Edward Havey "Eddy" McCarthy - 64, of New Minas, passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, October 5, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Frances (Murphy) McCarthy. He had been employed with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, working at the Research Station, Kentville and later with the Agricultural College, Truro, from where he retired. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed football, baseball, golf and had a passion for horse racing. Ed was an active member of the Valley Billiards Club, where he enjoyed the friendship of all who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man and will be sadly missed by his wife, daughters, sister, brother-in-law and his many friends. He is survived by his wife, the former, Jane Vincent; two daughters, Laura (James) McCarthy-Ferguson, Brampton, Ontario and Kristine McCarthy, at home; a sister, Yvonne (Raymond) Halley, St. John’s, Newfoundland. There was no visitation by family request. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 9, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Father Craig Christenson officiated. Burial took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Heather Ann McCulley - 37 of Baxter’s Harbour passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 in Moncton’s Dr. George’s L. Dumont Hospital. Born in Kentville, she was the daughter of Gerald and Elizabeth (Gallant) Blenus. Heather lived in Baxter’s Harbour most of her married life. Heather was a member of the Kingsway Assembly Pentecostal Church in Kentville. She graduated from Central Kings Rural High School. Heather studied cosmetology at Kings Tech. In her spare time, she enjoyed working on her scrap booking, sewing and Frenchy’s shopping. Her family was her life and she was very dear to them all. She is survived by her loving husband, Dwayne, and four beloved children, Jenna, Joshua, Katie, and Gracie; sister Ronda Ward (Glenmont) and Laura Blenus (Saint John, N.B.). She was predeceased by her daughter Emily and sister Cheryl Blenus. There will be no visitation by the family’s request. Funeral service was held Saturday, October 7, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the H. C. Lindsay Funeral Home Chapel, 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville (902-678-2151). Reverend Aucoin officiated. Interment took place in the Canard Cemetery. Ronald Foster Meisner - 80, Cambridge Station, NS. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. Ron passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS on Monday October 2, 2006. Born in Kentville, he was the son of the late Frank and Pearl (West) Meisner. He was a veteran of the Second World War, and was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No 6, Kentville, NS. Following the war, Ron worked at the Kentville Experimental Station, the Kentville Sanatorium, Scotian Gold and also worked for many years for the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires. He enjoyed spending any spare time with his family and friends. Ron’s special hobby was hockey, and he had an extensive collection of hockey memorabilia and statistics on the NHL dating back to 1967. He also enjoyed playing cards, crib and darts, and had a special interest in country music. Ron is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Vivian (Brown) Meisner, son, Hughie Meisner, Cambridge; daughters Geraldine Gammon, Red Deer, Alberta; Dale (Neil) Johnson, Halifax; Barbara (Richard) Allen, Lumsden; Sherry (Stanley) Brown, Red Deer, Alberta; brothers, Reginald (Agnes), Dartmouth; Kenneth (Florence), Lower Sackville; sister, Eileen (Gerald) Foote, Cambridge; grandchildren, Christopher Jackson-Meisner, Stephen (Debbie) Gammon, Adam Gammon, Derek Johnson, Amy Allen, Robert Allen, Jonathan Meisner, and Jason Brown; great grandchildren Cody and Curtis Gammon, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ron was predeceased by an infant son, Garland, brothers Hughie and Jack, sister Helen, and nephews Timothy Meisner and Gary Ward. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ron’s life took place on Friday, October 6, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department, Kentville. Rev. Ulric Dawson officiated. There was also be a Royal Canadian Legion Service, Branch No 6, Kentville, prior to the Memorial Service at the same location. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Minnie Pearl Lohnes - 92, of New Minas, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2006 at home. Born in Bridgewater, she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Alice (Himmelman) Rafuse. She was a homemaker who loved spending time with her family. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Farris, New Minas; Barbara (Sherman) MacLean, Nictaux; a son, Claude (Barbara) Lohnes, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Watson; a son, Douglas; four sisters, Ruth Rafuse, Letty Brown, Daisy Dorsey and Vivian Powers; three brothers, Edgar, Lawrence and Clarence. There was no visitation by family request. A private family graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2006 in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County, Reverend Robert Billings officiated. Lucy Marion (Benedict) McKeigan - 73, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away Friday, October 6, 2006 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Woodside, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Charlotte (Jackson) Cox. She is survived by her husband, John McKeigan; four daughters, Linda (Owen) Keddy, White Rock; Colleen (Ron) Haight, Digby; Susan (Gary) Vidito, Kentville; Heather (Lewis) White, Clayton Park; a son, Bernard (Jane) Benedict, New Minas; five sisters, Dorothea Hiltz, Kingston; Ruth Bigelow, Steam Mill; Greta (Bradford) Benjamin, Arlington; Phyllis (Ephraium) Reade, Wolfville; Joyce (George) Parker, Scotts Bay; three brothers, Paul (Pauline) Cox, Port Williams; Victor (Joan) Cox, Glenmont Road; Kenneth (Sharon) Cox, Wilmot; sister-in-law, Edna Cox; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Garfield "Ted" Benedict; a daughter, Marion; two brothers, Robert "Bud" and Bernard. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, October 9, 2006 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2006 in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Kentville, Mr. Chris Plant officiated. Norman, Lloyd Richards – Passed away very suddenly in the VG Site, QEII, on Friday, October 6, 2006. Born on August 28, 1932, Lloyd was one of five surviving children of Augustus and Hannah Belle Norman of St. John‚s, N.L. At the age of 18 he left home to enlist in the RCMP in Regina, Sask., where he completed basic training. He spent all of his 27 year professional policing career in the communities of Liverpool, Windsor, Kentville, Bridgewater, Halifax, North Sydney, and Truro. During this time he became a qualified Chartered Accountant which led to his second career. After retiring as Staff Sergeant from the RCMP in 1977, Lloyd took on the role of office manager of Nova Scotia Textiles Ltd. After his second retirement he spent a great deal of time contributing to his community as a School Board member, a town councilor and he served on the boards of the V.O.N. and Dykeland Lodge. Lloyd enjoyed outdoor activities such as skiing, kayaking and riding his ATV. He was a proud member of Christ Church Anglican, and the Gyro and Rotary Clubs. He was a member of Ski Atlantic Seniors Club, as well as an active member of the RCMP Veterans' Association. Most recently he was part of a team of volunteer individuals installing Northwood InTouch Emergency Response units in the homes of people needing the service. In September of 1956 Lloyd and Kay Parsons were married in Windsor. Their son, Jeff, was born in Bridgewater and their daughter, Nancy, was born in Fredericton, N.B. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Augustus and Hannah Belle; two siblings in infancy; sisters, Phyllis and Daphne; brother, Reginald (all of Newfoundland); and he was also predeceased by his beloved wife and our loving mother, Kay, in April 2003. Lloyd is survived by sister, Geraldine (Jack Oates); brother, Dave, both of St. John‚s, N.L.; daughter, Nancy (Greg Morash), Avondale, Hants Co.; son, Jeff (Trina), Barrington, Shelburne Co.; and the two collective apples of his eye, his two wonderful grandsons, Kyle, Yarmouth; and Tristan, Halifax; also 21 nieces and nephews. Nancy, Greg, Jeff, Trina, Kyle and Tristan would also like to acknowledge their father and grandfather‚s very special friend, Julie Muir. We will all miss you forever and keep you near and dear in our collective hearts. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, October 10. Garland - Nettie McLellan 89 of Hantsport passed away peacefully Wednesday October 4, 2006 at the Hants Community Hospital Windsor with her loving family by her side.
Born in West Gore, Hants County she spent all of her married life in Windsor later residing in Hantsport for the past 33 years. Her heart really never left West Gore and she longed for another chance to return there and drink from the sweet spring in the woods, She was at heart "A Country Girl" Nettie was the daughter of the late William and Melvina (Prest ) Bruce. A quiet, modest lady that had a great love for her family and friends and also a love for animals and a special place for the ones that came into her life. She was a lifetime member of the UCW at St. James United Church, Hantsport and the Phelia Trinity United Church, Windsor. She would often be seen volunteering at many church functions Nettie had a strong and determined faith. Surviving daughters “Rae� (Donald) Miller, Hantsport ; Janice Garland, Hantsport; Susan (Dale) Leighton, Windsor ; Sons Ronald (June) Garland,Three Mile Plains; Bill (Ali ) Garland, Bedford Sister Mildred “Midge� (James) MacAskill, Kennetcook, Daughter in law Jean Garland; Beaverbank, five sister in laws, 13 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren and three Great Great Grandchildren Several nieces and nephews, and her cat “Bobby Boy.� Besides her parents, Nettie was predeceased by her husband Clarence Alfred Garland Son John “Jack� Garland, Brothers Lloyd, Doug, Philip “Ted� , Graham, Donald, Aubrey and Gerald and Blair in infancy. Sisters Leona Pratt, Jean Bruce and Nellie Ettinger Nettie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her and who’s lives she touched. A memorial service was held Saturday October 7, 2006 at St. James United Church, Hantsport. Rev. Glennis Smith officiated with burial in the Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. A reception followed the private family burial in the St. James United Church Hall, where family and friends united for a time of fellowship and refreshments. Allen - Mildred Mae – Interment service was held in Avondale (Newport Landing), Hants County on Saturday, October 7th, 2006 for Mildred Allen, daughter of Aubrey and Mildred Murphy. Mildred passed away on April 7th, 2006 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. She was the oldest girl of a family of eleven. At the time of her passing a memorial service was held at the Mountain View Funeral Home in Calgary. Mildred is sadly missed by family and friends.

Myrtle G. Silver, 98, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens Manor, Liverpool on Saturday, October 7, 2006. Born in Middleton, Annapolis County, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Edna B. (Crouse) Osborne. She was a member of Zion United Church, Liverpool, and a former member of the UCW. She was an active volunteer for Queens Manor for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Grace Lantz of Liverpool; grand-daughters: Mary Beth, Valerie and Vicki; great-grandchildren, Anderson and Brooke. Purney I. Burgess, 76, of Southwest Port Mouton, Queens County, passed away peacefully Friday, October 6, 2006 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Port Mouton, he was a son of the late Ruby L. (Burgess) Burgess. He was a truck driver all his working life and drove for various companies including C.W. MacLeod’s Fisheries, Nickerson Bros, Clearwater Fisheries and Canus Fisheries. He enjoyed a “yarn� with the local fishermen on the causeway and goose hunting. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, the former Shirley Roy; daughter, Rosalie Burgess-Croft (Michael Croft) of Western Head; son, Christopher (Jean) of Bush Island. He was predeceased by an infant son, Loran; grandson, Ryan. A private family graveside service to be held at a later date in Southwest Port Mouton Community Cemetery; Rev. Neil MacDonald officiating.
