January 28 to February 3, 2007 Suzanne Mary Copperthwaite Sweeny– 84, passed away peacefully Jan. 20 in her home, North Range, with daughter Shelagh, son-in-law Abe and Tabbycat by her side. Sue will be fondly remembered as a loving, self sacrificing mother and grandmother who would do anything for her family and friends. Her kind words and honesty shaped the lives of everyone she knew. Sue was an artist and has left behind her view of the world for us all to treasure. She moved in May 2006 from Ottawa to become a Nova Scotian. She is survived by her twin brother Gerry, her three children Shelagh, Margot, Alastair and by her grandchildren Andrew, Malcolm, Ewan, Caroline, Trisha and Sophie and great-granddaughter Masha. The family sends sincere thanks to Dr. Paula Carmicheal, Dr. Virik and all the caring VON nurses that helped so much at home. The family plans a memorial service this summer at the lake she so loved and an art exhibition in her honour.
January 28 to February 3, 2007 Clayton Theodore "Ted" Franklyn - 77, of Hantsport, N.S. passed away Monday, January 22, 2007 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Young's Cove, Annapolis Co., he was the son of the late Gerald and Luella (Guest) Clayton. Ted worked on the Gypsum boats out of Hantsport for several years and over 40 years for Minas Basin Pulp & Power. Jack of all trades, he loved camping and always had his toolbox handy for when fellow campers needed something fixed. He enjoyed reminiscing about the practical jokes he used to play while working on the gypsum boats and at Minas Basin, but his favourite topic was his camping experiences. An avid supporter of the Hantsport Shamrocks Ball Team and was looking forward to his great grandson playing minor ball. Ted was also a dialysis patient for the past four years. Surviving are his loving wife and friend of 56 years Eleanor ( Williams ), daughter Pat (Craig) Cuvilier, grandsons Chris (Tracy), Joey (Kari) and great grandson Layton; sisters Isabel (Bill) Robertson, Lillian Clayton, Mary Johnson and brother Gary (Diane) and several nieces and nephews. Thanks to the excellent care of the V.O.N. 7.2 Stepdown Unit of the Halifax Inf. and the Home Dialisis Unit at the Dixon Center. Donations in memory may be made to V.O.N. Annapolis Valley Branch (Hants West) and the Home Dialysis Unit care of the QE11 Health Science Center. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. January 28 to February 3, 2007 Pamela Joanne Robar - 50, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, Nova Scotia. Born in Antigonish on September 28, 1956, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Maxine (Hallett) Mason. Pamela is survived by her husband David, daughter Crystal (Trevor) Miner, son Craig; grandchildren Justin, Kane and Shelby; daughter-in-law Roxanne Adams, sister Stephney (Gord) Hind, brothers Kevin (Lorraine) Mason, Lawrence (Jill) Mason; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Pamela was predeceased by an infant son, and an infant brother. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. There will be a private family service at a later date. January 28 to February 3, 2007 MacDUFF, James Anderson "Jim" - 1916-2007, Windsor. Jim MacDuff passed away peacefully in his 91st year on January 23, 2007. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, A. Eileen (Daye); daughters, Jamesie Mayo, Lunenburg; Mary Jayne (Chris) Tilley, Halifax; sons, Dr. Reid (Roslyn), Windsor; Jack (Janet), Moncton, N.B. He was a beloved and respected grandfather of Todd (Krista), Tracy Lee, and Coco Mayo, Lunenburg; Glen (Mong-Diep) MacDuff, Halifax; Blair (Tamara) MacDuff, Antigonish; James, Halifax; Kathryn, Montreal, Que., and Alison MacDuff, Calgary, Alta.; Brinley, Toronto, Ont.; Matthew and Keelin Tilley, Halifax. Jim was a proud great-grandfather of 10 children. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Gloria Ferguson, Winnipeg, Man., and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, J. Leslie and Annie MacDuff; his sister, Margaret Thomas, and brothers, Leslie and Edward, and son-in-law, Bob Mayo. Jim was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Born in Halifax, Jim was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion. He attended school in Halifax followed by studies at Kings Collegiate School (KCS) Windsor, from 1928-35. While attending KCS Jim was Captain of the Cadet Corps and was presented with the Lord Roberts prize for the best rifle shot in the province of Nova Scotia for two years. While shooting in Ottawa he won the top Canadian prize for the Cornel White Shield Match. Jim attended Dalhousie University, later working with the Canadian General Electrical Co. in Halifax. He was a member of the Princess Louise Fusiliers for over six years, completing training in Bedford, Aldershot, and Ottawa, followed by service in the 4th Armored Brigade of the Royal Canadian Core of Signals. Following his training in England, Jim completed service in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. After overseas service, Jim joined the Federal Department of Fisheries & Oceans where he was the Chief Protection Officer for the county of Lunenburg. Jim was a proud citizen of the town of Lunenburg for 43 years and his involvement in the community was extensive. He was past Sec/Treasurer of the Board of Trade; President of the Red Cross; Cub & Scout Leader; President of the Lunenburg Curling Club; Rear Commodore of the Lunenburg Yacht Club; Founding member and Sec/Treasurer of the Lunenburg Rod & Gun Club; a long-time Legion member and a member of Central United Church of Lunenburg, and later Windsor United Church, Windsor. Jim was a Mason and member of the Clarke Lodge No. 61 of Chester. For the past 14 years he had resided in Windsor where he enjoyed taking part in many activities at his old alma mater, KES. A lover of home and family, Jim's great delight was in the circle of his own home and cottage where his hospitality extended to all within its precincts range with true regard and sincerity. An ardent salmon and trout fisherman, Jim enjoyed fly-tying and proved a fine companion for out-of-door activity with family and friends. His oft read poem follows: I pray that I might fish Until my dying day And when it comes to my last cast I then most humbly pray When in the Lord's safe landing net And peacefully asleep That in his mercy I be judged As good enough to keep Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). January 28 to February 3, 2007 LEVY (MacLean), Stella May - 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Haliburton Place, Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Laura (Millen) MacLean. At an early age she went to live with her uncle and aunt, the late Alex and Isabel Sweet, where she remained until her marriage. She is survived by her daughter, Helen, New Minas; and son, Charles (Margaret), Three Mile Plains; grandchildren, Sharon (David Watson), Halls Harbour; Alan (Heather), Falmouth; Alex (Lisa), Concord, N.H.; Sarah (Mike Barker), Halifax; great-grandchildren, Jenna and Christopher Watson, Rhiannon Levy; sister, Mary Eldridge, Falmouth; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, who she was married to for 61 years; sisters, Jean MacLean, Dorothy Fish, Joan Laurence and brother, Wilford MacLean. She was a stay at home mom who provided loving care for her family. Her door was always open to family and friends. She enjoyed providing child care for John, Greg and Jeff Nichols. She was a member of Leila Rebeckah Lodge No. 59. She was involved in many activities at Windsor United Baptist Church and Sherwood Church. Special thanks to Dr. Enright, staff at Haliburton Place for their special care, and Ralph Leck and Duncan Young for their special friendship. January 28 to February 3, 2007 Olive May Lyman - 66, Berwick, Kings Co. formerly of Cambridge Station, Kings Co. passed away Saturday, January 20, 2007, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Cambridge Station, she was the youngest daughter of the late Richard and Avis (Reese) Lyman. Olive had attended school in Halifax, had worked as an accountant and was a member of the Cambridge United Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her son, Richard (Cathy) Lyman, Fredericton, N.B.; granddaughters, Stephanie and Melissa Lyman; several nieces & nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Harry, Carl and John Lyman; sisters, Evelyn Bird & Bessie Johnstone. Visitation for Olive was held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 23 in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, (902-538-9900), from where the funeral service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 24. Rev. Dr. Judith Saunders officiated. January 28 to February 3, 2007 William Francis “Bill” Cleary - 69, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2007 at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William and Hazel (Smith) Cleary. He received his education at Oxford School and later graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Halifax. Following graduation, he had been employed with British American Oil and for 29 years with Irving Oil. Following his retirement from Irving Oil, he worked for Milne’s Garage as a sales representative for Bridgestone/Firestone. He was an avid curler and was past president of both the Oilman’s Curling Association, Halifax and the Glooscap Curling Club, Kentville. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Frances LeBlanc; a son, William “Bill” (Genny), Ottawa; a sister, Elizabeth Hobin, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 29, 2007 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. Father Craig Christenson officiated. A private interment for immediate family only tookplace in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. A reception followed in the parish hall. Family flowers only, by request. January 28 to February 3, 2007 DEMMINGS, Eric Reid “Rick”, age 57, of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away Monday, January 29th, 2007, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his family during his courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 20th, 1949, in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Reginald and Rosalie (Bayliss) Demmings of Ellershouse. Rick was a proud employee for 14 years with O’Regan’s Chev Olds, where he achieved General Motors highest distinction, as a 12 year member of the sales marketing guild. He had formerly worked with K-Line Construction for 6 years, Kerr Electric and with Nova Scotia Power for 17 years. Rick always treasured time spent with family and friends, while hunting and fishing at the camp in Tatamagouche, as well as boating, golfing, four wheeling, gardening and traveling south. He also enjoyed board games and playing cards, which fulfilled his kind competitive nature. He was formerly active with community sports programs, whether coaching or playing. In Rick’s loving way he touched the lives of many people with his kind heart and positive assuring words. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, the former Gail Elizabeth O’Leary; sons, Richard (Jennifer), and their daughter Mackenzie, Fall River; Andrew (Teresa), and their expecting child, Mount Uniacke; Jamie (Erica), and their expecting child, Centre Burlington; sister, Pat (Alvin) Atwell, Ellershouse; brother, Gary (Maxine), Ellershouse; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by twin brothers, Michael and Richard Demmings; mother-in-law, Dorothy Muriel (Shunamon) O’Leary; father-in-law, Foster Edward O’Leary. The family express sincere thanks to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit 200, for the loving care and support. Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of the late Hastings and Jessie (Cunningham) Whynot. Mary Jane was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved wildlife, especially birds, and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughter Sherri (Brian Grant) of Brooklyn; son, David of Milton; grandchildren: Riley, Olivia and Aidan; sisters: Rose (Charles) Ingram of Liverpool, Cathy (Philip) MacLeod of Milton, Susan Oickle of Liverpool; brothers, Ted (Carol) of Liverpool, Terry (Margaret Deveau) of Milton. January 28 to February 3, 2007 BOWER, Kathryn Lenora - Now at peace, Kathryn passed away Friday, February 2, 2007 in Roseway Manor, Sandy Point with Larry and Dianne at her bedside. Born in Sandy Point, Shelburne Co. on December 3, 1918, she was a daughter of the late George Wellington “Diddy” and Janie (Goodick) Holmes. A hard-working, meticulous person, Kathryn’s pride was her family and her home. She and her late husband, Clyde, enjoyed camping for many years, often accompanied by their grandsons. Kathryn is survived by her only child, Larry and his wife Dianne, Lower Ohio; grandsons, Aaron Bower and Dr. Neil (Glenda) Bower, both of Truro and her three great grandchildren, Megan, Alex and Katelyn. She also leaves behind, her only sister, Doris Butler, Halifax and a brother, Lawrence (Genevra) Holmes, Sandy point. In addition to Clyde and her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Netson and Bertrum Holmes and her niece Janie Butler. The funeral service was held on Monday, February 5, 2007 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne with Rev. Beverley Burlock officiating. Interment in Pine Grove cemetery, Shelburne.
