Fuelers clawed twice by Lions
Valley Fuelers goalie Chris Hersey played an outstanding game Sunday, stopping 52 of 57 shots in a 5-1 loss to the visiting Clare Lions.
The Lions’ win was the second in two weekend games between the Junior C clubs. On Saturday at the Université Sainte-Anne Arena in Church Point, the Lions popped in six third-period goals past a tiring Fuelers team to win 9-2.
The Fuelers had played a strong game to that point, trailing 3-2 after two periods.
Playing on home ice Sunday in the Digby Area Arena, the Fuelers managed just 18 shots on Lions goalie Colin LeBlanc, although in some respects the two teams the numbers don’t tell the whole story.
Both teams played an even second period, each scoring once. Good defense and exceptional goaltending by Hersey kept Clare from scoring during a two-minute stretch when the Fuelers had two players in the penalty box.
Penalties played a significant part in Sunday’s game. Each team was assessed eight penalties, with the Fuelers being hit five times in the middle period. The Fuelers managed to kill off the penalties and Kyle Nichols took advantage of a short-handed Clare squad to score. Assists went to Eric Cook and Colan Cromwell.
Clare’s Marc Lombard fired a pair, and Mario Blinn, Marc MacIntosh and Jacques Lombard each added singles in the victory. Colin Leblanc got the win in goal.
In Saturday’s away game, the Fuelers were outshot 38-20, with Tyler Robertson and Tristan Reede scoring for the Digby-based team.
Clare’s Jacques Lombard led the Lions with a hat trick, while Marc MacIntosh added two, and singles came from Marc Lombard, Mario Blinn, Daniel Arsenault and Marc André d'Entremont, all with singles.
Grant Gaudet got the win in nets, while Adam Gorman took the loss.
The Fuelers play again Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Barrington Ice Dogs.
