November 26 to December 2, 2006 Ethel "Idell" MacBride - 57, of Canning, Kings County, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Benjamin) Parker. She was self-employed as a hairdresser for many years and enjoyed bowling, gardening and crafts. She is survived by her husband, Terry, a daughter, Leisa (James) Fraser, Look Off, Kings County; a son, Leon (Sharon Casey), Canning; two sisters, Althea (Weldon) Tupper, Scott's Bay; Roberta Purcell, Kingston; a foster brother, Floyd Steeves, Alberta; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Kaitlyn Fraser, Alley MacBride, Kayla and Bethany Casey; nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service followed by a reception was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2006, Reverend Clyde Lowe officiated. Burial took place in the Hillaton Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
November 26 to December 2, 2006 Dora Evelyn Hatt, 94, of Mersey Point passed away Sunday, November 26, 2006 at the Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in East Port Medway, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Blanche (Dagley) Cross. Dora was an avid knitter, crocheter and sewer. She loved her children and grandchildren She is survived by her daughters: Marion White of Liverpool, Marie Tarr of Western Head, Rita (David) Hatt of Milton, Doris (Steven) Francis of Mersey Point; sons: James (Beryl) of Mersey Point, Laurie (Phyllis) of Dartmouth; daughter-in-law, Jackie of Montreal, Québec; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Winton; sons: Frederick and Murray; sister, Ethel; brothers: Gerald, Paul, Harry, Eric, and Laurie in infancy. Funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 29 all at Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool; Rev. Greg Denton officiated. Burial in the Liverpool United Baptist Cemetery. November 26 to December 2, 2006 Lorna Frances MacKinnon died peacefully at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on November 28th after a brief illness. Born on January 9, 1936 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton Island, Lorna was the only daughter of Mary and Bernard MacKinnon. Having moved with her family to Kentville in 1941, she graduated from King’s County Academy in 1954 and was later employed in the Libraries Division at the Kentville Research Station (now the Kentville Agricultural Centre). She was predeceased by her parents and by two brothers, Ronald and Bernard, Jr., and is survived by brothers Charles, Halifax, and Ian, Madrid, Spain, as well as five nephews and five nieces. Lorna’s family would like to express its gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and administrators who provided her with expert and compassionate care at The Elms in Wolfville, the Valley Regional Hospital, Tidal View Manor in Yarmouth, and the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. A private memorial service is planned.
November 26 to December 2, 2006 Kathryn Anne Marie White - 45, New Minas. On November 28, 2006, cancer claimed our Kate. She put up a helluva fight, winning a few rounds, pinning her adversary against the ropes at times, but it was not enough. It robbed her of the life she so dearly deserved. She died as she lived - giving her all. Kathryn was born in Winnipeg, Man., on January 6, 1961, and was educated there until 1974, when the family moved to Calgary, Alta. Upon graduation she studied hairdressing and floral design. 1980 brought her to Nova Scotia working first in Halifax as a hairdresser, a title searcher and as a car rental agent, making countless friends wherever she went. For the past 14 years Kate had resided in the Valley, working again as a stylist, florist and a waitress. She possessed a joie de vivre, a love of laughter and a genuine interest in people that drew them to her and for which she will be forever embedded in our hearts. She was predeceased by her parents, Cecile and Al Harrison, and her great-niece, Gillian Mundy. Kate is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas and his daughter Brooke White; her children, Jessica and Graham, their father and very dear friend, Bedford Williams, Edmonton, Alta.; her sister, Pat (Jon) roberts, Enfield; brothers, Glenn (Linda), Calgary, Alta.; Richard (Gwen), Edmonton, Alta.; Neil (Cheryl)), Kelowna, B.C.; Michael, Winnipeg, Man.; nieces and nephews, Christopher, Jennifer and Kealey, Jamie and Christopher, Patrick, David and Jonathan, Adrian, Robin, Rebecca, Kelsey and John. There was no visitation for Kate by the family’s request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Saturday, December 2, at 2 p.m. in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville, 902-678-2151. Rev. Bruce Mathews officiated. Family flowers only, please. November 26 to December 2, 2006 CROWELL, Bernard Fielding “Pat� - Passed away peacefully at home in Central Argyle on November 28, 2006, surrounded by his family. Born March 17, 1920, in Argyle Head, he was a son of the late Everette and Deliah Crowell. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elsie (Roberts); daughters, Brenda Morton and friend Carl Surette, Eel Brook; Sandra and Russell Butler, Central Argyle; Kathleen MacDonald, Glenwood; Earlene and David Peshnak, Cambridge, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Pat, Yarmouth; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; brother, Ken Crowell, Argyle Head; sister, Alice St. Hilaire, Byfield, Mass. He was predeceased by son, Martin, in 2000; grandson, Mark, in 2002; brother, Ralph; sisters, Hazel, Nellie, and Agnes. Bernard was a Merchant Marine navy veteran and a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 94, Argyle Pubnico, until it closed. He was a lobster fisherman for many years and previous to that he was a stevedore at the Halifax waterfront. He was a member of Argyle Pubnico United Baptist Church of which he was a former deacon and choir member for many years. Bernard "Pat" Crowell rested in Argyle Pubnico United Baptist Church in Central Argyle, where visitation was held Thursday, Nov. 30 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. with a Legion service at 7:30 p.m., and where funeral service was held Friday, December 1, at 3 p.m., Pastor Raymond Pitcher officiated. November 26 to December 2, 2006 Rupert Earl "Jess" Martin - 87, of Waterville, Kings County passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Russell and Viola (Barkhouse) Martin. He had been employed for 38 years as a heavy equipment operator with the Town of Kentville. He was a veteran of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department, enjoyed all types of sports and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Susan Johnson; six children, Darrell (Darlene), British Columbia; Dale Martin (Sheldon Schofield), Alberta; Donna Martin (Bev Sheffield), Centreville; Darlene (Don) Muise, Kentville; Donalda Martin (Bev Mosher), Kentville; Delma Gates (Rick Johnstone), Billtown; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Graham and Pauline Ward; four brothers, Garnet "Bun", Donald, Lloyd and Arthur; his step-father, Charlie Rogers. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2006, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kentville Volunteer Fire Department Padre, Jeffrey Hosick officiated. November 26 to December 2, 2006 SURETTE, Goldie Juanita - 76, Windsor, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 29, 2006, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born at Noel Road, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred and Mildred (Rosal) Hines. Goldie was a very active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch 009, Windsor. She was also active at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, and was Past President of the CWL, and she was a member of the Avon Valley Golf and Country Club. Goldie loved children and she treated all of her nieces and nephews like they were her own grandchildren, she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Goldie is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Jim Surette; sons, Rick, Dartmouth; Roger (Mary), Dartmouth; Dennis (Kim), Bishopville; grandchildren, Chris, Kelly, David, Jillian; great-granddaughter, Hannah; sisters, Cora (Bill) Lawrence, Falmouth; Loretta (Ron) Kent, Dartmouth; Margaret (Dave) Seeley, Windsor; Barbara (Mike) Wyman, Windsor; brother, Lloyd (Bev), Moncton, N.B.; sister-in-law, June DeMont; several nieces and nephews. Goldie was predeceased by her brother, Richard. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 30. Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. Friday, December 1, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, King Street, Windsor, Rev. Father J.J. MacDonald officiated. Interment was held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Goldie were requested to be made to Huntington Society of Canada, 151 Frederick St., Suite 400, Kitchener, ON N2H 2M2 or Senior Citizens Bus Society of Dykeland Lodge, 124 Cottage St., Windsor, NS B0N 2T0. The family extends a special thanks to all the care workers, nurses and staff of Dykeland Lodge, for all their loving care that they gave Goldie.
