SMITH, Freda Christine - 96, of South Brookfield, Queens County, passed away peacefully at home with her family on December 21, 2008. Born in South Brookfield she was the daughter of the late Roland and Mabel Irving. After graduating from Pictou Academy she received her registered nursing certificate from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. While in Montreal she enjoyed her involvement with medicine and participating in competitive ballroom dancing. After her struggle with tuberculosis she returned to South Brookfield where she married Dr. Harry Smith. She devoted her life to her family and attending to the needs of the elderly. She worked at the Queens General Hospital and later was the administrator of the North Queens Nursing Home. At the age of 60 she started her own boarding home in South Brookfield where she attended to the elderly, retiring at the age of 84. She loved her home and North Queens and was always concerned about the preservation of the area and its history. Freda is survived by her two loving sons Andrew (Vera Faye) of Hilden and Michael (Leona) of Masstown; grandchildren Duncan of South Brookfield, Darren of Las Vegas, Andrea of Halifax, Emily of Sambro Head; great-grandson Owen of Sambro Head; and sister-in-law Bobby Irving of Avonport. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Harry Smith; brothers Albert (Jean), Lawrence, and George and sister Anna Southerland. Special thanks to “her girls” with the Region of Queens Home Support and the VON whose help allowed her to live out her days in her own home. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home. A funeral service was held Wednesday, December 24, 2008 from South Brookfield United Baptist Church. Rev. Gillieo officiated. A private family burial took place in South Brookfield Cemetery. Donations may be made to Victorian Order of Nurses (Queens County) or North Queens Health Center Association.

Muriel Ruth Turner – 76, of New Minas, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2008 at home. Born in Wolfville, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Eileen (Tupper) Gates. She is survived by two daughters, Wendy Turner, New Minas; Cindy (Rick) Ferguson, Halifax; three sons, Chris (RoseAnn), Kentville; Kim (Dawn), Halifax; Terry (Michelle), Tantallon; former daughter-in-law, Janice Turner, Halifax; a sister, Joanne (Berlyn) Wile, Gaspereau; fourteen grandchildren, Craig, Jesse, Jordan, Jeff (Tanya), Allie, Amberlea, Carissa, Kaylene, Jayden, Shelby, Thomas, Pat, Nina and Gabrielle; six great grandchildren, Jayden, Sam, Amelia, Isabella, Sophia and Jayse; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Alden; a sister, June; two brothers, George and John. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation, by family request. MUISE, Joseph Carl – 73, Sluice Point, Yarmouth Co., died on Monday, December 22, 2008, at home. Born May 2, 1935 in Hubbard’s Point, he was the youngest son of the late George Enos Muise and the late A. Francoise (Deveau) Muise. Carl moved to Toronto, and then to Massachusetts. He was employed for 40 years, most recently, at Wang Labs in Lowell, Mass., from which he retired in 1991 as an HVAC mechanic, and then moved to Sluice Point. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he was a Boy Scout Assistant in Malden, Mass, and a member of Zion Baptist Church, Yarmouth. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary E. (Palmer) Muise; a son, Randal, Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Tammy, Arlington, Mass.; a brother, Donald (Irene), Sluice Point. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughters, Cathy and Carol Ann; a sister, Mary Daly; brothers, Joe and George; brothers-in-law, Bob Newbery and Joe Daly. Upon request, there was no visitation or funeral service, and cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2009 from H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Rev. Brian Wallace officiated. A reception followed at Huskilson’s Funeral Home. All friends and family were welcome. Committal of ashes will take place at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Ernest Leroy “Ernie” Farris – 86, of Kentville, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2008 at home, following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Waterville, Kings County, he was the son of the late Robie and Helen (Brown) Farris. He was a veteran of the Second World War and had been employed for many years with the Corps of Commissionaires at Camp Aldershot. He was a member of the Dukes of Kent and a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dr. C.B. Lumsden Branch No. 74, Wolfville. He is survived by four daughters, Carol Samson, Kentville; Linda (Bill) Stevens, Fox Brook, Pictou County; Valerie Farris (Don McNab), Port Williams; Theresa Parks, Centreville; one son, David (Susan), Coldbrook; one brother, Emerson, Trenton, Ontario; his friend, Rena Pearl, Kentville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and his faithful dog, T-Aki. Charles St. Clair “Charlie” Beach - 89, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away very suddenly at the home of his daughter in Coldbrook early in the morning of Monday, December 22, 2008. Born in South Alton, he was a son of the late Maurice and Laurie (Landry) Beach. The eldest of three sons, he was the last surviving member of the first family. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served as a gunner with the Canadian Army, serving overseas in England, France, Belgium and Holland. Early in life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and his beloved garden. He was an avid woodsman and could tell you a lot about trees, as he logged for some time. He is survived by his only daughter, Vallerie (Fred) Pede, Coldbrook; three sisters, Vera (Frank) Burns and Janie (Henry) White, Upper Kennetcook; Mabel (Raymond) Singer, Kennetcook; four sisters-in-law, Estelle, South Alton; Roberta, New Minas; Leona, Kennetcook; Janet Isaacs, England; three brothers, Walter, Odessa, Ontario; Henry (Millie), Upper Kennetcook; Clyde (Frances), Kennetcook; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Helen “Ellen” Isaacs; his son, Derek Charles; five brothers, Harry, Theodore, William, Stanley and Earl; a sister, Grace; brother-in-law, John; a sister-in-law, Vera. CONRAD, Nina Mae - 93, of North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia, passed away peacefully in North Queens Nursing Home, Wednesday, December 24, 2008. Born in Harmony Mills Queens County, she was the daughter of the late Bradford and Winnifred (Cushing) Freeman. Nina was a former school teacher in Lunenburg and Queens Counties. She is survived by her daughters Jean Fancy of Caledonia and Ruth (Alan) MacKinnon of Whycocomagh, Cape Breton; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sister Berna Douglas of Evergreen Home For Special Care, Kentville. She was predeceased by her husband Lorenzo Alexander; infant son Ivan Maynard; sister Elizabeth and brother Jack. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Frederick "Ted" Gordon Lloyd passed away late Christmas Eve in Grand View Manor, Berwick, following a lengthy illness. Born in Kentville on August 6, 1930, he was the only son of Barry Gordon and Elsie Isabel (Dennison) Lloyd. He attended Kentville school, played hockey for KCA, and was a member of the Kentville Wildcats. He was an avid outdoorsman from a young age, and made many trips to the Dennison family camp in Upper Lake Sixty. He took his four daughters there throughout their teens, and later enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with grandson, Jeremy Walsh and family friend John Peck as the boys grew into young men with families of their own. A snowmobiler for over 40 years, he belonged to the Annapolis Valley Lake & Ridge Runners and in later years enjoyed the Valley ATV Club. Mackerel fishing, poker runs, deer and rabbit hunting, baked bean suppers, camping, Port George jamborees, corn boils, turkey dinners, family barbecues, road trips, and helping in the fields or in the barn at the Calkin Century Farm in West Black Rock were a few of his various passions. He shared many adventures with his faithful beagles through the years - Zeke, Bugle, Sport, Prince, Queenie, Jackie, and Barnie to name a few. Ted served in the West Nova Scotia Regiment (Reserve Unit) at Camp Aldershot for a time in his younger years. He worked for Jordan's Dairy, Dominion Atlantic Railway, and then with British American Oil Company in Kentville, Hebbville & Burnside until 1960. He operated Ted's Texaco in Kentville for 14 years, along with a second Texaco station on West Park Street for several years. He drove his own bus for the former Kings Co. Vocational School at the same time, and later drove for Perry Rand Limited. For 34 years he owned Ted's Taxi in Kentville where he held long-term contracts with many local firms, education facilities, nursing homes, and service clubs. He worked most weekends and holidays for his regular customers, and was especially dedicated to transporting disabled children to school and recreational activities. Until the demise of the railway in the valley, he transported train crews daily for DAR from Kentville to Halifax and other rail centres in Nova Scotia - at all hours of the day and night and in all weather. He was a former member of the IOOF, Kentville, associate member of the Kentville Legion and Memory Club, and a former member and secretary-treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen Lodge. He belonged to the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1950's, refereed senior hockey games and was a member of Legion Darts and Bowling leagues where he won many trophies. Ted is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Ruth Olive Burgher, daughters, Sarah "Sally" Jean (Richard) Walsh, Beth Isobel, and Shirley Anne Ruth, all of Kentville and Mary Alice, Toronto; grandson, Jeremy Frederick (Jennifer) Walsh; granddaughter, Rachel Alexandra Lloyd (Smith); great– granddaughter, Kenadie Madeline Walsh, all of Kentville; step-grandchildren, Dwayne Walsh, Edmonton, Alberta; Deanna Walsh, Belleville, Ontario, and Michelle (Thomas) Hudak, New Glasgow; step-great-grandsons, Maxwell Chamberlain and Joseph Hudak; sisters, Judy (David) Rockwell, Lunenburg and Kay (Fred) Ward, Kentville; sister-in-law, Jean (Burgher) Calkin, West Black Rock; brothers-in-law, Ken Lyster, Alberta, and Bill (Gwen) Burgher, Ontario; and many nieces, nephews and longtime friends. He was predeceased by a son, David Gordon, in 1961 and sisters, Alice Lloyd and Margaret "Peggy" Lyster. There was no visitation. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Interment was held in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Stanley Rexford Webb - 89, of Aylesford, Kings Co., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday December 24, 2008. Born in Noel, Hants Co. he was the son of the late Arthur Haley and Lillian Isabel (Hamilton) Webb. Stan worked in the woods (driving horses) at an early age then became a member of the Canadian Armed Forces from Nov. 21, 1940 to Jan. 20, 1970. He was a veteran of both the Korean War and the Second World War. Stan also did two - one year tours as a Peace Keeper in Egypt. After retiring from the military he was employed as a commissionaire at C.F.B. Greenwood. Stan was very active in his community. He was a member of the Aylesford & District Lions Club and Kings County Veterans Club. He drove shuttle bus for Pharmasave, delivered Meals on Wheels, belonged to friendly neighbours and and helped out wherever needed. He loved to play cards, do jigsaw puzzles and puzzle books. Stan was a member of the Aylesford United Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather who will be sadly missed and forever remembered. He is survived by his son, Wallace (Sylvie) Webb, Quyon, Quebec; daughters, Janice (George) McNeil, Berwick; Dorothy (Murray) Legge, Centre, Lunenburg Co.; Jessie (Kenneth) Ettinger, Aylesford; grandchildren, Stanley, Sally, Brett and Alice; great-grandchildren Chrissy, Alex, Hope, Courtney and Kaitlyn; sister, Hazel Huntley, East Gore; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life his wife of 53 years, Marjory Alice, brothers, Leslie in infancy; Cecil, Freeman; sister, Bessie McCullough. No visitation at the request of the family. DAVIS, Richard Charles- 49, of Shelburne, passed away at home at 9 Harbourview Lane, Shelburne, on December 24, 2008. Born in Shelburne he was a son of the late John and Marjorie (Hemeon) Davis. Richard was a kind and loving person. He loved his nieces and nephews and was friendly with everyone. He is survived by sister, Dorothy (James Enslow) Davis and their children, Sharon and Bernard Enslow; brother, Gerald Davis and his children, John and Julie Davis; several great-nieces and great-nephews as well as cousins. YOUNG, Malcolm Eugene ”Mack”-74, of Shelburne, passed away on December 24, 2008 in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point, Shelburne County. Born in Shelburne on March 26, 1934, he was a son of the late Isaac and Ethel (Urquhart) Young. Mack worked at a number of small jobs over the years, his latest employment having been at various fish plants, until he became disabled. Mack was a well-known person in the Town, mainly from his walks around town, which he really enjoyed, and his friendly way with everyone. He attended Shelburne Baseball and helped out with the teams. He is survived by sisters, Joan Foote, Shelburne; Ruth (Willis) Bennett, Pennsylvania, USA; Geraldine Johnston, Truro; several nieces and nephews. Mack was predeceased by both parents, and brother in-law, Fred Foote. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home. No visitation by request. LEWIS, Joyce Helen - 63, North Ohio Road, Yarmouth Co., died December 25, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on October 22, 1945, the daughter of the late Gerald A. and Bertha (Johns) Cann, Joyce was an avid gardener. She is survived by daughter, Lisa Lewis, Grande Cache, Alta.; son, Scott (Carla), Yarmouth; brothers, Robert (Cecille) Cann, North Ohio Road, Yarmouth Co.; Garnet (Anne Marie) Cann, Yarmouth; sister, Wendy (Russell) Deveau, North Ohio Road, Yarmouth Co.; granddaughter, Hannah Lynn. MacKenzie, Kevin Eugene-53, of Smithers, B.C., formerly of Lockeport, passed away in Lockeport December 26, 2008. Born in Sandy Point, he was a son of Dorothy(Cranton) and the late Basil MacKenzie. He was primarily brought up by his grandparents, the late Alexia and Maurice Townsend. In later years he moved out to Smithers, B.C., and worked in the mines in Northern British Columbia. He enjoyed spending his vacations in Lockeport with his family and was looking forward to retiring at “home” in Lockeport. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy; brothers, David, Ont.; Shaw, N.B.; sisters, Estella (Roland) Stuart, Lockeport;Wendy (David) Granger, N.B.; Sharon, Barrington, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Maurice and James. The body has been cremated under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. There will be no memorial service by request.
