October 29 to November 4, 2006 SMITH, Charles Edward - 77, Digby, passed away Sunday October 29, 2006 in Digby. Born in Ashmore, Digby Co., he was a son of the late John and Margaret (Mallett) Smith. Charles and his family moved to Natick, Mass,in the U.S in 1965 and worked for Merchants Tires until 1974 when he and his family moved to Lr.Sackville at which time Charles worked for A&B Tire for a short time. He then worked for the Commissionaires until he had to retire early due to illness. In 1979 he and his family moved “home� back to Digby. Charles was a member of the Canadian Legion, Digby branch as he served in the Army and received a medical discharge in the late 1950’s. Grampie will be missed by all of us but especially by Stephanie & Brycen. Charles is survived by companion Dorothy Moore, Digby; daughter Margaret (Rex) Halliday, Rossway, Digby Co.; son Howard (Helen), Alberta; grandchildren, Brycen and Stephanie Halliday, Andrew and Courtney Smith; sisters, Elsie Melanson, Ashmore; Irene Melanson, Gilberts Cove; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Ethel Baker; brothers, Earl; Arthur; Fred and Albert; infant brother Walter, sisters, Stella and Marion Church service was held at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Digby November 1, 2006.Cremation has taken place. A grave side/intermittent will be held immediately after in the Holy Cross Cemetery ,Plympton, Digby County with Father Keith Billiard officiating. Donations in Charles memory may be made to the Auxiliary of the Digby General Hospital or Heart & Stroke Foundation. October 29 to November 4, 2006 Hogan, Raymond Stephen, Captain - Died suddenly at sea on October 29, 2006. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Isabel; baby brother David and former wife Louise. Leaving to mourn, special friend Linda; son Christopher; daughters Sheri(Stan) Crowell and Jackie Muise. Brothers Gerry (Linda); Patrick (Katherine); Richard (Michelle); Sisters Mary(Frank): Paula (Roger); Rowena (John) and Lillian (John). Grandchildren; Kyle, Raegan and Jevan Crowell. As well as a large number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, St. John's, NL. Funeral service to be held at Caul's Memorial Chapel. Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation.
October 29 to November 4, 2006 SURETTE, Lucille Marie – 93, Nakile Home for Special Care, Argyle, Yarmouth Co., and formerly of Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born July 6, 1913 in Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Francoise Anne (Babin) Bourque. She worked as a homemaker and was a member of Saint Anne’s parish, as well as being a member of the charismatic movement. Lucille was a very devoted mother to her handicapped son for 50 years. Surviving are a sister, Bernadette Armstrong, Bell Neck, as well as sixteen nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Joseph Surette; her son, Paul Surette; sisters, Victoire “Vicky� Bourque, Pauline Surette; a brother, Leo Burke. Visitation took place from 7 to 9 Thursday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St. Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 AM, Friday, November 3, 2006 from Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Father Crepin Khonde officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. October 29 to November 4, 2006 SUTTON, Edward Alphonse – 62, Trinity Place, Yarmouth, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2006, at home. Born April 9, 1944 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Agnes Sutton. He was a retired salesman and was a great athlete. He enjoyed coaching basketball, as well as playing golf and taking in local sports, especially baseball. Surviving are his wife, Grace (McCarthy) Sutton; sons, Michael, Jeffrey, Barry and Jeremy; a daughter, Monica; 10 grandchildren; an aunt, Stella Doucette, as well as several cousins. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held Saturday afternoon at 2 PM in H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Deacon Stephen Bourque officiated. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. October 29 to November 4, 2006 HUBLEY, Griffin Archibald - 95, Darlings Lake, Yarmouth Co., passed away November 2, 2006, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on September 23, 1911, in Lequille, Annapolis Co., he was a son of the late Griffin A. and Grace (Fancy) Hubley. He faithfully attended Port Maitland Wesleyan Church. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed salmon fishing. He worked for Nova Scotia Light and Power as a linesman until his retirement in the early seventies. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, the former Lavina H. Whitehouse, Yarmouth; daughter, Joan (Jim) Bragdon, Delaware, U.S.A.; sons, Dale (Heather), Yarmouth; Bruce (Janice), London, Ont.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Elroy and Herbert; sister, Lillian; sons, David and Ansel. Donations may be made to the Port Maitland Wesleyan Church or a charity of your choice. Visitation was held Saturday, Nov. 4 from 7-9 p.m. and funeral Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m., both in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, Rev. Dale Robertson officiated. October 29 to November 4, 2006 RILEY, -Earnest Harry “Ernie�, age 77, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away very peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at his home in New Minas. Born on April 9, 1929, in Wentworth Creek, Hants County, he was a son of Florence (Baxter) Riley, and the late William Riley. Ernie was a miner, starting his career at a young age with the Fundy Gypsum Company, Wentworth; then working for the Iron Ore Company, Schefferville, Quebec; Sherritt Gordon Mines, Leaf Rapids, Manitoba; and finally retiring in April 1994, from Minalta Coal, Hinton, Alberta. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Sara Brown Cochrane; sons, Wendell (Liz), Winnipeg, Manitoba; Darryl, Edmonton, Alberta; granddaughters, Terri-Lynn (Derek) and Kimberly; great-grandson, Daniel Dowan; mother, Florence Riley, Wentworth Creek; sisters, Shirley MacMahon, Dartmouth; Marilyn (Blaine) Newcombe, Windsor; and “Sophie� his cat; sisters-in-law, Roberta Lawrence, Mount Denson; Reba Humelston, Newport Station; Charlene (Buster) MacIntosh, Yarmouth; Vivienne Riley, Wentworth Creek; brother-in-law, Barney (Shirley) Cochrane, Abbotsford, British Columbia; several nieces and nephews. Besides his father, he was predeceased by a brother, Francis; nephew, Peter Riley; brothers-in-law, Malcolm MacMahon, William Lawrence, and Martin Humelston. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. There was no visitations by request. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2006, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Wayne Merrill officiated. Interment was in the Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Town Road, Falmouth, followed by a reception at the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. October 29 to November 4, 2006 Helen Evangeline “Vange� Murphy - 91, Windermere, Kings Co. passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2006, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton Co. she was a daughter of the late Edmund and Helen (Young) Forman. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Vange was an active member of several organizations including the St. Eudora Rebekah Lodge #43, Berwick, where she had received her 20 year jewel and served as flag bearer; the Central Kings Crusaders Seniors Group; Christ Anglican Church and the A.C.W., Berwick; the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch # 69, Ladies Auxiliary, Berwick; and the former Windermere Community Home and School Association. Surviving are a son, Rodney (Jean) Murphy, Berwick; daughter, Linda (Jim) Dobson, Pleasant River, Queens Co.; grandsons, Shannon (Sherry) and Michael Murphy; great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Jacob Murphy; sisters-in-law, Colombe Forman, Laval, Quebec; Frances Forman, Debert, Colchester Co. numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George Murphy; brothers, Winfield, Homer (Teresa), Paul Forman; sister, Yvonne (Arthur) Norman. Visitation for Mrs. Murphy was held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 2 in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick (902-538-9900), from where a Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Service was held 7 p.m. followed by a Rebekah Lodge Service at 7:30 p.m. that evening. Funeral service was held 2 p.m. Friday, November 3, in Christ Anglican Church, 238 Commercial St., Berwick. Rev. Charles Bull officiated. Burial was in the Berwick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Christ Anglican Church, Berwick or St. Eudora Rebekah Lodge #43, Berwick.
