Region of Queens Council Notes
Summer Church
Region of Queens Municipal Council approved a motion at its regular, monthly meeting June 15 to allow the Salvation Army to hold open-air church services in the lower parking lot by Home Hardware. The services will take place Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. from July 12 to Aug. 2, and on Sept. 6 and Sept. 13.
Summer Church Pt. 2
Council agreed to allow the Highway Pentecostal Assembly hold open-air church services in the lower parking lot by Home Hardware. These services will take place from Aug. 9 to Sept. 13.
Heritage lighthouse
The Region of Queens is one step closer to approving the Port Medway Lighthouse as a heritage property. Council will hear comments or concerns from the owners about the registration process on July 20 at 8:55 a.m. in council chambers.
Power line loan
Council approved a Temporary Borrowing Resolution in the amount of $280,000 to bury the power lines under Queens Place Drive for streetlights and future businesses to use.
Soccer grant
Council approved a $500 Community Recreation Assistance Program grant to the Liverpool FC Men’s B Soccer Team to assist in establishing their team.
Kebapskitk grant
A $500 Community Recreation Assistance Program grant is also going to Acadia First Nation to help with costs for the Kebapskitk Gathering, which took place on June 21.
Track grant
Council approved a Sports Travel Grant totaling $550 for Chelsea Whalen. This will help with costs to compete in the National Junior Track and Field Competition in Charlottetown, the Legion National Track and Field competition in Quebec and the Canada Summer Games in Charlottetown.
Canada Day grant
The Milton Community Association is receiving a $500 grant to cover the costs of Canada Day celebrations. The funds will come from the Grants to Organizations account.
RDA boost
Council approved an increase of $776 for the Region of Queens Municipality’s share of the Lunenburg/Queens Regional Development Agency’s budget for the current fiscal year.
Guides Association Grant
Council approved a $500 grant to the Nova Scotia Guides Association to cover the costs of having a live presentation on the History of Guiding as part of its 100th anniversary festivities. This funding comes from the Grants to Organizations account.
Congratulation letters
Council will send a letter of congratulations to NDP leader Darrell Dexter and Queens MLA Vicki Conrad, to congratulate them on their June 9 provincial election.
Motorcycle Show and Shine
Council approved a motion to allow the Privateer Days Commission to barricade most of the Waterfront Parking lot on Sat. July 4 to hold a Motorcycle Show and Shine. This will take place from 1-3 p.m., after the parade.
