SURETTE, Anne Rose – 89, Lower Eel Brook, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2006 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born January 21, 1917 in South Belleville, Yarmouth Co., she was a daughter of the late Remi and Jean Louise (Blouin) LeBlanc. She worked as a homemaker, and she enjoyed quilting. She was a former volunteer with the Yarmouth Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and worked for the Hospital Hullabaloo for many years. She was also a former member of the Catholic Women’s League. Surviving are her children, Claire (Don) Thibeau, Lower Eel Brook, and a son, Roy (Dianne) Surette, Church Point, as well as 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Remi A. Surette; brothers, Jean and Jean, both in infancy, Henry, Arthur and Walter; sisters, Victoire, Georgine, Vitaline, Helene, Agnes and Sister Jean Louise. Visitation was held Wednesday from 7 to 9, with prayers at 8 PM, in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. Funeral mass was held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, October 12, 2006, from Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Father Crepin Khonde officiated. It was requested that there be family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Tri-County branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses or to Yarmouth-Argyle Homecare. The family wishes to thank the V. O. N., Yarmouth-Argyle Homecare and Dr. Roland Muise for the care and compassion they showed Anne Rose and her family during her illness. BRIDGEO, Ross Clyde – 72, Beaver River, Digby Co., passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born February 3, 1934, he was a son of the late Clyde Leslie and Ora Vivian (Webb) Bridgeo. He worked as a lobster fisherman, and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served on the frontlines. He was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 143, Port Maitland. Surviving are a son, Brian (Janice) Bridgeo, Lake George; daughters, Charlotte (Scott) Killam, Lake George; Vivian Bridgeo, Hebron; Gail (John) McCulligh, London, Ont.; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Bridgeo, Yarmouth; a sister, Betty (Roderick) Hanf, Forest Glen. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his twin brother, Roderick, along with another brother, Leslie. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service at a later date. TINKHAM, Wilfrid Neil "Wiff" - 89, Yarmouth. Born in Spring Haven, Yarmouth Co., August 15, 1917, he died peacefully on October 18, 2006. Wilfid was a lifetime resident of Yarmouth County, a son of Norman Tinkham II and Isabel Jeffery, and stepson of Eliza Robinson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce (Smith); brother, Don (Hope), Yarmouth; daughters, Mona, Beverley Sullivan (Paul), Marsha (Dan Walsh), Eleanor (James Parsons), all of Dartmouth; sons, Bruce (Diane), Halifax, Norman (Patricia), Vancouver; grandchildren, Jeffery, Barry, Jeremy, Leah, Jordan, Meaghan, Braden, Brenna, Natalie, Hannah, Max, Rylan, and Mikayla; great-grandchildren, Ariana, Kyle, and Ty; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Clara, Addie, Jessie, Vera; brothers, Ralph, George, and Bill. Wilfrid was proud to volunteer to serve Canada in the Second World War, and was posted overseas with the Signal Corps from 1940-44. He was a cook in the army and used his talent as a preparer of great meals, both at home and in the operation of his diner in Yarmouth in the 50s and 60s. He worked at the Royal Stores and Atlantic Wholesalers for the last 20 years of his working life. First and foremost, Wiff was a family man, outdoorsman and gentleman. He dedicated his life to his wife Joyce and his children. He also took an extraordinary amount of time making certain his sisters and brothers were visited and cared for as they aged together. He faithfully made hospital visits to family, old friends and acquaintances. He also valued highly the kindness and companionship of his neighbours. Wiff's devotion to the Yarmouth North United Baptist Church continued over the last 46 years, as a member of the congregation, a trustee, usher and volunteer for any required task. He loved reading history, studying politics, and enjoying all the Blue Jays' games. Until recently, he was an avid hunter, and continued to fish and tend his flower and vegetable garden until his passing. Visitation was held Friday, October 20 from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Main Street, Yarmouth. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 21, in Yarmouth North United Baptist Church, Rev. Bill Newell officiated. Donations to the Canadian Bible Society or a charity of choice. Lucille Ruby Burgess, 84, of Southwest Port Mouton, Queens County, passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, on Monday, October 16, 2006. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Lauretta (Gognon) Prisque. She was known for her sense of humor, boundless curiosity and her enthusiastic way she approached each day. She loved books, bingo, Jeopardy! and watching television. She’ll be sadly missed and remembered by her two sons, Andy (Esther), Philip (Susan); grandchildren: Marty, Van, Dawn and Brandon; great-grandchildren: Quenten, Colin and Abby. She will also be remembered by her loving sisters, Lou McIntyre and Mur Livingstone. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger. Lois M. Anthony, 84, of Charleston, Queens County, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 17, 2006, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Big Lots, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Arthurton K. and Lois (Joudrey) Hollingsworth. Lois was a life member of Charleston Baptist Church, Ladies Auxiliary Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool and Charleston Fire Department. She is survived by her daughters: Patricia (Murray) Haynes, Nancy (Ernest) Whynot, Deborah (Wayne) MacLeod, Sherrill (Dennis) Harrington; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters: Elva Hubbard and Mildred Joudrey. She was predeceased by her husband, Maxwell; daughter, Pauline; granddaughter, April; 18 brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. H. Otis Beck, 86, of Milton, Queens County, passed away peacefully at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool on Wednesday, October 18, 2006. Born in Lyon’s Brook, Pictou County, he was a son of the late William and Edith (Battist) Beck. Otis was a former employee with Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited, Brooklyn, retiring in 1982 as an oiler. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Parkdale Signal Corps in Pictou and New Glasgow. He was a member of Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion Liverpool, Zetland Lodge #9, A.F. & A.M. and Prince of Wales Lodge #29, A.F. & A.M. and as a Shriner with Philae Temple, Halifax. He was a member of Zion United Church, Liverpool and served as an elder for several years, and as chairman of the cemetery committee. He was a member of the Liverpool Curling Club, and a former member of I.O.O.F. He also volunteered with Boy Scouts of Canada. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Laurine Patterson; daughter, Leanne (Raye Eisnor) of Liverpool; son, Ken of Milton; granddaughters: Kelly (Andrew) Poziomka, Kimberly (Todd) McLeod and Shawna Beck; great-grandson, Spencer McLeod; brothers: Oswald (Lillian) of Hopewell and Alden (Esther) of Lyon’s Brook. He was predeceased by a sister, Elda Munro. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. George William "Bill" Ritchie - 80, of Kentville, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Wenford and Grace (Spears) Ritchie. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch, No. 6, Kentville, for over 42 years. He had been employed with Canada Post for 32 years, retiring as the Postal Clerk for the Kentville Post Office. He enjoyed collecting stamps, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, the former Frances (Grant) Carrie; a daughter, Connie (Alan) Young, Calgary; a son, Wayne (Lois) Ritchie, Halifax; a step-daughter, Kathryn (Bruce) MacLean, Ottawa; a step-son, Allan (Brenda) Carrie, Centreville; a step-brother, Eric (Joyce) Brown, New Minas; two grandchildren, Kristin (Sean) Boland and Bruce (Colleen) Young; five step-grandchildren, Alexander and Matthew MacLean, Christopher, Ryan and Jessica Carrie; two great grandchildren, Lauren and Melissa Boland. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. There was no visitation by family request. A Royal Canadian Legion Service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 19, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A funeral service followed by a reception was held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2006 in the United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, Kentville, The Reverend Doctor Randy Crozsman officiated. WEAGLE, Kenneth Gordon - 92, Hantsport, Hants Co., passed away Sunday, October 15, 2006, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Annapolis Royal, he was a son of the late George and Selma (Rice) Weagle. Ken was employed as a Foreman with Minas Basin Pulp & Power for 40 years. He was a member and Honorary Deacon of Hantsport Baptist Church. Ken is survived by his wife, the former Jean Hutchinson; son, Gordon (Doris), Ellershouse; grandchildren, Karen, Mark and Christina; five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters, Elsie Smith and Marjorie Keddy; brothers, Lloyd and Ivan. MAHAR, George Allison, age 76, of Centre Burlington, Hants County, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his family. Born on January 5, 1930, in Wolfville, Kings County, he was the son of the late George and Kathleen (Pineo) Mahar. George was a well known painter for over 30 years, and was still well in demand even after his retirement. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Pauline Mann; daughters, Kathleen, Lower Burlington; Paulette (Reg) Lyon, Poplar Grove; Pamela (Rodney) Manning, Poplar Grove; Valerie (Barry) McCulloch, Brooklyn; sons, Gregory (Lori), Centre Burlington; Robin, Centre Burlington; Randall (Donna), Bishopville; 15 grandchildren and 3 great–grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Houlton, Tillsonburg, ON; Cora Pineo, Wolfville; Marion Gee, Centreville; Lois Long, White Rock; brother, Carl, Quebec; several nieces and nephews.
