November 23 to November 29, 2008 continued SAYAT, Dr. Gregorio Lacopia – 75, Aberdeen Street, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born May 8, 1933 in Calumpang, Quezon, Philippines, he was a son of Florencia Lacopia Sayat (Lucena City, Philippines), and the late Jorge Sayat. Having graduated in 1959 from the University of Santo Tomas College of Medicine and Surgery in Manila, Philippines, he completed his anaesthesia residency in Halifax, NS, at the Victoria General Hospital, from 1967 to 1971, after which, he remained at the Victoria General Hospital as a fellow from 1971 to 1972. From 1972 to 1974 he joined the Issac Walton Killam Hospital in the division of Paediatric Anaesthesia as a Clinical Fellow. Dr. Sayat served on staff at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital from 1976 to 2007, retiring as Senior Staff Anaesthesiologist, and where he had served as the Chief Anaesthesiologist from 1979 to 1995, having also been the Treasurer of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital Medical Staff Executive Committee from 1998 to 2007. During his career he also worked at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Chatham, NB, Roseway General Hospital, in Shelburne, NS and Digby General Hospital, in Digby, NS. He was a member of the Canadian Medical Association, Nova Scotia Medical Society, Western Branch Medical Society, Canadian Anaesthetist Society, Medical Protective Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. W.E. Young Fourth Degree Assembly, Yarmouth. He was also a Past President (2 Terms) of the Filipino Association of Nova Scotia. Dr Sayat was the recipient of many awards, including the 1999 Award of Appreciation for 25 years of service to the Western Regional Health Centre. He also received the 1999 Award of Appreciation for Service as Department Chief Yarmouth Regional Hospital, the 2003 Senior Membership Award from the Medical Society of Nova Scotia, and the 2005 Award of Appreciation from South West Health, for 29 years of service. He also received a Knights of Columbus Community Work Award. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Maria Asuncion “Siony” (Dorneo) Sayat; a son, Jorge Dorneo (Alessia) Sayat, Montreal; daughters, Dr. Cynthia Nova (Eric) Sayat-Geis, Yarmouth; Elizabeth Christine Sayat, Toronto; daughter-in-law, Dr. Edna Regala Sayat, Rancho Cucamonga, CA; grandchildren, Gregory Regala Sayat, Lauren Regala Sayat, Sophie Elizabeth Sayat Geis and Olivia Maria Sayat Geis; brothers, Meynardo (Angelita) Sayat, Lucena City, Philippines; Rolando (Maria Luisa) Sayat, Dartmouth; a sister, Myrla (Amado) Foronda, Halifax. He was predeceased by his father, Jorge Sayat, as well as by a son, Alexander Dorneo Sayat; siblings, Angelito, Emaliano, Edith and Carlito. Visitation took place from 2-4 and again from 6-9 on Tuesday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, December 3, from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, 43 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated, assisted by Father Chinedu Chukwu, Father Clarence Thibeau and Deacon Stephen Bourque. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth. Memorial donations may be made to St. Ambrose Cathedral Parish, the Catholic Women’s League (St. Ambrose Council), or to the Msgr. W. E. November 23 to November 29, 2008 continued LEEMAN, Glenn Clayton, 59, of Tiverton, died Nov. 30, 2008. Funeral Dec. 3 in Tiverton United Baptist Church. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.
November 23 to November 29, 2008 continued MASON, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Alice (nee Richardson) passed away peacefully at 82 years of age on 23 November 2008 in Burlington Ontario. Betty was born a twin with her brother Charles on 21st August 1926 to parents Hallam & Evie Richardson of Brooklyn, Queens County, Nova Scotia. Betty attended school in Lunenburg and later business school in Halifax. Betty & Sam moved with their three girls to Toronto in 1959 & settled in the Beaches area in the early 1960’s. Betty had a keen interest in current events and we all shared in her wry, observational wit. Mum will be deeply missed and very much loved. Betty is predeceased by her husband Samuel George Mason (1996) and is survived by her three daughters: Barbara Walker (Mason), Victoria BC; Susan Mason, Sarnia Ontario; and Nancy Mirabelli (Mason), Burlington Ontario; grandchildren: Nicholas, Max, Ben, Justin, Rebecca & Brandon; Betty’s twin brother Charles Richardson, wife Elizabeth of Brooklyn, Queens County and their family.
