Weymouth fundraiser’s a buzz for the United Way

All commission branches in Nova Scotia were involved in a fundraising campaign for the United Way, and Main issued a challenge to her fellow employees and the community that if they raised $1,000 or more she would have her head shaved.

Store manager and event organizer Janet Berry said they raffled off a basket of goodies at a dollar a ticket and when the campaign ended their store had raised $1,296, enough for a buzz cut.

“I was overwhelmed by the community support for this fundraiser,” Berry said. “United Way is a local supporter of Juniper House Outreach, Conway Workshop and Maison Jerome Group Home in Digby County and people know how important these are in our communities.”

On hand for Main’s buzz cut was NSLC manager of community Jennifer Fitzgerald, who said the Weymouth branch was the top store in percentage of sales in the province.

“We raised $39,000 for United Way with this event and Weymouth was highest in percentage of sales,” Fitzgerald said. “This is amazing for a small store.”

The United Way helps thousands of families and individuals of all ages throughout Nova Scotia by funding local not-for-profit organizations and charities.

Main said she issued the challenge because she believes that the United Way is so important in this area.

“We are an all-female employee store and every one of us has children,” said Main. “Because of this, we decided collectively to support Juniper House in Digby this year.”

Funds raised for the United Way benefit our families, friends, neighbors and communities and the money we raise stays in the community to fund programs like Juniper House, she said.
