December 10, 2006 to December 16, 2006 continued Guilford Boyd “Gil� Gates – 82, of Kentville, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Medford Mass., he was a son of the late Hanson and Viola (Beardsley) Gates. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the American Armed Forces. He was injured during the war and taken as a prisoner of war. Following the war he was employed as a commercial salesman, travelling throughout the Atlantic Provinces and the Gaspé Peninsula and was last employed with Tana, where he sold shoe products for over 18 years. He made Nova Scotia his home and was especially fond of the Annapolis Valley. He was an avid sportsman and was a member of both the Glooscap Curling Club and the Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club. He was an active member of both the Kentville Gyro Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. He maintained an active social life and he loved people. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife of 43 years the former, Blossom Matthews and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy and Marjorie; two brothers, Cortland and Ralph. There was no visitation by family request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion and funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 18, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, The Reverend Doctor Randy Crozsman officiated. A reception followed in the White Family Funeral Home Reception Room. Burial took place in the Berwick Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital or the Salvation Army. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
December 10, 2006 to December 16, 2006 continued Wayne Larry Young – 51, of Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, passed away Friday, December 15, 2006 in the home. Born in Halifax, on March 14, 1955, he was a son of Earl G. Young, Grand Pré and the late Jean (Scott) Young. Wayne will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He was always ready to tell you a joke or be told one himself. Wayne enjoyed music and was usually in attendance at the various festivals provided by the nursing home. In addition to his father, he is survived by his step-mother, Sheila, Grand Pré; his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Young, West Dublin; two step-sisters, Wanda Pulsifer, Amherst and Amy Pulsifer, Charlottetown, PEI; five nieces, Sarah, Jennifer, Lindsay, Morgan and Olivia. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his brother, Brian. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the management and staff of Evergreen Home for Special Care and a special thank-you to Wayne’s roommate, Robert “Bob� Chase, who over the years has taken special care of Wayne. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Robert Billings officiated. Burial will take place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Evergreen Home for Special Care Van Fund. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
December 10, 2006 to December 16, 2006 continued OSS, Captain Kevin Gregory – 48, of Porter’s Lake, Digby County, died Dec. 11, 2006, in Digby General Hospital. Born in Digby, he was a son of the late John and Kathleen (Banks) Ross. He worked very hard at everything he did. In partnership with Tom O’Neil, he was a proud captain of the Julie Ann Joan, always making sure his crew had the best to work with. In cooperation with DFO Science, Kevin was instrumental in the collection of data in support of the research and assessment of the inshore scallop stocks. Since 1998 he participated in 268 research sea days and played a major role in development of the SFA 29 fishery. He was very aware of research needs regarding the sustainability of the scallop fishery. He loved to entertain his friends and family, always overwhelming everyone with his generous hospitality, wonderful sense of humour, and loved every minute of it. Kevin leaves lasting memories to his children, Julie Ross (Matthew), Smith’s Cove; Jody Ross (Nancy), Porter’s Lake; their mother, Sherry Weir, Upper Clements; his newfound love, Amy Chisholm, Dartmouth; sisters, Grace (Robert) Turnbull, Smith’s Cove and Morden, Man.; Norma Selig (Oliver), Seabrook and Tusket, Yarmouth County; brothers, Walter (Rhoda), Culloden; Fred (Sharon), Rossway; Murray (Lorraine), Seabrook; Alan (Joan), Dartmouth, 24 nieces and nephews; and 26 great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Reginald; niece, Rebecca Selig; great-niece. Hannah Evans. Visitation was held at Jayne’s Funeral Home. Funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 16, in Jayne’s Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Cress officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society. December 10, 2006 to December 16, 2006 continued Marjorie MacLeod (Edwards), 88, of Truro – the MacLeod family matriarch – passed away peacefully at Colchester County Hospital on Thursday, December 14, 2006. She was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, to the late Benjamin and Josephine (Boutilier) Edwards. Marjorie spent her youth in Glace Bay, and attended Acadia University where she received her Diploma of Secretarial Sciences in 1940. Always a woman ahead of her time, she was on the Acadia swim and basketball teams (she could still fit in her jerseys and attended as many basketball games at the Halifax Metro Center that she could). She was also active in diving and synchronized swimming. In 1942, she married Dr. Lloyd Allan MacLeod; they moved to Malagash for a two-year period before settling in Liverpool until Lloyd’s retirement in 1986. While in Liverpool, Marjorie was an active citizen in the community. She was president of the Music Festival, president of the IODE, board member of the United Church Women, and the hospital auxiliary. She was also a member of the Liverpool Golf Club, involved in bridge, curling, tennis (many households next to the tennis club were woken at 7 a.m. by these ladies’ games) and various non-profit organizations. In 1986, Marge continued her wonder-woman ways in Truro. Recently, she kept her mind sharp and her competitive spirit alive, playing bridge (often for several days in a row), scrabble, the daily crosswords, reading, and any social celebration around. Most of all, she loved spending time with her cherished friends and family who will deeply miss her humor and “joie de vivre�. She is survived by a brother, Harold (Agnes) Edwards of Vancouver; sister-in-law, Marion Edwards of Annapolis Royal; son, Hugh Allan (Marilyn) MacLeod of Truro; daughters, Joanne ‘Jody’ (Carl) Holm of Halifax, Shelley MacLeod of Toronto, Ont.; many nephews and nieces; beloved grandchildren: the Holm’s, Jason (Maggie), Kristen, Carmen, Alexa, and the MacLeod’s, Brenton and Cameron; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Katie Holm. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Lloyd MacLeod; a son, George Cameron MacLeod; a brother, Bob Edwards. Visitation was held at Colchester Community Funeral Home, Saturday, Dec. 16, with funeral service there on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 pm. In Liverpool, a private family interment will take place Thursday, Dec. 28, followed by a public “Celebration of Life� at Lanes Privateer Inn from 2-4 p.m. Donations may be made to Queens General Hospital or a charity of your choice. December 10, 2006 to December 16, 2006 continued Cox, Rose Marie, 84, Brooklyn, Hants Co., passed away peacefully at home with loving family by her side on Saturday, December 16th, 2006. She has gone to her new home in Heaven. Born in Rockingham, Halifax Co., she was the eldest daughter of the late Hector and Mary (Rose) MacKinnon. From an early age, Rose was very active in her church, CGIT, Young Peoples Choir, Ladies Aid, and with her husband was a charter member of Birch Cove United Baptist Church. After moving to Brooklyn, She attended Windsor United Baptist Church. Rose is survived by her best friend and husband of 64 years, Donald Cox, Brooklyn, her son Royce (Mary) Cox, Toronto, daughter Rosemary Bowman, Windsor, daughter-in-law, Miriam Cox (Richard Heinz), River John, 9 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. Also surviving are former daughter-in-law and friend Pam Butt, Ontario, sisters Marjorie Coady and Marian (Jack) Coffin, Halifax. Besides her parents, Rose was predeceased by son Donald Lee Cox, sisters Avis (MacKinnon), Halifax, and Jean (Gordon) O‚dell, Ontario, and brother Jack in infancy. No visitation or flowers by request. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Windsor United Baptist Church with Rev. Jeffrey White officiating. Reception to follow under the direction of Merry Martha Group in which she was an active member. Private interment at a later date. Donations in Rose‚s memory May be made to charity of one‚s choice. Born in Danesville, he was a son of the late Harry and Verna (Whynot) Weagle. He was a former construction worker and worked with Christmas trees and cattle. Surviving are daughters, Patty (Darren Smicer), Darlene (Michael) Scott; son, Raymond; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Idella (Cyril) Weagle, Beverly Whynot. He was predeceased by sister, Goldie; brother, Raymond. Funeral was held Wednesday, Dec. 20 in Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool; Rev. Karen Ohrt officiated. Burial in Croft Cemetery, Danesville. Born in Springhaven, she was a daughter of the late William and Georgina White. Esther enjoyed fishing, playing guitar and tending to her vegetable garden. She is survived by her sons, Greg (Loretta), River Hebert; Owen (Myra), Saudi Arabia; daughter, Rosamond (Stuart) Revell, Mississauga, Ont.; brother, Trafton, Tusket; sisters, Gwen Batke and Phyllis Gunn, both of Ont.; grandchildren, Nicholas Frail (Amanda Richard), Calgary, Alta.; Neil Frail, River Hebert; Owen Jr. “OJ� and Ricky Frail, both of Saudi Arabia. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl; son, Ricky; sisters, Viva Richardson, Carrie White and Theora Mansfield. Cremation has taken place under the direction of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home. December 10, 2006 to December 16, 2006 continued HARVEY, James Raymond "Jimmy", age 82, of Union Corner, Hants County, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18th, 2006, at the Windsor Elms, Windsor. Born on May 23, 1924, in Union Corner, Hants County, he was a son of the late William and Minnie (Rushforth) Harvey. Jimmy was a carpenter by trade and a "Jack of all Trades". He retired from Kings-Edgehill School, Windsor, and had previously worked for several construction companies. He is survived by daughter, Carol (Wayne) Hutchinson, Greenwood; sons, Reid (Linda), Avonport; Mark (Annie), Union Corner; Matthew (Jaime), Centre Rawdon; Calvin (Mandi), Union Corner; grandchildren, Holly and Lori Hutchinson; William Boomer and Tristin Harvey; sisters, Minnie (Hugh) Burgess, Newport Station; Annie Harvey, Scotch Village; brothers, Daniel (Linda) Harvey, Scotch Village; John "Jack" (Louise) Harvey, Nictaux; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Frances Mae Dykens (February 2006); son, Robert in infancy; step-mother, Alice Rose (Rushforth); sisters, Lillian MacPherson, Gladys Harvey, and Bessie Sanderson; brothers, Louis and a brother, Eddie in infancy; also two stillborn siblings. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor, where the family received friends, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, December 20. Funeral service was, 2 p.m. Thursday, December 21, 2006, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev.
