Cold winter weather is no reason to give up your daily walk.
Berwick’s walking club, the Steppers, admits to taking a bit of a break itself, but organizer Carol Boylan-Hartling with the Berwick Recreation Department says that’s about to change.
“Walking is fun, and it’s a simple way to participate in physical activity, she says.
She’s sent letters out to past walking club members and organized a series of walking activities - starting this Saturday, January 27 - to get people back on their feet.
“The walks won’t be that long, but I think it’s a great start and hopefully will encourage physical activity for those - like me - who have been putting it off.
Saturday at 9 a.m., Boylan-Hartling will gather old and new walkers alike at the town hall for a one kilometre trek around town. She’s got maps of town routes, distances and trails; and is willing to match people in smaller walking groups for more frequent walks throughout the week. The organized weekly walks will continue February 10 and 24.
“We plan to involve the Berwick school and, weather permitting, do some snowshoeing and cross-country skiing activities.
Boylan-Hartling is also registering the walking project with WinterActive, a national recreation program for communities and groups.
The Berwick town hall gym is also available for indoor walking throughout the year, busting winter excuses of cold and slippery conditions. You may walk indoors between noon and 1 p.m. weekdays.
“Twenty-six times around the gym is a mile, and it doesn’t take long to do that! Boylan-Hartling says.
