Culinary students ready to go for the gold
A winning team of culinary students from Nova Scotia Community College’s (NSCC) Kingstec Campus continues to sharpen its kitchen skills in preparation for the 2009 Atlantic Culinary Competition in St. John’s Newfoundland in March.
Kingstec campus team members Erika Reeves, Kira Williams, Brian Rideout, Sean Polley, Kaylee Campbell and Peter Dewar (Manager) won the right to travel to this year’s competition after earning a Gold Medal and taking the Grand Prix at the Nova Scotia Junior Hot Salon Competition, held earlier this month at NSCC’s Akerley Campus in Dartmouth.
“The competition doesn’t get much better than at Junior Hot Salon,” says Chef Instructor Peter Dewar. “I know if this team can be successful at that level, we have a really good chance of taking gold at the Atlantic competition as well.”
This is the second year in a row that the Kingstec campus team earned both the highest score and the prestigious Sobey’s Passion for Food award, which recognizes teamwork, creativity and passion for the culinary arts.
Next month’s Atlantic Culinary Competition will see the Kingstec team go for their second consecutive gold medal at that level. They will compete against junior teams from Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.
To support their trip, students will be holding a fundraising dinner Saturday, March 7 at the Kingstec campus dining room. The six-course meal will feature local ingredients, including Macintosh apples, Russet potatoes, pork loin, yellow tail flounder and mussels.
These ingredients are all from the list of “black box” ingredients students will use to create their menu for the Atlantic Culinary Competition in Newfoundland. The dinner will include wine from Domaine de Grand Pre paired with each course. Limited seating is still available.
