November 30 to December 6, 2008 Marion Elizabeth Richardson - 93, Berwick, Kings Co. passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008, in the Grand View Manor. Born in Clarence, Annapolis Co. she was a daughter of the late Charles and Lillian (Ruggles) Crispe. Marion was a member of the Berwick Baptist Church. She had been employed with Avon Foods Ltd., Berwick and later at the Stedmans Store in Berwick. Surviving are sons, Bert (Bev) Richardson, Berwick; Henry (Eris) Richardson, Hammonds Plains; daughter, Lillian (Wilfred Morton) Creemer, Don Mills, Ont.; step-daughter, Edna Adams, Steam Mill; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice “Bonnie” Keddy, Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Henry Richardson; an infant son, William; step-daughter, Clara; siblings, Frances, Thorton, Dorothy, Charlie, and two sisters in infancy. There was no visitation. Funeral service for Marion was held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). Rev. November 30 to December 6, 2008 Bernice Annette Brown– 88, of Windsor, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of the Lord and surrounded by her family on Monday, December 1, 2008 in Dykeland Lodge. Born in Bridgetown, Annapolis County, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Atwell) Greenlund. Bernice devoted her life to her family and to caring for others. She had been an adherent of the Wesleyan Church in Yarmouth and North Alton. She is survived by two daughters, Frances (Reginald) O’Brien, Kentville; Valerie Brown (Gerry Vautour), Dartmouth; two sons, Darrell (Kathy) and Stephen (Lisa), all of Windsor; a special son, Ken Swan, Windsor; special daughter, Alva Chase, Berwick; two sisters, Elizabeth (Harry) Cottenden, Windsor; Madeline (Carleton) Schofield, Hantsport; eight grandchildren, Vanessa O’Brien, Dean (Kim) O’Brien, Troy Swinamer, Tanya Swinamer (Barry), Jodi Brown (BJ), Tamara Brown, Evan Brown, Christopher Brown; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Robert Brown; two sons, Robert and Brian; three sisters, Florence, Winnifred and Harriette; an infant sister, Evangeline; two brothers, Harry and John “Russell”. November 30 to December 6, 2008 SHANKEL-WOOLFREY, Sheri Maureen – (June 6, 1955 - December 2, 2008): Daughters Sandy (husband Mark Fahey and grandsons Alex and Liam), Katie (husband Randy King) and Emily (Mike Dobbin) sadly announce the passing of their mother Sheri Shankel-Woolfrey at the Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. She had a 13 year challenge with primary bilary cirrhosis later complicated by liver cancer. Also leaving to mourn, mother Dorothy Mae Shankel (father Earl, deceased); sisters Suanne Sampson (Liverpool, Nova Scotia) and Cathy Blake (Alexander, Maine), their husbands and families. Sheri was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. She graduated from Mount St. Vincent University and moved to Newfoundland in 1976 to accept a teaching position on New World Island. What was to be a two-year temporary stay, in Newfoundland, became a home for the past three decades. Sheri completed eighteen years of teaching, sixteen of which were at J.M. Olds Collegiate, Twillingate before retiring due to ill health. She was a committed educator both inside the classroom and out. She volunteered her time and skills with numerous youth and community organizations; most recently the St. John’s Status of Women’s Council and Women’s Centre. She was recognized for her abilities with a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and a Commonwealth Youth Service Award plus numerous other recognitions. Following her retirement, Sheri became associated with the School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, a partnership she very much enjoyed. Sheri lived life with spirit, touched with a healthy dose of reality and practicality. A few of her favorite past-times were gardening, with a special love of spring flowers, creating heirloom quality handwork for family and friends, keeping “tummies” full and creative writing. Her daughters always knew they were the highlight and pride of her life. They shared a very special bond with her. The laughter and good times they shared became even more cherished as her illnesses progressed. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in celebration of Sheri’s life took place on Friday, December 5, 2008 from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Sheri’s desire was that donations be given to Bridges of Hope Food Bank or the Marguerite’s Place Building Fund. Born in Wolfville, he was a son of the late Earl and Stella (Atwell) Davidson. He was a member and employee of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville for over 30 years, where he served on the Executive, the Poppy Fund, the Sick and Visiting Committee and had been Chairman of the Dance Committee. He enjoyed movies, especially western and action/adventure. November 30 to December 6, 2008 Vernon Llewellyn Coleman – 84, of Black Rock, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Upper Burlington, Hants County, he was a son of the late Cornelius and Grace (Brydon) Coleman. He worked at several jobs before being employed at the Kentville Research Station, from where he retired. He was fond of Gospel music and enjoyed attending hymn sings. Vernon was known for his generosity to those in need. He is survived by two sisters, Alice, Ontario and Evelyn Doherty, Black Rock; a brother, Douglas “Dick”, Black Rock; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Usher. There was no visitation by family request. Born in Shelburne he was a son of the late Warren and Zella Mae (Faye) Acker. Norman served overseas during the Second World War with the Pictou Highlanders in North Africa, Sicily and was wounded in Monte Casino, Italy. Norman worked as a laborer and had a small farm in Shelburne. He enjoyed watching the Blue Jays play baseball. November 30 to December 6, 2008 James Illsley MacKenzie “Jim” Keddy– 82, of Forest Home, Kings County, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008 at home. Born in North River, Kings County, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Margaret (Arenburg) Keddy. He had been employed with Standard Paving Ltd. as a heavy equipment operator for 28 years. He also enjoyed farming. He was a dedicated father, a devoted grandfather and spent his life raising his own children, two of his grandsons and many foster children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and going for drives. He worked in sheet metal and had been employed with Moore’s Heating and later with H.B. Mechanical, Wolfville, from where he retired. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and playing the fiddle. November 30 to December 6, 2008 HAZELTON, Dora Mae - It is with great sadness the family announces her passing on December 5, 2008, in St. Andrews, N.B. Dora was born in Argyle Sound in 1922, a daughter of the late Sydney and Annie Goodwin. Dora was predeceased by her first husband, Bruce Churchill and second husband, Prescott Hazelton. Also, her sons, Eric and Donnie and special granddaughters, Aimee Bain, Churchill; brothers, Edgar and Leonard; sisters, Cynthia and Gertrude. Dora is survived by sister, Regina Snyder, Florida; and daughter, Donna Grant (Bob), St. Andrews N.B.; son, Bruce Churchill (Susan), Yarmouth; and daughter, Anne O'Leary, Florida. Dora will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bruce, Donna, and Anne sincerely thank all her friends from Yarmouth and St. Andrews, especially her many friends from Passamaquoddy Lodge with all their love and kindness. November 30 to December 6, 2008 Vernon Hugh Eaton – 82, of JawBone Corner, Kings County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Friday, December 5, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Port Williams, he was son of the late Hugh and Emma (Eaton) Eaton. He served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War with the First Canadian Airborne Parachute Battalion. For 36 years, he was an associate of Imperial Oil Limited, superintendent of Bulk Plants in Middleton, Digby, Antigonish and Bridgewater, Fuel Oil Distributor in the Halifax area, and Distribution Manager for Esso Home Comfort in Halifax, Dartmouth and surrounding areas. He was a member of the Canard United Church, where he served on the Board of Stewards. He served as a director of the Windsor Elms for 11 years. He was much interested in the JawBone Corner Cemetery as Plot Keeper and as a member of the community as a whole. He kept an interest in his brother’s farm and its well-being and made himself available when needed as an extra hand. He was involved in furniture repairs and upholstering as a hobby. Through the years, he was an ardent hunter and fisherman until poor health prevented these enjoyments. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 52 years, Betty (Schafheitlin); a daughter, Brenda Lawlor (Fred), Port Credit, Ontario; a son, Robert (Deitre), Toronto; grandchildren, Freddie, Jonathan and Emma Lawlor, Wyatt and Grace Eaton; a brother, Malcolm (Mildred), Canard. He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Pond. At Vern’s request, cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation. A celebration of Vern’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2008 in the Canard United Church, Reverend Ray A. Francis and Reverend Waldo Elliott officiating. November 30 to December 6, 2008 Frances Mary Bishop- Passed away in Halifax after a brief illness at the age of 90 years. She is lovingly remembered by her brother James Borden of Lower Canard, Kings. Co., N.S.; son David (Port Alberni). daughters Mary (Calgary). Ruth (Moncton), Heather (Ottawa); grandchilden Scott, Jennifer, Heather, Karen, Christa, Tim, Andrew, Pamela; great-grandchildren Natalie, Alex, Morgan, Heidi, Marcus, Graeme, and many nieces and nephews. Daughter of the late Scott Emerson and Estelle Delia Borden of Lower Canard, N.S., she was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Boyd R. Bishop, of Round Hill, Annapolis Co., N.S. in 1980, and a brother Charles and a sister Grace. Boyd and Frances served in the pastoral charges for the United Church of Canada in Guysborough, N.S., Elderbank, N.S., Minto, N.B., Dalhousie, N.B., Moncton, N.B., Bible Hill, N.S., Halifax, N.S. She is survived by three sons, Thomas (Twila), Bridgetown; Robert (Jane), Dartmouth; Gerald (Geraldine), Lawrencetown; 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Ovide; brothers, William and Clarence and grand-daughter, Kimberly. Cremation has taken place. November 30 to December 6, 2008 PATTERSON, Leslie Weldon “Les” - 86, Summerville, passed away peacefully November 30, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Tennecape, he was a son of the late Robbie and Minnie (Lingard) Patterson. He is survived by his sons, Blair (Marilyn), Walton; Laurie (Judy), Summerville; daughters, Dorothy (Wayne), Kentville; Deborah (Russell), Tennecape and Denise (Stephen), Kempt Shore; grandchildren, Rose, Amy, Wayne, Leslie, Pam, Jeff, Brian and Barry; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Melissa, Brad, Evan, Rebecca, Abigail and Adrienne; his brother, Ellis (Frances), Tennecape; many nieces and nephews. Les was predeceased by his wife, Hazel (McLellan); brothers, John, Eugene, Max, Lloyd, Clifford and Carleton and sisters, Etta Jean and Alma, both in infancy; Freda Hatfield and Mae Cox. Les worked in the woods as a lumberman when he volunteered to serve his country. He enlisted in the army in February, 1943 and served until October, 1945. He was a veteran of the Second World War —First Battalion S D & G Highlanders. He landed on Juno Beach June 6, 1944 “D Day”. He was a Corporal when discharged from the army. Better known as “Pat” or “Patty” to his regiment and friends, he served in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. He received the American Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with Military operation as Section Leader of D Company on June 17, 1944 and April 12, 1945. He was a Bren gunner during the war. After being discharged he went to work for Dresser Minerals. He was an avid gardener. Les was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 166 Noel, and enjoyed going to war reunions every year and the numerous trips overseas with his comrades and friends. He lived a long life enriched by his loving family. Visitation was held Wednesday, December 3, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a legion service being held at 6:45 p.m. in J. November 30 to December 6, 2008 SMITH, Mary Jane - 98, Truro, formerly of Windsor, Hants Co., passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at home with her family by her side. Born in Brierly Brook, May 12, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Valentine and Margaret (MacDonald) Chisholm. Mary’s married life was spent in Windsor. She was very devoted to serving God through his church. She was president of the Alter Society for 25 years, a choir member for 27 years and a lay minister of the Eucharist for 23 years. Mary is survived by her daughters, Margaret Kelly, Welland; Marion (Ian) Palmer, Windsor; Janet (Alan) Fleury, Truro; grandchildren, Rod, Michael, and Sean Kelly; Kim Fraser; Sharon Purdy; Karen Currie; Wendy Harvie; Rae Ann and Michelle Fleury; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Liboiron, Montreal; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Harold V. (1989); brothers, Dan, Sylvester, Grant and Joe; sisters, Marie Lake; Isabel Bethune; Babe Hackett and Mary Adderley. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, December 4. Funeral Mass was held 11 a.m. Friday, December 5, in the Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Father Michael Walsh officiated. Interment followed in St. John the Evangelist Parish Cemetery, Wiley Ave., Windsor, followed by a reception in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. November 30 to December 6, 2008 POTHIER, Réné Jean – 94, of Abram’s River, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born June 8, 1914 in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late Sylvain and Magdeleine Pothier. Réné was a lobster fisherman in his life. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Christine Rose (LeBlanc), as well as son Alvin Pothier, Abram’s River; daughter Anna (Blair) Zinck, Charlottetown, PE; and sister, Betty (Laurie) Pothier, Wedgeport. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by brothers Eloi and Edgar; and sisters Kate Boudreau, Emma Babin, Lillian Pothier, and Yvonne Hemeon. Visitation took place on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9, with prayers at 8 pm, followed by the funeral on Friday, December 5, at 11 am, all at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home at 29 Albert St., Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Burial followed in the St. Anne’s Parish Cemetery, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau. November 30 to December 6, 2008 DOUCETTE, Mary “Emily” - Passed away quietly on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the QEII Health Sciences Center in Halifax. She was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on January 30, 1916 the daughter of Némerize Doucette and Mathurine Amirault. Emily was a homemaker and dedicated mother and wife, and volunteered as a member of the woman’s group of Our Lady of Fatima church in Yarmouth. She enjoyed many years of team bowling, winning several trophies. For the last two years she had been a resident of Melville Gardens, assisted living facility in Halifax. She is predeceased by her sister Eva (Tedford) of Ontario, brother Raymond Amirault of New Brunswick and husband Gustave Doucette of Yarmouth. She leaves behind a sister Madeline (Darrow) of Virginia Beach, two sons Carl Doucette and wife Frances, Gregory Doucette and wife Audrey of French Village, N.S. and grandchildren Jarrette Doucette, Michelle Doucette, Cathrine Doucette and Alicia Doucette. Visitation took place from 7-9 Tuesday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10 AM, Wednesday, December 10 from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. November 30 to December 6, 2008 MacLEOD, April Lynn - 42, Yarmouth, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. Born in Yarmouth on April 17, 1966, April was the daughter of Dawn and Jim MacLeod. Besides her parents she is survived by her daughter, Emily; son, Connor; brothers, Fraser (Tracey), Yarmouth; Gordon, White Rock, B.C.; sister, Elizabeth (Darren) Churchill; nieces, Cassidy and Isabella Churchill; nephew, Tyler MacLeod and paternal grandmother, Alma MacLeod. April had great love of family, especially for her children, as well as for Parker, her dog. Other keen interests included flower gardening and collecting angels and thimbles. She had a great passion for animals. April was an LPN and was in the midst of recertifying her license at the time of her death. She was predeceased by grandparents, Russell and Isabelle Pitman, and Neil MacLeod. Visitation was held Saturday, December 6 from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Funeral service was held Sunday, December 7 at 3 p.m. from Zion United Baptist Church, Parade St., Yarmouth, Rev. Brian Wallace officiated. November 30 to December 6, 2008 HILL, Douglas Gordon, 86, Clyde River, Shelburne Co., N.S., passed away in Roseway Hospital on Thursday, December 4, 2008. Born July 15, 1922 in Clyde River, he was the son of the late Edith (McKay), Clyde River. Douglas was a Legion member and a Second World War veteran. He loved to play cribbage and darts. He was also an avid sports fisherman and hunter. He loved to spend his time outdoors. He is survived by his stepsons, Leroy, Oromocto, N.B., Gene (Connie), Sandy Point; daughter, Rosalie Miller, Thunder Bay, Ont. He had many grandchildren and great grandchildren and many great, great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (MacAdams), son, Donald; daughters, Marilyn, Carolyn, granddaughter Rhonda and a great grandchild, Dylan. Visitation was held on Sunday, December 7 in H. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, with Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating. Interment followed at the Clyde River Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
November 30 to December 6, 2008 SMITH, Douglas Churchill, 88, Shelburne, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 5, 2008 in Roseway Manor Nursing Home. Born in Shelburne on April 8, 1920, he was a son of the late J. Chandley and Blanche (Harris) Smith, one of a large family of 14. As a boy, Doug helped his father in the family business, The Shelburne Barrel Factory. Then, in 1941, he joined the Canadian Air Force and served for five years as a Sergeant in the Decoding Division. After the war, Doug worked briefly for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce before he began his 35 year career as a civil servant with the Province of Nova Scotia, Department of Justice. Doug was an avid golfer, gardener and fisherman, and he spent many retirement years doing what he loved best. He and his late wife, Adeline, were married for more than 60 years and they enjoyed travelling to many countries during their lifetime, experiencing life to the fullest. He was a very devoted man, both to his church and his family. He served in his church, Trinity United, in Shelburne throughout his life as a member of the choir, as an elder and a trustee. He was a 57 year member of Albert Lodge #30, and served as a Past Master, Past Secretary, Past Chaplain, Past Grand Steward and Past District Grand Chaplain. Doug is survived by son, John C. Smith and his daughter, Nancy (Terry) McIntyre; grandchildren, Peter (Dolly); Joseph and Mark McIntyre; Heather (Matthew) Banfield; Trevor Smith; Craig (Laura) Smith; twin great-granddaughters, Heidi Adeline and Alexis Kizzie Banfield; twin sister, Dorothy Morrison; brothers, Arthur, Harold and Gerald. He was predeceased by his wife, Adeline; sisters, Jean, Marion and Shirley; brothers, Lawrence, Earle, Gordon, Wilfred, Donald and William and daughter in-law, Beverly. Funeral service was held on Monday, December 8, 2008 in Trinity United Church with Rev. Joanne McFadden officiating. Interment was in Pine Grove cemetery.
