It doesn't seem right
Editorial from the Liverpool Advance
Nov 11 is a special day.
So important, it is one of the few days, now that Sunday shopping is allowed in the province, that stores are closed, and everything seemingly comes to a standstill.
The silence is broken though. And by of all things … rifle shots.
When people are supposed to be spending the day off reflecting on the sacrifices of our soldiers and remembering why war is so terrible, the woods of Queens County are full of hunters.
Something doesn’t seen right with that.
And this isn’t a comment on the sport of hunting. We understand that the province uses hunting as an effective management tool for the deer herd. It is also an important tradition.
On the other side it is equally puzzling why hunters can’t hunt on Sundays? If we can shop on Sundays, why are the boys (and girls) in orange prohibited from venturing out in the woods?
So why are hunters prohibited from hunting on Sundays but are allowed to hunt on Remembrance Day?
On the face of it, that makes little or no sense.
We think it’s a good question, one that the province should answer.
And on the next Nov. 11, and every Remembrance Day from now on, we would hope not to hear gunshots.
