Congratulations to Ami McKay, who was named to the 2008 Chronicle-Herald Honour Roll.
The tribute recognized talented people who took giant steps forward in 2008. The best-selling novelist saw her first play produced at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, the Two Planks and a Passion’s production of Jerome: A Historical Spectacle, that earned glowing reviews to sold-out crowds.
Her award-winning bestselling novel The Birth House will see a second for sure with her new novel in the works, The Virgin Cure, that is a hopeful for 2009, McKay says.
Glooscap Elementary School: bookmobile arrives at the school on the 15th from 10:15-11:45; an assembly will be held Jan. 16 at 8:15 and an early dismissal at 11:05; and a home and school meeting at 6:45 on the 26th with guest Frankie Bent from Child and Youth services, who will speak about childhood anxieties; and an assembly will be held at 8:15 on the 30th.
The Glooscap subject/science fair will be held Feb. 25, where students may submit non-competitive projects from any subject such as art, social studies or language arts. Students can also submit projects to be entered for judging in the Regional Science fair in Middleton April 14-17.
Northeast Kings Education Centre: there will be a high school dance from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Jan. 22 and middle school student-led conferences from 6:30-8 p.m. Jan. 29.
Student services encourage all students to see what scholarships/bursaries are currently available to them. The Toyota Earth Day scholarship deadline is Jan. 31; Terry Fox Humanitarian award program and Kin Canada bursaries program deadline Feb. 1; and the RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills scholarship deadline May 8.
Canning Library book club will meet Thursday, Jan. 15 from 7:30-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. There is no cost to join.

Library winter hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-5 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Canning and area food bank is open Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. Contact Harry Currie at 582-3886 to drop off donations during the mornings at 1000 Seminary St., Canning, or drop off items at various locations around town.
