became involved in property management. During these years, her love for classical music was displayed in the volunteer hours she gave to such organizations as the Halifax Music Festival, Women's Musical Club and the Maritime Conservatory of Music. Church involvement was very important to her and she was a staunch member of St. Matthews United Church. She is mourned by daughter, Sharron (John B.) Wiens, Morden, Man.; grandchildren, John C. (Katherine), Quebec City; Daniel and Kate, Morden, Man., and Paul (Dawn) Wiens, Winnipeg, Man. Vivian is also survived by siblings, Alvah (Mayme) Wile, Roberta Graham, Ruth Redden, Joseph (Ruth) Wile, Theodore (Ann) Wile, June (Jim) Shea, and sisters-in-law, Ruby and Eva Wile. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Hamilton; brothers, Aubrey and Howard Wile, and brothers-in-law, Bud Hamilton, Harold Graham and Clarie Redden. Vivian had been in declining health following heart surgery in 1985. She spent her last months living comfortably at Victoria Hall in Halifax. Her family would like to thank all the people who were her friends over the years and tried to help her in any way. Special thanks to the medical staff for the compassion shown toward her during her many stays in hospital. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors 7-9 p.m. Monday, February 19. Reid -Amy Neva - 78, Falmouth, passed away February 15, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, with her family by her side. Born in Huntingdon, Que., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Mabel (Clark) Donnelly. She was a past employee of Bell Telephone in Montreal, and of Canada Post, serving as Assistant Postmaster in Hemmingford, Que., and in Falmouth and Windsor. She was a member of the Quebec Women's Institute in Hemmingford from 1956 until moving to Nova Scotia in 1980, and received her WI Life Membership in 1977. She was an avid reader (averaging a book a week over the past 35 years). Amy enjoyed working with her hands, at one time taking a great interest in weaving and sewing, and most recently was an active member of the Merry Marthas quilting group at Windsor Baptist Church. A wonderful cook she enjoyed nothing more than hosting large family gatherings with all the trimmings. She also kept busy by volunteering her time as a teacher‚s assistant at Falmouth Elementary, tutoring children‚s reading skills, and also volunteered with the Public Health Service‚s School Immunization Programme. Amy is survived by her husband, Peter Reid; children, Linda Lawton, Bridgetown; William Winter, Hemmingford, Que.; John Reid, Dartmouth; Karla Lynch, Rawdon, and their spouses; grandchildren, Jason, Sarah, Amy, Adrienne, Matthew, Andrew, Brittany; great-grandchildren, Mathew, Brianna, Victoria; and brother, John, Innisfail, Alta. She was predeceased by her son, James Winter; sister, Mae Forget, and brother, Leslie Donnelly. At Amy‚s request, her body has been donated to medical science. Harold Alexander "Alex" Thorpe - passed away on February 15, 2007 at his seaside home in Martin’s River, after a period of declining health. He was born on March 27, 1920 in Edmonton, Alberta, first child of Joseph and Katheryn Thorpe. He attended school in Canning, Nova Scotia and graduated from KCA in Kentville, Nova Scotia in 1937. He received his apprenticeship papers at the Halifax Dockyards after serving four years. During this same time frame he attended the Nova Scotia Technical College two and one-half days a week for four years. In the spring of 1943 he volunteered to join the Canadian Navy serving on the HMCS Iroquois from March 1943 until the summer of 1945. While in the Navy he served with the rank of Chief Petty Officer ERA. Alex saw extensive service in the North Atlantic and the Murmansk Run. He was later presented with the 30th Anniversary Murmansk Medal from the Russian Ambassador to Canada. While serving overseas he met his future wife, Mary Lyon "May" Gordon of Scotland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Duff Gordon of Troon, Scotland. They were married on August 19, 1943 in Scotland. After the war years he held various positions in Halifax and Vancouver, B.C., prior to joining Shell Canada Limited’s merchant oil tanker fleet. Shell Canadian Tanker ships were sailing regularly from Portland, Maine to many South American oil ports. Alex completed his Marine Chief Engineer’s certification in 1951. He served as Chief Engineer on the largest oil tanker constructed in Canada to date, from 1962-1976. He retired in the spring of 1976 from Shell. During this time frame in life he lived in Portland, Maine; Wolfville, N.S. and finally settling down in his favourite haven in Martin’s River, Lunenburg County. In his retirement years, Alex pursued many of his interests; woodlot manager, lapidary work, beekeeper, organic gardener, fishing and community work. In 2002, Alex was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee medal. He was past president of his Legion, Chester Basin Branch; President of the Over Forty Club, Secretary/Treasurer of the Naval Tribal Assoc., member of the Falls Committee, life member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriner’s to mention some of his distinctions. He left many footprints and touched so many friends and comrades with his light humour and stories. Alex is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, May Thorpe of Martin’s River; his three children, Donald (Suzanne), Dallas, Texas; Gordon (Dianne), Wolfville, N.S.; Irene (Brian) Hirtle, Wileville, N.S.; grandchildren, Donald, Maryland; Meghan, North Carolina; Heather, Calgary; Kimberly, Riverview; Trevor, Wolfville; Erin, Utah; Simon, Halifax; Devon, Montreal; Shannon, Wileville and four great-grandchildren, Donald, Blaise, Ashlyn and Abigail in Maryland. His cherished sisters, Helen Little, Scotts Bay, N.S. and June Gast, Toronto, Ont., also survive him. Several nieces and nephews always were in his thoughts. Visitation was held 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, February 20 in Mahone Funeral Home, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay. A memorial service was held 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 21 in Western Shore Baptist Church, Western Shore. Pastor Donald Dunn officiated. Dorothy Anna “ Dot ” Lee - 73, Auburn, Kings Co. passed away Friday, February 16, 2007, in the Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Auburn, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Nina (Saunders) Lee. Dot loved all animals, especially cats, dogs and goats. Surviving are her sister, Beatrice (Ernie) Gorringe, North Kingston, Kings Co.; aunt, Carrie Clem, Middleton, Annapolis Co.; sister-in-law, Marion Lee, Morden, Kings Co.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Harold and Donald Lee; sister-in-law, Phyllis Lee. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In keeping with Dot’s wishes there will be a graveside committal service in the Aylesford Union Cemetery, that will be announced and held at a later date, with Pastor Kay Dean D.M. officiating. No flowers by request. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (specifically for Melanoma Cancer Research) or any charity.
