It was a seesaw battle to the end, but the Digby Lady Mariners managed to etch out a 74-66 win over the favoured Shelburne Regional High School Rebels Feb. 17 to win the Western Regional championship banner.
The Rebels would still be heading to the provincials March 1-3, even if the school wasn’t hosting the event this year.
The top two teams from the large Western Division are automatically in the championship.
The Rebels defeated Kings-Edgehill 49-38 during the first game of the tournament.
Laura Mailman scored 10, Eleanor Melanson put in six, Courteney Doane, 11, Kara Nash, two, and Christine Hennebury, 20.
Digby defeated the Bridgewater Lady Vikings 60-51 to set up the championship match. Bridgewater went on to defeat Kings-Edgehill 65-39 for the consolation prize.
Digby’s defense seemed impenetrable at times but the sound of the long swish from Shelburne’s sharpshooters made up the difference during the championship game.
Coach Phil Callan said, “The girls played an outstanding game with Megan Crosby, a first year player, stepping up with a fantastic game shooting.”
However, he continued, with only 1:41 left in the game, three of the Rebels’ starting players fouled out: Christine Henneberry, Kara Nash and Eleanor Melanson. The three accounted for 28 points.
The scored was tied 64-64 at that point before Digby went on a short scoring rampage to win the game.
Callan said, “It was game that had the lead change hands a number of times and at times both teams were up as much as 10 points on each other. Both teams played extremely well and it was very intense and entertaining basketball.”
Scoring for Shelburne were Laura Mailman with 10, Eleanor Melanson with two and Courteney Doane with 10, while Megan Crosby, Kara Nash and Christine Henneberry bucketed 18, 14 and 12 respectively.
Callan added, “I wish to thank all the fans that attended and supported the teams and look forward to seeing them all again at the provincial tournament.”
