November 5 to November 11, 2006 EYRE (Beck), Winnie - Quispamsis, N.B., formerly of Yarmouth, passed away quietly in her 92nd year at home in the company of her family. Winnie was born in Dartmouth in 1915, the youngest daughter of Harry and Winifred (Gordon) Beck. She spent her youth in Upper Musquodoboit where her father owned and operated the creamery. She later moved to Halifax where she subsequently met her husband of 65 years, Ralph Eyre, who survives her. She is also survived by her son, Ken (Carole Milligan), Annapolis Royal; daughter, Heather d'Entremont (Ray d'Entremont), Quispamsis, N.B.; grandchildren, Peter d'Entremont, Saint John, N.B., and Corrine d'Entremont, Austin, Tex. She was predeceased by sisters, Jean, Margaret, Doris, and Shirley. Winnie and Ralph and their children lived in, British Columbia, Quebec, the Yukon and Ontario until Ralph's retirement from the Canadian Army in 1963 when they settled on a farm in Central Chebogue, Yarmouth Co. Over the next 39 years, Winnie and Ralph prospered at the "House at the End of the Rainbow" combining a working farm with their jointly shared passion for driftwood art. While Ralph collected and shaped their famous driftwood bird sculptures, it was Winnie who did the fine finishing and polishing. Between the two of them they probably produced over 10 thousand pieces that were sold in craft shops throughout Nova Scotia as well as at their own studio gallery on the farm. Winnie was a keen observer of nature and took exceptional pleasure in birdwatching. Perhaps one of the more enduring images of her is perched on her ride-on lawn mower, cutting the several acres of grass surrounding the farmhouse. She presided as "mistress of ceremonies" over innumerable parties and social gatherings at the farm and on family picnics and outings. In the evening, she was a serious and skilled bridge player. A formidable angler, Winnie fished throughout Canada and was active with rod and reel until her mid 80s. She preferred fishing for Nova Scotia brook trout above all others. A memorial service was held in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8. Immediately following the service, a traditional Eyre "Happy Hour" to celebrate Winnie's life was held at their former farm, now the property of Bill and Cheryl Eyre in Central Chebogue. Her ashes will be interred privately by the family at a later date in Mountain Cemetery, Yarmouth. Friends are invited to make a contribution in her name to a charity of their choice.
