November 19 to November 25, 2006 continued Bradford Andrew Benjamin - 84, of Arlington, Kings County, passed away Monday, November 20, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Scotts Bay, Kings County, he was a son of the late Adelbert and Ethel (Bennett) Benjamin. In addition to being a life-long hobby farmer, he was employed as a truck driver, worked at Shur-Gain in Canning and Port Williams, worked with the Department of Highways, and retired from the Kings County Amalgamated School Board. He had been a former member of the I.O.O.F. in Canning. He is survived by his wife, the former Greta Cox; three daughters, Deborah (Clarence) Lynk and Barbara (Leon) Sheffield, both of Arlington; Tammy (Donald) Moffatt, Oromocto, New Brunswick; a son, Bradford (Pat), Canning; eight grandchildren, Mark and Marchell Lynk, Krista and Scott Sheffield, Brandon, Jordan and Bradford Benjamin and David Moffatt; four great grandchildren, Tazz, Ashley, Selena and Hayden; a sister, Gloria (Gerald) Nauss, Berwick; several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Parker and Greta Barkhouse. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 23, 2006. Burial took place in the Arlington Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital or the charity of your choice. November 19 to November 25, 2006 continued JACQUARD, George Leonard – 78, Pearl Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2006, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born June 26, 1928 in Plymouth, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late Forman and Clemente (Cottreau) Jacquard. He worked as a landscaper for Knowles Crosby, and worked as groundskeeper for both the Yarmouth Airport as well as the Town of Yarmouth. George enjoyed yard sales and flea markets. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Dora (Saulnier) Jacquard, as well as his children, Junior (Edwina), Doris (Mickey), Vernon (Dora), Helen (Derrick), Freddie (Missy), Debbie (Paul), Kim (Ernie), along with 36 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Brittain, Yarmouth; Marie (George) Poole, British Columbia. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughter, Anne Foote; brothers, Lawrence Jacquard, Ralph Jacquard, Peter Jacquard and Vernon Carson. Visitation took place from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2006, with prayers at 7:30 p.m., both in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. Born in Bellsland, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Annie Hann. She was a member of Sandford Wesleyan Church and was a caretaker at the G.M. Hope Estates for many years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; half-brothers, Harold and Victor. November 19 to November 25, 2006 continued NEWCOMBE, Raymond "Wayne" - 55, Windsor, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Sunday, November 19, 2006, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Windsor, he was the son of Elva (O'Leary) and the late Raymond Newcombe. After retiring from Newcombe's Vending Service, Wayne then went on to own and operate Windsor Recycling, which he just recently retired from. In his retirement Wayne had become an avid antique collector. When Wayne wasn't at home or work, you could often find him socializing at Tim Horton's. He is survived by his wife, the former Christine Fader; daughter, Teria (Jamie) Rogers, Falmouth; son, Jody (Carmen Purdy), Falmouth; grandchildren, Shelby and Evan Burton, Alexa Purdy; sisters, Donna (Ron) Bell, Ontario; Joan Brown, Windsor; Sandra (Ken) Swan, Windsor; several nieces and nephews. Born in Fairville, N.B. she was a daughter of the late Charles Edward and Harriett Agnes (Parker) Howard. She had worked at M.W. Graves Ltd., Avon Foods and at Webster Farms. Lillian was a long-time member of the Waterville Baptist Church and had been a volunteer cook at the Truth for Youth Bible Camp, Blomidon. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and great-aunt. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Margaret Rose (James) Benjamin, Edmonton, Alberta; Evelyn Louise Miller and Carol May (Millage) Dorey, all of Waterville; foster-daughter, Susan Doyle, Cambridge; grandchildren, Billy, David, Carol-Ann; Anita and Amy; Dwight and Chad: several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Eva Curry. Marjorie always enjoyed hosting Sunday dinner and holiday gatherings for family and friends. November 19 to November 25, 2006 continued Arthur William Ross - in his 77th year, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2006 at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario. He was the last surviving member of his family. Arthur is survived by his spouse, Ardythe (Rawding), his children, Charles (Ruth), Susanne (George), Shirley (Cliff), Marilyn (Daniel) and David, 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Bertha (Hiltz) Ross, Waterville, NS, his brother Dennis, and a great-granddaughter, Emily Jeanne Hart. Before his retirement, Art managed the Kitchener branch of Canadian Cutting & Coring. Cremation has taken place, followed by a private family memorial. Born in New Minas, she was a daughter of the late George and Evelyn (Banks) Roy. Prior to taking on the role of homemaker, she was employed with Kentville Publishing. She devoted her life to her family and enjoyed flowers and watching the birds. She is survived by a daughter, Janet (Bill) MacLellan, Berwick; two sons, Grant (Heather), Halls Harbour; Wade, Coldbrook; two sisters, Diane (Fred) Walsh, New Minas; Jean (Darrell) Moore, Church Street, Kings County; a brother, George Roy Jr., Halls Harbour; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Alden; a sister, Doreen Roy. November 19 to November 25, 2006 continued Jeremiah Lindsay "Jerry" Foote - 85, of Centreville, Kings County, passed away Friday, November 24, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Ross Corner, Kings County, on June 1, 1921, he was a son of the late Lindsay and Gladys Myra (Dodge) Foote. Jerry was a long-time farmer and logger, growing a wide range of fruits and vegetables from strawberries, potatoes and corn to beef and pork. He was always an active and athletic man who enjoyed the outdoors and hard work. In the last 20 years of his working life, he enjoyed working with his truck for the Department of Highways and Standard Paving. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the Canadian Army in the 1940’s. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, the former Dorothy Amelia Graves; a daughter, Gertrude (Leo) Gargan, Halifax; his sons, Bradley (Rosalie), Centreville; Wayne (Paulette) and Radford (Tracey), both of Ross Corner; Bev (Darlene), Somerset; grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Clarke; Jennifer Royal; Cheryl Rhynard; Michael, Mason, Dominique, Jason, Justin, Jeremy and Tyler Foote; a sister, Marjorie (Eldwin) Brewster, New Minas; brothers, Lawrence (Doreen), Ross Corner; Clifford, Kentville. He was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis (Karl) Schmidt; a son-in-law, Tom Clarke. November 19 to November 25, 2006 continued David Roy Shaffelburg - 67, of Port Williams, Kings County, died peacefully Saturday evening November 25, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with Leukemia. He was born in Halifax on December 15, 1938, the son of the late Roy and Gladys (Peckham) Shaffelburg. He was a graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School, Dalhousie University (BA), Pine Hill Divinity College (Masters of Theology), U.P.E.I. (B.Ed.) and Acadia University (M.Ed.). He served as an ordained minister of the United Church of Canada in Walton, Hants County; Woodlawn United Church, Dartmouth; Hillcrest United Church, Montague, PEI and Park Royal United Church, Charlottetown, PEI. He worked for a short time for the Human Rights Commission of Nova Scotia. His dedication to young people led him to become a teacher and guidance counsellor at West Kings Rural High School and Horton District High School until his retirement in 1997. During this time he enjoyed organizing and chaperoning several trips for students to various countries in Europe and recently organized a trip for adults. He also loved his role as producer for several Horton High School musicals. He was involved in his community as a past chairman of the Wolfville Boy Scouts Group Committee and was on various boards including the Windsor Elms, the Port Williams Community Centre and Family and Children’s Services. He was an active member of the Port Williams United Baptist Church. During the past 20 years, he was a member of the Canadian Kennel Club and the Maritime Golden Retriever Club. He enjoyed training, breeding and showing Golden Retrievers and was often seen walking his dogs through the village. He enjoyed golf and curling and was a member of both the KenWo Golf Club and the Glooscap Curling Club. He loved travelling and spending time at his cottage on Sherbrooke Lake with his family. The most important thing in his life was his love and devotion to his family. He is survived by his loving wife and constant companion, Margery (King); his children, Heather (Alex) Crouse, Port Williams; Michael (Linda), Port Williams; Paul (Reni), Halifax and Ann (David) Greener, Port Williams. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Elizabeth), Halifax and several nieces and nephews. He was very proud of his 11 grandchildren, Brian, Benjamin, Sarah, and Jennifer Crouse, Zachary, Jessica and Jacob Shaffelburg, Connor and Samarah Shaffelburg, and Luke and Bennet Greener. His faith and spirit continued through his seven-month battle with Leukemia. He was so grateful to the nurses, doctors, hospital staff, family, friends and even strangers who touched his life. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service took place at 3 p.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2006 in the Port Williams United Baptist Church, Reverend David Ogilvie officiated. Internment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Valley Regional Hospital - MRI Fund.
