Call it some overdue paperwork.

Cecil Roy was a teenager when he joined the 133rd Field Battery in Liverpool in October 1947. He stayed with the unit until early 1949, when he opted to leave and head to sea on a merchant vessel.
He eventually returned to the military and served in the Korean War, after which he spent a few years in the regular Forces and a few years in the reserves before going back to sea.

He eventually came to Yarmouth, moving here from Halifax 18 years or so ago.

Through it all, he never received the official documentation regarding his discharge from the 133rd.

He decided to pursue the matter himself and so on Saturday, Nov. 11, following the Yarmouth area’s annual Remembrance Day service at the Mariners Centre, Roy will formally be presented with his discharge papers at the armouries.

Noting that the 133rd disbanded, Roy says the records from that unit were to be shipped to Yarmouth, home of the 84th Independent Field Battery.

“That was supposed to all come here, Roy said, adding that the material, presumably including his own file, “got lost in the shuffle.

He finally got word earlier this year that the matter was being addressed and he says it was only after taking the initiative himself that things started moving.

Asked to recall his decision to join the 133rd as a youth, he says many others were doing or had done the same and it seemed like it would be a good experience.

“It was the thing to do, he said. “It was just one of those things that everybody was doing.
