Hypocrisy from the right wing
(Letter to the Annapolis County Spectator)
Dear Editor:
The recently ousted federal Liberal government was by all rational accounts the most Conservative extremist right wing government in Canadian history. While we at the receiving end of Mulroney - Wilson cuts to social programs, thought we were being ravaged by hard-hearted Tories, Chretien - Martin developed new lows in mean-spirited callousness.
As a result, social program costs were down-loaded to debt-laden provinces and municipalites who were themselves under the gun to make drastic cuts. As funds for programs dried up, the Norval Norquist mantra of "starving the beast" gained kudos from economists but was an unnecessary over-reaction to our Canadian reality.
It is with some astonishment then, that we are now expected to forget this only too recent history as John MacCallum, the Liberal finance critic chastises the current neo-con extremists for carrying out the same nonsense that his own government perfected.
Don't you just love the obvious hypocrisy from the right wingers? Not only do they defer to the wishes of the rich, they bring that same quality of richness to their mendacious rhetoric.
