With Nova Scotia Music Week rolling into town this weekend there’s going to be plenty to keep area music fans busy. You can now add no cases to the list of things you might want to check out.

No cases are a tradition at any music event. They allow bands that might not have made the show case roster of the main event or bands that are in town anyway, to have another venue to play. As a rule of thumb, the shows are free and they are all ages.

Such is the case with the no cases in Yarmouth, which will take place at the Yarmouth Golf and Country Club.

Yarmouth native Trevor Murphy, whose band Sleepless Nights will play during the Music Week showcases as well as at the no cases, is organizing the event. Staging the shows isn’t about trying to steal the thunder of the main attraction, he said, but rather giving more people a chance to play.

“Not everybody gets a chance to play, not everybody gets a chance to be involved,” he said. “These sort of things are just ways to get more people involved and have them be excited about participating in something,” he said.

The shows, which run on Friday from 7-10 p.m., Saturday from 5-10 p.m. and Sunday from 3-6 p.m., will feature a good mix of local high school bands and other bands from the Yarmouth area as well as bands from Halifax that are coming for Music Week or specifically to play the no cases.

Confirmed groups include Black Moor, The Establishment, Broken Ohms, Share, Rain Over St. Ambrose, Common Ground, Knives vs. Nerves, Luckless, The Olympics and The Light Brights.

Murphy said the shows with feature 30-minute sets by the bands with 15-minute solo sets in between each band. That means the music will keep playing as one band tears down and the next is setting up.

Although the shows are free, there will be a donation jar set up to help bands from Halifax cover gas expenses and there is also sure to be plenty of merchandise available for sale.

“We wanted to make sure that we did shows that were 100 per cent all ages but were also 100 per cent free,” said Murphy. “We just want to have as many kids come out as possible. It’s all about involving the community as much as we can.”
