October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued Blanche Evangeline Wood - 102, Berwick. Our mother Blanche Evangeline Wood died at Grand View Manor, Berwick, November 2, 2006. Born at North Grand Pre she was the daughter of the late Harry and Jessie (Taylor) Palmeter. Blanche attended Acadia Seminary, Wolfville and attended nursing training at the Yarmouth Hospital. In later years she lived in Canning and was one of the founders of the Seniors Horizon's Club. Everyone who knew mother remembers her sense of humor. She took great pleasure in her gardening and quilting, while at Grand View Manor she made quilts and also cushions for the children's hospital, patients and manor craft sales. Surviving are daughters Auleen (Richard) Harvie, Sheffield Mills; Betty MacKinlay, Bedford; son James (Marjorie) Allen, Stanhope, P.E.I., daughter-in-law Mabel Morine, Port Coquitlam, B.C.; 20 grandchildren, many great- grandchildren and four nieces and two nephews. Blanche was predeceased by sons Arthur Morine, B.C. and Malcolm Allen, Aylesford, N.S., grandson Keith Morine, B.C.; brothers Beverly Palmeter and Kenneth Palmeter who were victims of World War l, Harold Palmeter and sisters Evelyn (Kenneth) Ritchie and Edith (Frank) Woodworth. Cremation has taken place, service of remembrance was held Monday, November 6, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Rev. Elizabeth Johnson officiated with interment at the Horton Cemetery Grand Pre at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued Elsie Emma McAloney - 101, of Kentville, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in West Brook, Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Smith and Sarah (Skidmore) Pettigrew. She had been employed as a clerk and later became the first female to be employed in the capacity of Manager with the former Agnew Surpass Shoe Company in Springhill. She was a member of the Anglican Church and was associated with St. George’s Anglican Church in Parrsboro and more recently with St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and knitting, especially her special "Grandma’s Mittens". She is survived by a daughter, Muriel (Vernon) Vickery, Kentville; five grandchildren, William (Judith) Vickery, Edwin (Amy) Vickery, Susan (Peter) Arntfield, Michael (Ingrid) Dick and Lloyd (Andrea) Dick; eight great-grandchildren, Karen, Allison, Laura and Lexington Vickery, Margot Arntfield, Kenneth, Wynne and James Dick; a special niece, Sarah Wetmore; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd McAloney; a daughter, Dorothy Dick; a son-in-law, Gordon Alexander "Sandy" Dick; four sisters, Lucy Pettigrew, Nellie Skidmore, Frances Dodge, Christine Cole; six brothers, James, Stanley, Harry, Howard, Basil and Hedley; two infant brothers, Otto and Percy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. There was no visitation by family request. A funeral service followed by a reception was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 5, 2006 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, The Reverend Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiatied. Burial will take place at a later date in St. George’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Parrsboro. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice. October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued Jessie Dickenson Hay - 84, of Coldbrook, Kings County, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully Monday, October 30, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, Nova Scotia. Born in Cambuslang, Scotland, she was the only daughter of the late John S. and Agnes Lawrie. She was educated in Glasgow and after graduating from Business College, went to work for Collins, the Book Publishers. She left Collins to help nurse her terminally ill father, which temporarily exempted her from Military Service during the Second World War, until the death of her father. While awaiting her call-up papers she went to work as a temporary secretary at the Merchant Navy Officers and Engineers Association, very quickly moving into a full time position with this association as Branch Secretary which exempted her from Military Service. She held the position of Branch Secretary for 13 years and became part of a team, that proved to be very effective in improving salary and leave conditions as well as fringe benefits for not only Association members, but all Masters, Mates and Engineers. She met David Erskine Hay and they were married in 1949. When her husband became Master, she went to sea with him and traveled extensively when he was engaged in the crude oil trade from the Persian Gulf to the Far East. She was predeceased by her husband, Captain David Erskine Hay. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Squadron Leader Ret’d. Peter Hay (R.A.F.), England; four nieces, Mrs. Penny Sampson, and Miss Caroline Mason, Edinburgh; Mrs. Jenny Wright and Miss Gillian Barker of Norwich, England; a nephew, Grant Mason, Hong Kong. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. There will be no visitation by family request. A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, November 5, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Chapel, Kentville. A reception followed in the reception room. October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued William George "Roland" Hiscoe -87, of Steam Mill, Kings County, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, October 30, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital,Kentville. Born in Somerset on January 1, 1919, he was a son of the late William and Esther (Parrish) Hiscoe. He was an overseas veteran of the Second World War, serving in England, Germany, Belgium, Holland and France and was especially proud to be a part of the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. Following the war, he had been self-employed as a painting contractor, from where he retired. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking and working in his wood lot. Spending time with his family and friends was a special part of his life, especially the times spent at the cottage. He was always eager to lend a helping hand and volunteered when needed. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, the former Linda Parker; two sisters, Marion Richards, Middleton; Irene Hyson, Digby; a brother, Wylie, New Minas; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces and great grand nephews. He also had a love for his cat, Rhoddy. He was predeceased by three sisters, Eva Wood, Elizabeth "Betty" Colford and Queenie Walker; two brothers, Ainley and Wallace. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2006 with a Royal Canadian Legion service held at 7 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2006, Pastor Thelma McLeod officiated. A private family burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued Beatrice Annie Dunning - 87, of Meadowvale, Annapolis County, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Three Brooks, Pictou County, she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Gladys (Gammon) Allen. She had been employed as a nurse’s aid in a private hospital in Comox, British Columbia. She was a member of the Granville Beach United Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the choir and a former deacon. She traveled with her husband through several military postings, including Germany, Italy, Scotland, the United States and throughout Canada. She is survived by her husband, Dennis; three daughters, Yvonne (Walter) Schneider, Spruce Grove, Alberta; Darlene (Richard) Parker, Fanny Bay, British Columbia; Laurinda Richard, Aylesford; six grandchildren, Randy, Danny, Dennis and Cindy Schneider, Carissa Milbury and Brandon Richard; three great grandchildren, Kyle Corbett, Andrew and Crystal Schneider; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by several brothers and sisters; two grandsons, Gary Schneider and Stephen Parker. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. There was no visitation by family request. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2006 in the Granville Beach United Baptist Church, Reverend Elizabeth Waugh officiated. October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued Minard Arthur O’Connell, 90, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2006 in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. Born in Stoney Island, he was a son of the late Henry and Gertrude (Ross) O’Connell. He served in the Merchant Navy. After being torpedoed and surviving for six days, he returned home and in 1941 joined the Canadian Navy, where he was made Chief Petty Officer. He was a long-time member of Port LaTour United Baptist Church. He is survived by his daughter, Laura (Stanley) Kelley, Port Saxon; brothers, Loran (Bus) O’Connell, East Baccaro, Henry (Miff) O’Connell Jr., Little River Harbour; sister, Joyce (Calvell) (Chester) Christie, Smithsville; granddaughters, Annie (Toby) Perry, North West Harbour, Lorie (Mark) Nearing, Truro; great grandchildren, Cody, Chelsea, Jarrett, Jordan and Jaiden. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys (Keel) O’Connell and sister, Violet Surette. The funeral service was held on Sunday, November 5, 2006 in H. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, with Rev. Robie Atkinson officiating. He is laid to rest in Woodside Cemetery, Port LaTour. Memorial donations may be made to the Port LaTour United Baptist Church.
October 29 to November 4, 2006 continued SMITH, Carl Alvin “Smitty the Bus Driver� - 73, Argyle Street, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 3, 2006, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born February 11, 1933, in Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., he was the son of the late Otis A. and Irene U. (Caldwell) Smith. In his younger years, Carl worked on a local farm, worked as a fisherman, and also worked at Trefry's Garage. He then gave the next 18 years of his life to the RCR (2nd Battalion, Airborne). Following his retirement from the military, he was a school bus driver for the next 22 years, where he became affectionately know as "Smitty the Bus Driver". During this time, Carl also worked part-time as security at K-Mart, as well as working at Pied Piper Music, and was also a truck driver for RC Cola. Carl loved ponies and bluegrass music, and was an excellent fiddler, having passed his musical talents to his children. He and his wife were awarded 12 Mayflower Awards for the beautiful yard they kept. Surviving are his wife, with whom he shared the last 26 years of his life, C. Lorraine (Clements) Smith, as well as their children, Wayne (Laurie) Smith, Tusket; David (Rhonda) Smith, Chebogue; stepchildren, Sheldon Clements, Yarmouth; Douglas (Jennifer) Rhyno, Lakeside Road, Yarmouth; Denise (Paul) Levarie, Edson Foote Road, Chegoggin; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Clara (George) Goodwin, British Columbia; Nancy (Clinton) Penney, Chegoggin. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by stepson, Lynn (Janice) Clements, as well as sister, Betty Lou Michaels. There was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held 11 a.m. Monday in H.M. Huskilson's Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth, Rev. A.D. "Bill" Newell officiated. Born in Yarmouth on May 16, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Mae (Langthorne) Cook. She was a member of Temple United Baptist Church and held several church positions. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by daughter, Debbie (Bernie) Pothier, Wedgeport; grandchildren, Derek, Terra, and Lyndsey; great-grandchild, Logan. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank and brothers, Donald, Ken, and Malcolm. Family flowers only, donations in memory may be made to Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. He was born on August 6, 1923, in Glenwood to George and Bertha (Hurlburt) Raynard. He was a member of the Argyle Pubnico United Baptist Church. He was a member of the Masons and New Horizons. He owned and operated V & E Raynards. He was also a farmer who loved camping and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Willetta J. Roberts; son, Warren (Sharon), Glenwood, Yarmouth Co.; daughters, Donna (Ken) Spinney, Central Argyle; Wanda (Roger) D'Entremont, Glenwood; Brenda (Jerome), D'Eon, Lower West Pubnico; brother, Vernon (Lillian), Glenwood, Yarmouth Co.; sister, Avis Wheeler, Glenwood, Yarmouth Co.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Elmer and Lloyd; sisters, Evelyn Roberts and Ruth. Visitation was held Monday, Nov. 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Rev. Raymond Pitcher officiated, both in Argyle Pubnico United Baptist Church.
