October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued EAST SIDE RAGGED ISLAND: Curtis Lionel Nickerson, 91, passed away in Roseway Hospital on Saturday, October 7, 2006. Born in Rockland he was a son of the late William and Amy (Hardy) Nickerson. Curtis was a Veteran having spent six years during World War II and two years in the Korean Conflict. He spent the remainder of his working life as a fisherman. He is survived by sisters, Violet Buchanan, West Green Harbour; Margaret Hupman, Surf Lodge Nursing Home, Lockeport; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Alice, Marie, Belle and Mildred; brothers, Manford, Francis, Douglas, Cecil. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Lockeport with Rev. Beverley Burlock officiating. Donations may be made to the IWK Hospital for Children.
October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued BOUDREAU, Jean Elie – 71, Lower Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2006, in the QE II Health Sciences Centre (Infirmary Site), Halifax, with his family at his side. Born April 22, 1935 in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late Clarence and Frances (LeBlanc) Boudreau. In his younger years, Jean served as an officer aboard oil freighters that traveled in the West Indies and South America. He then worked in the herring fishing industry, and worked as a lobster fishing captain until his retirement. Jean was a talented musician who could sing and play any stringed instrument. He and his wife loved camping and taking part in many bluegrass festivals. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Marcelle (Painchaud) Boudreau, as well as a daughter, Diane Tremblay, and her husband, Brian Whitehouse, along with their children, Christiane Whitehouse and Edward Whitehouse, all of Seabright. Also surviving is a sister, Ann Chant, Halifax; a nephew, Jimmy. Visitation was held Sunday from 7 to 9, and again on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. Funeral mass was held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, October 10, 2006, from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Crepin Khonde officiated. October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued SMITH, Ronald A. - 79, Milton Highlands, died peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 7, 2006. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; son, Richard (Margaret); grandchildren, Ronald, Sarah, and Kristen; great-grandson, Bryden, all of Wellington, Yarmouth Co.; brother, Bernard (Agnes), Yarmouth. He was predeceased by parents, Ernest and Tillie (Swayne) Smith; sisters, Ruth and Lillian; and brothers, Victor and Robert. Ronald lived most of his working life in Toronto, Ont., as a mechanic with his own service station and towing business, and upon retirement, moved back to Yarmouth. Most recently he enjoyed riding on his scooter at the mall, he also enjoyed going to Tim Horton's to meet everyone, especially his good friend, Helen. There was no visitation by request, and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date. October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued SMITH, Annabelle - 100, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth, passed away October 7, 2006. Born on February 25, 1906, in Wood's Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Lillian (Nickerson) Crowell. She was a homemaker for most of her life, except for a few years during the Second World War, when she worked as a kitchen helper at the Yarmouth Airport. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughters, Gloria (John) Hemlow, Dartmouth; Gertrude (Roland) Smith, St. Stephen, N.B.; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 13 great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd; sons, Ralph and Bernard, and several brothers and sisters. Donations may be made to Tidal View Manor. There was visitation from 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 10, until time of funeral at 2 p.m. in Ritchie Memorial Chapel, Yarmouth. Burial will take place in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery following the service. October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued FRENCH (Harnish), Brenda Joan - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing at home of Brenda Joan French, 62, Hebron, Yarmouth Co., on Wednesday, October 4, 2006. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Zenes and Florence (Goodall) Harnish. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Kelvin Vernon French; daughters, Belinda, Hebron, and Nancy (Jason) Garber, Halifax; son, Christopher, Hebron; brothers, David (Dorothy), Raymond (Shirley), Harry (Ruth), Randy (Jane), George (Sheila), Donnie (Theresa), Danny; sisters, Nancy (Jim) Gilday, Barbara (Clarence), Marie (Ed) Russell, June, Pearl; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Albert and Jasper, and sisters, Iris and Marg. In her youth she worked at Herring Cove Bakery. For the last 37 years she worked along side her husband as a motel owner and operator at Eaton's Cottages and Motel in Hebron. Cremation has taken place at Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Memorial service was held Tuesday, October 10, at 2 p.m. in St. James Anglican Church in Herring Cove, Rev. Allen Frye officiated. Burial service to follow. A reception followed in the church hall. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Renal Dialysis Unit at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued McKAY, Bernard Primrose - 88, Yarmouth, passed away October 5, 2006, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on March 29, 1918, in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Bertram P. and Melda L. (Cornwall) McKay. He was a founding member of the Amateur Radio Club in Yarmouth, known as VE1LN. For many years he operated McKay's Radio and TV service and later became a teacher at the Burridge Vocational School, Yarmouth, where he taught electronics. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Surviving are his wife, Mildred (Stroud); daughters, Gail (John) MacDonald, Moncton, N.B.; and Shelley McKay, Yarmouth; sister, Maxine Crowell, Yarmouth; grandchildren, Kristen Dunsford, Summerside, P.E.I.; Michelle MacDonald, Moncton, N.B.; and Brett Chipchase, Yarmouth; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter, Susan Anne; and brothers, Scott and Gerald. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A memorial service was held Monday, October 9 at Sweeny's Funeral Chapel, Rev. A.D. Bill Newell officiated. Donations may be made to Yarmouth Regional Hospital Foundation.
October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued horton, Margaret Lillian – of Yarmouth and Halifax passed away on Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 in the Halifax Infirmary QEII. Born in Darling’s Lake, Yarmouth Co., she was a daughter of the late George and Mary (Rose) Blauvelt. She was a graduate of the Yarmouth Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and worked at that hospital for many years both in patient care and teaching. After her move to Halifax, she continued her nursing career for several years. Margaret was a member of Beacon United Church, Yarmouth. She leaves to mourn her son, Craig; sister, Barbara Blauvelt; nieces, Mary Gay and Susan Baxter; as well as many friends. Predeceased by her husband, Edward; and a sister, Ruby (Rev. Ray Salmon). A memorial service was held on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Halifax, Rev. John Boyd officiated. Burial in Yarmouth at a later date. Memorial donations to charity would be appreciated.
October 1 to October 7, 2006 continued Alaina Patricia Robar - Born on October 3, 2006, she was the infant daughter of Cory and Patricia (Fraser) Robar, passed away on November 8, 2006 in the I.W.K. Health Centre, Halifax, following a lifelong battle with illness. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Susan and Don Fraser, Kentville; her paternal grandparents, Karen and William Robar, Bear River East; paternal great-grandparents Beryl and Coleman Rice, and Doris Robar, all of Digby County; two aunts, Candace and Melissa Robar; two uncles, Greg Robar (Cindy) and Douglas Fraser; a cousin, Branden. A private family visitation was held in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2006 in the Clementsvale United Baptist Church, Reverend George Allen officiated. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the I.W.K. Health Centre, Halifax. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
