Former rum-runner turns 101
Mervyn Corkum turned 101 years old on Nov. 7.

The Lunenburg County resident came to Liverpool to go fishing on sailing vessels before he began rum running in the 1920s.

Corkum plied the waters as a rumrunner from the late 1920's into the late 1930's and then went into the merchant navy throughout the war, retiring to work many years as a contractor in Lunenburg and Queens counties from the 60's onward.

During his long life he says "I saw a lot, some good and some wasn't so good"

He enjoys a good joke and a good meal.

On his birthday the 101 year old played host to numerous visitors and calls from well-wishers young and old.

He has a quick wit and resides at Happy Haven Seniors Residence in Petite Riviere.
