December 24, 2006 to December 30, 2006 continued Willis Emery Clancy, 83, of Summerville, passed away Friday, December 29, 2006, in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, after a lengthy illness. Born in Hunts Point, he was a son of the late Robie and Joyce (Farmer) Clancy. Willis was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #38, Liverpool. He was a Veteran of WWII, having served as a cook. Following his time in the military, he continued his career as a chef at various Nova Scotia Hotels, but will be best remembered for “Clancy’s� butcher shop where he dispensed cooking advice with a pinch of humor. He later worked as a welder at Stenpro, Liverpool, retiring in 1987. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; daughters, Linda (Richard) Swain of Cape Negro, Coleen (Patrick) Ryan of Dartmouth; grandchildren: Erin, Shauna (Michael), Kaitlin, Liam; great-grandchildren: Luke, Josie, Ella, Hannah; sister, Elva (Frank) Wallace of Ottawa, Ont.; step-sister, Anne. He is predeceased by sisters, Theresa, Verna; brother, Vincent; several half-sisters and brothers; step-father, Thomas Charrette. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A memorial service and a Royal Canadian Legion service were held Tuesday, Jan. 2, from Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool; Rev. Arthur Nash officiated. December 24, 2006 to December 30, 2006 continued Ella Elizabeth Hyrtle - 66, Kentville passed away Friday, December 29, 2006 at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Middleton, she was a daughter of Polly (Meisner) Morse, Kentville and the late Harvey Morse. She is survived by her husband Bill MacDonald, Kentville; daughter Cindy (Rick) Huntley, Wilmot; sons Robert Hyrtle (Jolie Roy), Kentville and Gerald Hyrtle, Calgary and friend Wanda, New Minas; grandchildren Mary Anne, Marlana, Christa, Arianna, Kyle, Angela, Michelle, Tina, Katie and Nick; and a great grandson Owen Wagstaff; special friend and sister-in-law Mabel MacDonald and husband John Keddy, Wolfville; and a sister Dorothy Clarkson and family of BC. Besides her father, Ella was predeceased by her step father Wallace Chase; first husband Lester Hyrtle and great granddaughter Leotra. There was no visitation. Family flowers only by request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral memorial service was held at Serenity Funeral Home, 1212 Parkway Drive Port Williams Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. Rev. Ellen Hunt officiated. December 24, 2006 to December 30, 2006 continued Bernard Harold Mason - 79, Wolfville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2006, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS. Born in England, he was the son of the late Harold and Doris (While) Mason. Bernard was a research scientist for Shell in England before immigrating to Canada in early 1951. Since then, he has held positions both in the Municipal Government and at Acadia University. After retiring, Bernard and his wife Eleanor ran a Bed & Breakfast for several years. He also published three books. Bernard was an active member of several volunteer organizations, including Scouting and Rotary. Bernard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor (Lockhart ) Mason, daughter Daphne (Michael) Trenaman, son David (Sharon Rose); grandsons Chris, Jason, and Thomas in Canada, a sister Valerie and brother Victor in England. Bernard was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Doris (While) Mason, both of whom lived in the United Kingdom. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. The Memorial Service was held on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the St. John’s Church, Port Williams. Rev. David Garrett and Canon Sid Davies officiated. There was a reception directed by St. Michael’s Guild in the Parish Hall following the service. December 24, 2006 to December 30, 2006 continued Gerald Frederick Borden - 86, of Sheffield Mills, Kings County, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Sheffield Mills on August 31, 1920, he was a son of the late Harry and Eva (Newcombe) Borden. Over the years, he was employed as a farmer, working for E. I. Boates, Maple Leaf Farms and was self-employed at Habitant Fruit and Vegetables. He retired from Hostess Foods. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Gerald is survived by a brother, Allison Borden, Sheffield Mills; two sisters, Kay (Ken) Neary, Fenlon Falls, Ontario; Gertrude (Leo) Russell, Habitant. In addition to his immediate family, Gerald leaves behind his extended family of nieces and nephews, each who held a special place in his heart, as well as the children and grandchildren of his late wife. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Flora (Dill) Borden. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2007. Reverend Robert Billings officiated. Burial took place in the Hillaton Cemetery, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the IWK Health Centre, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or the Kings County Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. December 24, 2006 to December 30, 2006 continued Layton Henry Fisher - 85, of Aldershot, Kings County, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Alex and Annie (MacDonald) Fisher, Springhill. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the R.C.E.M.E. Following the war he was employed with the Veteran’s Land Act as a File Clerk for 13 years, until the program was phased out. He later became the manager and operator of the Shell service station in Kentville and retired in 1972. He served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment for over 20 years and held the rank of Warrant Officer. He was a former member of the I.O.O.F. Hiawatha Lodge No. 27, Kentville, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville and a member of Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot. He enjoyed camping, travelling and his R.V. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Joyce Barkhouse; a daughter, Connie Faber, Plymouth, Wisconsin; a son Terry, Humboldt, Saskatch-ewan; six grandchildren, Dennis, Tammy and Nick Faber, Mark, Allyson and Kelsey Fisher; eight great grandchildren,Jerry, Tiffany, Brittany, Nicole, Niomi, Noah, Nathan and Lauren; a half brother, Tom, British Columbia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Helen; a brother, Arthur; a half sister, Carol; a half brother, Sydney. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, December 31, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville with a Royal Canadian Legion service held at 7 p.m. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 1, 2007 in Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot. Pastor Thelma McLeod officiated. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to Bethany Memorial Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

December 24, 2006 to December 30, 2006 continued Reta Smith, 89, of South Brookfield, Queens County, formerly of Elmsdale, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 30, 2006. She was a daughter of the late George Edward and Elsie Mae (MacDonald) MacMillan. She was a member of Matthew’s Presbyterian Church, Elmsdale. She retired in 1982 from Simpsons, Halifax, after working several years in retail sales, then moving to South Brookfield. She is survived by sisters, Cora Keyes of Elmsdale, Mary Lowdon of King City, Ont.; brothers, Russell MacMillan of Truro, Wilfred MacMillan of Aurora, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by children of her late husband, Charles Smith; daughters, Linda, Millie; sons, Charlie, Gordie, Peter, Bob and children. She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter MacPhee; brother, Aubrey MacMillan; sister, Hilda Lee and Florence Diotte. Funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 4 at Ettingers Funeral Home; Rev. Gwen Roberts officiated. A reception followed at the funeral home. Spring burial in Sand Hill Cemetery, Nine Mile River. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
