John David Whitewood - 70 years young, of New Minas died on his early morning walk on December 8, 2006, when struck by a car. John was on his way to his favourite reading spot, Tim Horton’s on Commercial Street in New Minas. John was born in London, England on April 6, 1936 to parents now deceased, Henry and Edith. He came to Canada in the mid 1950’s to begin a new life where he soon met his beloved wife Belinda, who survives, grieving his loss. Also left in sadness are daughters, Kathryn and Amanda and her fiancé, Andrew Palmer; granddaughters, Sarah, Jennifer, Samantha, Madison and grandson, Christopher; brothers, Alan and Ron, Steve, Philip and Susan Robinson; and dearest friend, Jim Hewey. One of John’s greatest passions, along with the love for his darling Belinda, was to spend two weeks every second year with his childhood friends – Bill Leon, Dave Griffiths and Henry Morris. The four of them would set out on a canoe adventure, braving the elements and daring their bodies to rise to the occasion. All now in their seventies, the summer ahead was eagerly awaited with a trip planned to Cape Breton. John Whitewood wrote in July of 1998 – To the Spirit of the 250 Squadron We cannot halt the slow decay, nor stay the coming of the night. But must we meekly fade away, without a struggle or a fight. A fight we cannot win and yet, a chance to re-confirm our lives. To see them all without regret, and sanctify the one who strives. This summer, his life will be celebrated with family and friends, his ashes given to the sea with our never-ending love. A memorial gathering was held on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers or donations kindly give to The Children’s Wish Foundation or give a book to someone you don’t know, someone who might learn something new about this world and those who wander its path. John’s life was spent loving his family and friends – the pursuit of knowledge his daily quest. A moment shall not pass without his love in our hearts and might we carry his nobility with our every step. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
