Looking for ancestors pasts

Dear Mr. Wigglesworth:

My name is Paul Smith and I am the grandson of Thomas (Tommy) Tonks who was the golf pro at White Point (formerly Liverpool Golf & Country Club) from 1929 to 1947.

He was born in Ward End, Aston, Birmingtham on April 1, 1896. In 1914 he joined the Royal Navy and left the navy in 1921 with the rank of gunner's mate.

In July 1922, he emigrated to Canada and died August, 1947 in Liverpool, NS.

Thomas Tonks became a professional golfer (and I don't know how this came about). He first worked at the Little River Golf Club, Walkerville, Ont.; then a golf club in Moncton, NB, and finally Liverpool Golf and Country Club (White Point Beach Lodge) in Liverpool around 1929-30.

He was brought to Liverpool by the then president of Bowaters after the golf club had gone bankrupt in 1929. From what I know, he helped complete the design of the course.

He was married to Annie Lydia Tonks (nee Mowbray). My grandmother was born in India circa 1996 and at the start of WWI moved to Saltley, Aston, Birmingham. She was married around 1921-22.

While I have a wealth of information on my grandfather's ancestors, I have very little knowledge of his life in Canada. I am especially interested in his years in Liverpool.

He had two daughters, Dorothy Blanche Tonks and Joan Barbara Tonks (my mother). Dorothy married an Anglican priest, Russell Elliott, and my mother married a Ken Smith who served for a number of years in English police forces and subsequently the Canadian Forces as a military police officer.

Both my aunt and my mother are both deceased and along with my grandmother, they very rarely spoke, if ever spoke about my grandfather.

I understand that my grandfather was a well-known and respected golfer in the province and had founded the NS Professional Golfing Association.

I believe White Point may have some photos of my grandfather that had been on display at the Lodge and that there may have been a plaque in his memory at the golf club.

I was wondering if you could perhaps mention him in your column in hopes that there may still be some persons in the Liverpool area who might have some information on him.
