 January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued DURKEE, Lyman Jesse - 82, Wellington, Yarmouth Co., passed away on January 25, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on May 12, 1924, in Saugus, Mass., U.S.A., he was a son of the late Samuel and Edna (Jewett) Durkee. He was an adherent of Hebron United Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in Holland and the United Kingdom. He received his training in Woodstock, Ont. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 61, Yarmouth. He worked as a janitor at the Hebron School and was also a farmer. He will be greatly missed by all the former students at the Hebron School. He is survived by daughter, Laurie (Alan) Brown, New Zealand; sons, Robert Lyman and Howard (Edna), both of Manitoba; Larry (Cathy), Calgary; Allen, Halifax; brother, Ken (Mary) Durkee, Hebron; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Edna; children, Jane Louise, Paul, Paula, and Paulette in infancy; sisters, Ruth and Lois, and brother, Ray. Visitation was held Sunday, January 28, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Royal Canadian Legion service at 7:30 p.m., in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service took place Monday, January 29 at 2 p.m. in the Hebron United Baptist Church, Rev. Wayne Johnson officiated. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery in the spring.  January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued BUCHANAN, Gerald Lester - 91, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2007, in Villa Acadienne, Meteghan, formerly of Shelburne. Born March 6, 1915, in Shelburne, he was a son of the late Samual and Ella Mae (Thompson) Buchanan. Surviving are children, Jerry, Bernie, both of Ontario; Diane and Victor, both of British Columbia; Philip, Brazil Lake; Larry, Deerfield; Ethel, Port Maitland; siblings, William “Bill”, Lil, Pauline, Lorna and Betty, all of Shelburne, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Interment will be in Shelburne at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.  January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued Henri Wilfrid Ladouceur - 78, of Scott’s Bay, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Hull, Quebec, he was a son of the late Toussaint and Juilette (Banville) Ladouceur. As a young boy he and his family moved to Ottawa, where he spent his youth. He later joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was stationed at CFB Stadacona. Following five years with the navy, he married and in 1952 returned to Ottawa, where he had been employed with E.B. Eddy Forest Products in both Ottawa and Hull. He retired following 37 years of service to the company and in 1989 returned to Nova Scotia and settled in Scott’s Bay. He enjoyed gardening, maintaining his property, spending time with his dogs and walking on the beach. He is survived by his wife, the former Ramona Steele; three sons, Joseph (Ann) and Peter, both of Ottawa; Michael (Ann), Orleans, Ontario; a sister, Carmen (Rene) Guay, Gatineau, Quebec; a step-granddaughter, Vanessa Hagel, Ottawa; two step-great grandchildren, Desiree and Derick. There was no visitation, by family request. A funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Reverend June Keddy officiated. Burial took place in the Scott’s Bay Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Fidelis House Society or to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
 January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued ROMAIN, Eliser Joseph - 89, Yarmouth, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born September 3, 1917 in St. Bernard, he was a son of the late Edward and Mary (LeBlanc) Romain. He was a retired mason, and he and his wife enjoyed many happy summers together at their camp in Morris Island. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mildred H. (Boudreau) Romain; grandchildren, Steven Romain, Karen Romain and Heather Romain, along with three grandchildren, Amber, Connor and Austin Romain, along with a daughter-in-law, Carol Romain, Halifax. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Bruce Romain, a brother, Gerald Romain; sisters, Leona Fuller, Irene McDonald, Lucille LeBlanc, Estelle Romain. Visitation took place from 7-9 Sunday, January 28 with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass took place at 11:00AM, Monday, January 29, from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment will take place in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.  January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued Burke, Abel Arthur - Died suddenly at home on Friday, January 26, 2007, in his 81st year. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline for 53 years; loving father of Brian and his wife Gail of Hamilton and Susan and her husband Vince Lepore of Mount Hope; cherished grampa of Ryan, Andrea, Rebecca and Nicholas; dear twin brother of Isabelle Pothier of Tusket, N.S. and brother of Archbishop Austin Burke of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by brothers Joseph, Dennis, Bruno, Avite, Paul and sisters Rosa & Pauline. He was a lifetime friend of Herman and Anne Bourque of Hamilton. Abel was an employee of Frost Works, Stelco for 32 years. Family and friends were received at Crestmont Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue East on Sunday, January 28 from 7-9 p.m. and Monday, January 29 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Prayers were at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Funeral mass was celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church (50 Brucedale Ave., E.) on Tuesday, January 30 at 10 a.m. Cremation followed.  January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued Gladys May Robichaud - 90, of Grand View Manor, Berwick, formerly of Kentville, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2007 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Gaspé, Quebec, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Flora (Minchinton) Roberts. She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She is survived by a daughter, Delilah Keddy, Greenwood; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Robichaud, North Alton; a brother, Kenneth (Chris), PEI; a son-in-law, Troy Keddy, Aylesford; six grandchildren, Jared, Colton, Brandon and Lunden Keddy, Paul (Kirsten) and Jay (Cindy) Robichaud; two great grandchildren, Ian and Chelsey Robichaud; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul; a son, Paul; four sisters, Faye LeMesurier, Bertha Roberts, Susanna Roberts and Vina Bourgaise; four brothers, Arthur, Milton, Burton and Lindsay; her companion, Wilbert Bourgaize. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Reverend Elizabeth Johnson officiated. Born on May 24, 1934, in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late John and Arthesa “Polly” (Crosby) Spears. She was a member of the Argyle Pubnico United Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Chipman-Spears Insurance and then worked at the GAP Credit Union. She loved knitting and quilting, and enjoyed music and singing. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur “Sonny” Morton, Argyle; daughter, Peggy (Kevin) D'Entremont, Argyle; sons, David W. (Juliette), Grant (Lena), both of Argyle; brothers, Arthur “Art” (Shirley) Spears, Yarmouth; Ivan “Ike” (Betty) Spears, Shelburne; sisters, Thelma (Paul) Dobson, Yarmouth; Margaret (Howard) Goodwin, Yarmouth; grandchildren, Ben, James, Paul, Jodie, Kellie, Dave, Laura, and great-grandchild, Abby-Gail.  January 21, 2007 to January 27, 2007 continued RUBIN, Donald John - 79, of Roseway Manor, Shelburne Co. N.S, formerly of Port Clyde, passed away in Roseway Manor on January 27, 2007. Born in New Hamburg, Ontario, and raised on a farm, he was a son of the late Florence (Loehr) Rubin Fagge and John “Jack” Fagge. Don joined the Royal Canadian Navy when he was 17 and retired a Warrant Officer after 28 years of service. This included numerous tours of duties overseas, serving on the Magnificent and Bonaventure and a Shearwater posting from 1955 to 1973. He loved to travel and following his military career, he loved interacting with people as a bartender. It was as easy for Don to remember the details of a meal enjoyed in a far away place, as it was for him to tell you the part number he replaced on a Sea King helicopter. He served as a Free Mason Master of the Virgin Lodge and celebrated his 50-year jewel in 2006. The last 25 years of his life were rich in travel memories spent with his surviving spouse, Deny Eshelby. He is also survived by his daughter, Catherine (Jerry) Silver, Cow Bay; son, John, Oakville, Ont; step-children, Robert and Dayle; grandchildren, Robert, Suzy, Michael, Michelle, Lee, Layla and Emiliano as well as numerous great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife of 34 years, Grace Leggate; daughter, Grace Florence, sister, Dorothy Schnarr and a brother, Daniel, in infancy. Don, your stories, laughter, companionship and the way you chronicled our lives will be missed forever. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. A Masonic memorial service was held on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Matthew Sponagle officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation. Don’s ashes will be committed to the sea with a Naval Service at a later date. Our thanks to the Roseway Manor staff for providing Don with the best quality of life; he constantly praised their professionalism but more than that, their professional touch and attention. Born on July 21, 2006 in Mississauga, he was a son of Todd Millett, Gaspereau and Candice Garcia, Mississauga. He is survived by his twin sister, Memphis Jordan; a sister, Megan; a brother Cayden; maternal grandparents Humbert and Marie Garcia, Mississauga; paternal grandmother, Charlotte Millett (Lorne), Gaspereau; paternal grandfather, Todd Millett Sr. (Susan), Gaspereau. A funeral service was held on February 1, 2007 in Mississauga. Inquiries may be directed to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
