WILCOX, Mary Elizabeth - 101, died at home in Hants Border Tuesday, December 9, 2008. Mary was born in Milford, Michigan, September 30, 1907. She is survived by daughters, Arlene McKenzie, Mt. Uniacke; Doris (Norman) Matheson, Hantsport; sons, Ralph (Doris) Wilcox, Hamilton; Warren (Lorna) Wilcox, Winnipeg; grandchildren, William Wilcox, Whitehorse; Robert McKenzie, East Uniacke; Jeffrey Benedict, Lockhartville; Ronald McKenzie, Waverley; Beverly Grant, Winnipeg; Laura Davidson, Gaspereau; Kimberly Pearson, Stoney Creek, Ont.; Sheri Fazio, Dundas, Ont.; Rodney Wilcox, Winnipeg; Sharalynn Matheson, Hantsport; Bonnie Wilcox, Winnipeg; Warren Wilcox Jr., Winnipeg; 12 great-grandchildren, several great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer; daughter, Rosemary Benedict (Lockhartville); brothers, Lawrence, Richard, Allen and George. Mary was a past Noble Grand at the Rebekah Lodge and was a member for many years. Mary’s hobbies were both flower and vegetable gardening. She did a lot of preserving and was great at giving most of it away. She enjoyed knitting mittens for all the children she knew and for several years has given a hundred plus mittens each year to the Kings County Family and Children’s Services. She crocheted all her life and had several special pieces. She liked to give all her friends a doily and small crocheted Christmas ornaments. Mary liked playing cards and having company for dinner. She enjoyed having parties and everybody there had to win a prize. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, December 12. Funeral service was held 3 p.m. Saturday, December 13, in the Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. R. Lindsay Rankin officiated. Interment followed in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Adams, Audrey Maxine – 79, of Aldershot, Kings County, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in New Ross, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Ida (Redden) Leopold. She had been employed with Hostess Foods (Frito-Lay) for over 29 years. She loved life and especially enjoyed her daily walks with neighbours and friends. On November 24, 2008, she was baptized and proud to become a member of Bethany Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Garnet; a daughter, Cindy Lou (Lloyd) Cogswell, Baxter’s Harbour; a son, Terry (Pamela), Yarmouth; two sisters, Ida (Cecil) Swinamer, Western Shore; Geraldine Dempsey, Morden; a half-brother, Fred (Carolyn), Parrsboro; three grandchildren, Troy (Kim), Trena and Jamie; three great grandchildren, Hayden, Connor and Samuel, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a half-brother, Jimmy. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by family request. THORBURNE, Mary Genevieve, 80, Shelburne, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, December 8 with her family by her side. Born in Woodstock, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Molly (Curtis) Caldwell. Mary moved to Shelburne in her teens and was employed at the Roseway Hospital as a nurse for over thirty years. She loved to knit and do crossword puzzles. She loved dancing and listening to old time music in her good years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed helping those in need. She is survived by sons, Pat (Joan), Shelburne; Tom (Annette), Oromocto, N.B.; Rick, Barrington; Lynes (Heather), Barrington Passage; daughter, Deanna (Paul) Barlow, Ottawa; brother, Robert Caldwell, Scarborough, Ontario; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son, Mark; daughter, Mary; brothers, Charles and Lynes Caldwell; grandson, Troy; great-grandson, Aaron. WALLACE, Darlene Coreen, R. N., Wolfville / Kingsport passed away December 9, 2008, at home overlooking her beach and landscaping. Born on a beautiful July day in 1942, Darlene was the daughter of Murray and Marguerite (Weatherbee) MacIntosh of Tatamagouche. Darlene’s dreams and plans were waylaid by melanoma, and while her time was shorter than hoped she touched many along the way, always available to lend a helping hand or ear. Darlene was a graduate of the V G Hospital 63B class, and like all things she undertook to do she was an excellent nurse, having worked at the VG, Kentville and Wolfville hospitals. She was an excellent mother and strived to do the best in her pastime activities of gardening, sewing, knitting and bridge, constantly striving to learn more. With the closure of the Wolfville hospital, Darlene became a partner with her good friends Mary and Heather to create the Weave Shed Gift shop, which proved to be a successful venture. Darlene’s true love was gardening, filling the house with seedlings and nurturing them until they blossomed into flowers or fruit. Darlene could remember all the names of various flowers and shrubs and knew how to place them for the most effect in the garden. Darlene is survived by husband Perry, Kingsport; Daughter Janine, Halifax, Sons Michael and Ronald ( Joanne), Halifax; Sister Kathy (Ron) Blowatt, Winnipeg; brother Ronald (Judy), Sackville, Sister Glenda (Perry) Swan, Tatamagouche, Special Aunt Barbara Day, Vancouver; and the pride of her life, grandson, Jack Edward Wallace. Darlene was predeceased by her Mother Marguerite, Father Murray, and Stepmother Nola. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held at the Old Orchard Inn , Wolfville on December 14, at 3:00 PM for those wishing to pay their respects. Family flowers only by request. Rodgers, John Albert – 70, of Aldershot, Kings County, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Arthur and Lena (Lake) Rogers. He had been employed as Night Watchman at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium and later owned and operated Harrison’s Taxi for many years. He also worked with Graves in Kentville and most recently Great Valley Juices. He enjoyed baseball and in his younger years played for Olands Exports in Meadowview. He also enjoyed fishing with friends and his nephew. He and his late wife, Vera, were former members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville, where they played darts and enjoyed bowling. He is survived by a daughter, Tammie (Mike) Swindells, Kentville; a son, Fred, New Minas; four grandchildren, Corie Corkum, Jackie Rogers, Keely Bent and Nicholas Bent-Rogers; several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Vera; an infant daughter, Lena; three sisters, Stella, Jacqueline and Helen; four brothers, Arthur “Bub”, Douglas “Doug”, Donald “Don” and Frederick “Fred”; his twin brother, James “Jim”. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2008, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating.

COOK, Lawrence Milford - 88, Nictaux Falls, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2008 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital Veterans Unit. Born in Bloomington, NS, he was a son of the late Ernest W. and Georgia Etta (Vidito) Cook. Lawrence served with the Canadian Army during the Second World War and a highlight of his military career was serving at United Nations Headquarters, Gaza, Egypt. He was employed with Canadian Canners Ltd. Middleton and with the Department of Highways in Middleton until retirement. He was a member of the Nictaux Fire Department and served as treasurer for twenty years. He and his late wife Rena sponsored children through World Vision. He is survived by daughters, Patsy (Brian) Adams, Nictaux Falls; Shelley Munroe (Tim Lewis), Port Lorne; grandchildren, Jennifer and Kristina, Nictaux Falls. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rena M. Munroe. Visitation was held Thursday, December 11, 2008 in the Middleton Funeral Home. PEPPERDENE (Weare), Tanya Dawn - 41, Ellershouse, Hants Co., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Wednesday, December 10, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Doris (Collings) Weare. Tanya grew up in Dartmouth, where she met the love of her life, Dave Pepperdene. Together they had three beautiful children. Tanya is survived by husband, Dave Pepperdene; children, Brittany (19) (Mike LeGoffic), Chelsey (16), and Danielle (12), all of Ellershouse; siblings, Donna (Ken) Walsh, Dartmouth; Cindy (Mike) Bull, Victoria, B.C.; Cordell (Colette) Weare, Dartmouth; many nieces, nephews and cousins. COTTREAU, John Lawrence Sr. - 82, Yarmouth, passed away on December 10, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on June 4, 1926, he was a son of the late Louis Cottreau and Louise (Muise) Cottreau. Lawrence was a winchman for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and the Toronto Blue Jays. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Margaret (Boudreau) Cottreau; daughter, Laura May (Shaun) Pitman; sons, John Lawrence Cottreau Jr., Timothy Martin (April) Cottreau; David Wayne (Lynn) Cottreau; grandchildren, Chelsea Cottreau, Cody Cottreau, Samuel Pitman and Bailey Pitman. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by sisters, Madeline, Bernice, Genevieve, Rosy, Marion; brother, Martin. REDDING, Katheryn Gillies "Kay" - Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital, in her 102nd year. Kay, as she preferred, was born in Worcester, Mass., on January 29, 1907. However, her family roots were deep in Yarmouth and, after living and working in Winnipeg and Montreal, it was to Yarmouth she returned when she retired in the early 70's. She lived on Parade Street for many years, and then to Sunset Terrace for 12 years, and finally briefly to Gentle Care Seniors' Residence. She was a member of Zion United Baptist Church and was for many years, active in the Yarmouth County Museum. She never married, and was predeceased by brother, Alexander Stuart Redding and sister-in-law, Helen (Oxley) Redding. She is survived by nephews, Gordon S., Halifax and Michael E. of Vancouver and their families; great-nephews, Michael and Christopher of Toronto and Vancouver, respectively; great-nieces, Kimberly and Leigh, Montreal and Catherine of Dublin, Ireland, as well as their families; great great-nephews and great great-nieces. Kay loved Yarmouth, even though she was separated by distance from her relatives, she preferred life in that part of Nova Scotia where her roots and her ancestors lay. She also enjoyed being among her many friends in the area. Kay's family is immensely grateful to the people of Sunset Terrace who made up her "Yarmouth family" and who looked after her with such care and affection. Also many thanks are due to the staff of 3 East, Yarmouth Regional Hospital, and thanks as well to the folks at Gentle Care. To Dr. David Webster, more than thanks, our total gratitude. Earle Everett Bishop - 79, of New Minas, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Highbury, Kings County, he was a son of the late James and Addie (Walker) Bishop. In his earlier years, Earle worked in mines in Niagara Falls, Ontario and Bathurst, New Brunswick. He then moved back to Nova Scotia and worked in New Minas for a period of time with Turner’s Radiator Service and Milne’s Garage. He then owned and operated Earle Bishop’s Auto Body, retiring in 1984. Earle loved the outdoors, especially hunting and gardening, and enjoyed country music. He also loved spending time with family and in particular, his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Doris Glenn; three daughters, Wanda (Charles “Chuck”) Calder, Port Williams; Jeanette (Ken) Baker, Paradise, Newfoundland; Marlene (Gary) Maddison, New Minas; a sister, Freda Taylor, Halifax; a brother, Robert (Fern), Baxter’s Harbour, Kings County; a sister-in-law, Vivian Bishop, Cambridge; five grandchildren, Matthew and Brennan Maddison, Andrew and Sarah Calder and Colin Baker; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Frances; two brothers, Garnet and Donald and an infant brother, Gordon. William Walter “Bill” MacNeil - 66, of Kentville, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008 at home. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Cameron and Mary Frances (Rathburn) MacNeil. He was a graduate of Kings County Academy, Kentville. He had been owner and operator of MacNeil’s Red and White Grocery Store in Kentville and was also employed with the Department of Highways. Most recently, he owned and operated a boarding house in Kentville. He was interested in sports and especially enjoyed hockey and baseball. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, where he was active with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a former member of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his special friend, Gladys Johnson; five children, Wally (Cindy), Cameron (Lois), and Michael (Emily), all of Saline, Michigan; Kenneth, Sudbury, Ontario; Joanne (Brian) Head, Saint John, New Brunswick; three sisters, Rose Marie MacNeil, Kentville; Sally (Guy) Delorme, Orleans, Ontario; Cathy (Larry) Eaton, Kentville; 11 grandchildren, Todd, James, Katelyn Lee, Eric, Sean, Victoria, Shane, Lauren, Liam, Jody and Koby; nieces and nephews. Eva Darrel (Whynacht) Cameron - 96, of Kentville, formerly of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2008, at Grand View Manor, Berwick, Kings County. Eva was born in Blue Rocks, Lunenburg County, on November 3, 1912, and was predeceased by her parents, Ivy and Ceily Whynacht; brother, Frank; daughter, Jean Anne and husband, George. Eva will be dearly missed by her son, George “Sandy” Cameron, wife, Linda, Woodville; daughter, Mary Thomas, husband, Neil, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Shelley, Toronto; Ian (Cynthia), Kentville; Cynthia (Scott), Coldbrook; Allison and Nadine both of Dartmouth, and great-grandchildren, Jason, Leah and Kaylee. Eva graduated as a RN from Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. Following her graduation she did private duty nursing in Barrington Passage and always had a story to tell about her experiences of being a nurse. She gave up her career to stay at home and raise her children and became a foster parent to many babies and children throughout the years. Eva was a member of the United Church Women and the Woodlawn United Church, Dartmouth until she retired to Kentville with her husband, George. She became a volunteer with the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and later became their Historian. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by family request. WINFIELD, Margaret Rose, 77 of Woodlawn Drive Shelburne, passed away Monday, December 8, 2008 at Queens General Hospital Liverpool. Born in Shelburne, she was the daughter of the late George and Bertha (Williams) Buchanan. During Margaret’s working life, she worked in the kitchen at Roseway Hospital, St. Mary’s University, Rainbow Haven, and the VG Hospital. She also did house cleaning for families. She loved to attend church, enjoyed word find and jigsaw puzzles, loved to look at photos, enjoyed Christmas, family camping trips, and loved to bake. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She is survived by daughters Judy (Philip) Bradfield of Bridgewater, Darlene (Stephen) Rennehan of Shelburne, Ruth (Robert) Scott of Shelburne, and Jane (Lawrence) Brannen of Newellton, brother Adam of Barrington, sister Isabelle Acker of Birchtown. Grandchildren Alicia, Jordan, Ashley, and Richard. She was predeceased by her husband Stephen, brother Ralph, and sister Elmore. Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 12 from the H.M. Huskins, Vida Kohler (1919-2008) - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother on Tuesday, December 9, peacefully, at Idlewyld Nursing Home, with her daughter Judy by her side. A retired public school teacher, she taught in Nova Scotia and Hamilton, with a B.A. from McMaster University. A long time member of St. John’s Anglican Church, she loved the choir and piano. From a family of seven brothers and sisters, she is survived by her sister Beatrice Buchanan of Nova Scotia, her daughter Judy Maracle (Les), her sons Kohler (Edith) and Frank Huskins (Tracie) and her “Grandy” Astasia-Lynn. She will be missed dearly by her nieces and nephews, and their families in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Predeceased by brothers Archibald, Rodney, Cecil, George, and sisters Freida and Jida. The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Idlewyld Manor for their special care while Mother was there. MUISE, Martin Gerard - 73, passed away suddenly on December 11, 2008, at home in Sainte Anne du Ruisseau. Yarmouth Co. Born October 16, 1935, he was a son of the late Louis and Helene (LeBlanc) Muise. He was a member of Sainte Anne du Ruisseau Church. He is survived by his best friend and companion, Mary Irene McCallum, Sainte Anne du Ruisseau.; brother, Lawrence (Treva), Sainte Anne du Ruisseau, Yarmouth Co.; sister, Helen Muise, Sainte Anne du Ruisseau, Yarmouth Co.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Bernard, James, Edward and Clifford. Remains are resting in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Visiting hours took place in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel Sunday from 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m. Funeral Mass took place Monday, December 15 at 11 a.m. in Sainte Anne du Ruisseau Church, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Sainte Anne's Parish Cemetery. ROBERTS, Beulah Ernestine - Passed away in Nakile Home for Special Care on December 12, 2008, at 101 years of age. She was born in Glenwood, Yarmouth Co., on March 24, 1907, a daughter of the late Emerson and Augusta Roberts. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Beulah was predeceased by her first husband, Ryland Roberts; her second husband, Burton Roberts; daughter, Bessie; brother, Chesley Roberts; sister, Ardella Nickerson; stepdaughter, Helen Frost. She is survived by daughters, Iva Beauprie, London, Ont.; Roberta Swinimer, Glenwood; son, Myron Roberts, Amiraults Hill; stepdaughter, Hazel Nickerson, and stepgranddaughter, Betty Surette, both of Yarmouth; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; many great great-grandchildren. She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church from age 14 until it was torn down, and a long-standing member of the Glenwood Argyle Women's Institute. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, card games and attending the quilting bees held from home to home in years gone by, having made hundreds of quilts. She will be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens, which filled her entire yard. At age 97, she was still out digging in her gardens. She was a wonderful cook and so enjoyed cooking for family and friends. “Grammy's Molasses Cookies” will forever by remembered. At age 90, she was still cooking hundreds of clover leaf rolls at Christmas time for her children and grandchildren. Remains rested in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visiting hours took place Saturday, December 13 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held Sunday, December 14, in Argyle Pubnico Baptist Church at 2 p.m., Pastor Raymond Pitcher officiated. Interment followed in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Beulah may be made to Nakile Home for Special Care. WALKER, Marion Lillian, 82, of Shore Road, died Dec. 12, 2008, in Digby General Hospital. Funeral Dec. 15 in Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby. Burial in Rossway Baptist Church Cemetery.

THOMAS, Norman Hines – age 73, passed away suddenly at his home in Cogmagun, Hants County, December 10, 2008. Norman was born in Summerville, Hants County, and lived his entire life in Cogmagun, where he built his house and raised his family with his cherished wife of 51 years, Mary Helen (Power) Thomas. Norman left school at an early age to support his brothers and sisters. As an adult he supported his family as a laborer and then as a carpenter. In retirement he enjoyed the fruits of his labor by travelling across Canada and spending time with family and friends. Norm and Mary were often on the road with their good friends Fred and Betty Eggelton travelling to music jamborees and other social events. Norman was also caretaker of Sandyland Cemetery for many years, which he took great pride in keeping it in excellent condition. Norm loved hunting and he enjoyed one last hunting season back at “the camp” playing many games of cards with the boys but shooting no deer. Norman was well known for his quick wit, his sense of humor, and his many comical stories. He will be sadly missed by friends and family who take comfort in the knowledge that Norm left this life quickly and with dignity. He was predeceased by his parents, John Thomas and Mina Sanford; his beloved daughter, Krista Koreen Thomas. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Charles and John Adams, and his sisters, Gladys, Myrtle, Ada, Beatrice, Pauline, and Sharon and Shirley in infancy. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Deborah (Wayne) Burbidge; son, Bradley (Marlene) Thomas; devoted family friend, Patricia Westlake; grandchildren, Brodie (Nicole) Thomas, Sara Burbidge, Zachary Thomas, and Nicholas Burbidge. He is also survived by sisters, Edna Jollymore and Mary Sanford, and brother Uhlan. Visitation was scheduled for Saturday, December 13 from 7-9 p.m. in the J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy 215, Summerville, and the funeral service Sunday December 14 at 2 p.m. in Newport Baptist Church, Scotch Village, Rev. Geoff Dejong officiating with private family committal service in Sandyland Cemetery, Walton Woods Road.
