Georges DeRome is a master painter
Georges de Rome first came to Nova Scotia to visit his mother and step-father Major G. LaBel at Broad Cove.
The Label's operated the Sea Spray Studio, a silver jewellery and pottery studio and shop. It was here that Georges became fascinated by the beauty of our coastline.
While in Broad Cove he met and married Cathy McCabe, a Stellarton, N.S. girl, in 1976. Currently, Cathy teaches Grade 1V at the Dr. J.C. Wickwire Elementary School. They have two children, a daughter, Danielle, 18, who is attending St. Thomas University and a son, Marc, 13.
Georges was born in Montreal and attended school there. He is a self-taught artist and began painting at age 16. He presently turns out marvelous watercolor and oil paintings in his studio located in the basement of his home. His first love was oils. But by 1975 he was working completely in the watercolor medium.
When he first came to Beach Meadows be bought the house across the street from his present home. The property on the opposite side of the street contained a barn which fascinated Georges; and by 1982 he had converted the old barn into his 'Loft Studio", where he displays and sells his work during the summer season.
In 1998, deRome formed Acorn Studios Limited as the agent for his paintings and responsible for his artwork. He does his own mats and frames in his basement workshop.
For his first edition, from “Fallen Apples, he has used a full sheet watercolor painting titled “Fallen Apples as the background to be printed, and prior to printing blanked out part of the original and added one small acorn, which was not part of the original painting. He paints in the blanked-out section of each print. And as such, each will actually be an original painting of an apple. He has opted for an edition of 400, which is small enough to allow him to paint and personalize each piece. This makes each print more interesting and valuable to the owner and will permit him to stay out of the realm of mass production. Also, he numbers each piece according to the date it is completed and signed.
Each finished piece may be considered a small original painting of an apple. The concept and the finished product are both fascinating.
In his rural setting, bordering the ocean, Georges interprets local subjects in both oils and watercolors.
His paintings are owned in private collections in North America and Europe and are exhibited in galleries in Quebec and Nova Scotia. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Montreal and Nova Scotia.
Georges and Cathy are welcome additions to our community and both are contributing to our artistic and social milieu.
