Horton defends provincial golf titles
The Horton senior boys’ and girls’ golf teams defended their NSSAF Golf Championships Monday, Oct. 2 in Cheticamp in what one observer described as a hurricane.

On a day where winds gusted to 70 kilometers an hour, the Griffins proved that their championship win at Ken-Wo last year was no fluke.

In girls’ action, the Horton squad was led by Lindsay Harris with a 90 and Jane Snyder with a 93 to give them an eight-stroke margin over Eastern Shore High School.

Her score placed Harris one stroke behind Chantell Ervanowitz of Eastern Shore, who fired an 89 to claim the individual crown. Horton’s Snyder was third overall.

In boys’ action, only 10 boys in a field of 64 were able to break 85 on the par 72 course.

Sam Mills-Holland was low man for the Griffins with an 82, followed by James Mills-Holland at 86, Daniel Kenny at 87 and John Sogorka at 90.

The team finished with a 345 total, edging out regional rival Liverpool High by two strokes. Four teams tied for third at 355.

The low score of the day was a 77 by Steve Corkum of Richmond Academy, garnering him first overall in the individual competition. Horton’s Sam Mills-Holland placed fourth.

Gratifying win

“It was a very gratifying win for the Horton teams, Horton coach Peter Selig said after the competition.

“Teams were out to take our title after our decisive wins last year at Ken-Wo, he said. “The kids responded very well in conditions where the wind bent the flag sticks on many greens to almost a 45-degree angle.

“I was especially pleased with how the players fought for every stroke for the team rather than be concerned about individual achievements, as our ultimate goal was the team championship.

The previous week in Greenwood, the Griffins had won Western Regional crowns in the boys’ and girls’ divisions to advance to provincials.

In girls’ play, Harris (87) and Snyder (98) combined for an easy win over Bridgetown Regional High.

Sam Mills-Holland led the way for the boys’ team with an 81, followed closely by John Sogorka with an 83. James Mills-Holland chipped in an 86 and Daniel Kenny rounded out the scoring with an 89 to give Horton a five-stroke victory over Liverpool. Bridgewater placed third overall and NKEC placed fourth.
