The need is there
From the Yarmouth Vanguard
We are coming close to that time of year when thoughts of others dominate the day.

Christmas, dare we say it, is just around the corner.

And with the Christmas season approaching there will be pleas made by organizations to have the public boost their causes. Being the giving season it makes sense that so many make such approaches. And it is the time of year when so many pitch in and help others.

This is also the time of year when the bulk of the local food bank’s food drives take place.

While based in Yarmouth, the food bank relies on people from a much wider area to stock the shelves at Christmas and throughout the year.

Every year we hear of food drives being conducted by community-minded organizations in Port Maitland, the Pubnicos, Clare and other neighbouring communities besides the town of Yarmouth itself.

The food bank relies on the generosity of the public when those various organizations come calling.

Every month several hundred people and families call upon the food bank to augment the food in their kitchen cupboards.

It takes a lot to feed that many people. It takes a lot of volunteers to keep the food bank up and running and it takes a lot of people giving to those who call upon them to keep the food bank shelves filled.

The demand is there every month, year after year.

That’s the sad reality for those behind the food bank and for those who have to make use of the service it has long provided.

Most of us do not know who shows up at the food bank. But, as we said, hundreds show up every month.

But we need not know who they are to give to the food bank.

In the true spirit of giving to help others, the food bank is there in need all year.

As we fast track to Christmas we hope among the deserving causes hoping for help the food bank will remain on your list.
