SMITH, Clinton (Clint) Lowell Smith, 77, June 16, 1931 – November 5, 2008, Newellton, Cape Sable Island, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at home. Clinton was the only son of the late Edwin and Avis Smith. He and his sister, Phyllis were born and raised in Newellton, Cape Sable Island. A retired lobster fisherman, Clinton spent the majority of his working life on the water. As a young man Clinton was employed on the Canadian Steamship Line Boat “Hochelaga”, lake boats and Irving Oil tankers. Shipmates from that time remember him most for the way he was always kidding around and how he loved to laugh. Clinton and Mona (Nickerson) were married in Halifax in December of 1955. Clinton served as an engineer for three years with the Army. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Clark’s Harbour Branch. Clinton and Mona enjoyed life to the fullest, from their early days, traveling across Canada, to eventually returning “home” to Cape Sable Island. Clint built his own home and together they raised their two children, Wayne and Rhonda. Clint was a craftsman. He helped both of his children design and build a house. He built several skiffs before he was 19 years old and later built gunning boats and mossing punts. Clinton was known for his sharp wit and keen sense of humor. A strong man who overcame many hardships. Through it all he never lost the sparkle in his eye or his love of laughter. He took great pride in his family and loved spending time with them. He especially looked forward to visits with his grandchildren and never missed a chance to reminisce. An avid outdoorsman, Clinton enjoyed hunting, target shooting, carving decoys, collecting “make and brake” engines and days on the road “yard saling” with his wife and best friend, Mona. Clint loved to drive; he was on the road early most mornings, making his rounds, chatting and kidding around with his many friends on the wharf, stopping by Ducky’s to show him his latest find, or off to Wayne Crowell’s to visit with the guys in the workshop. Then, it would be home to pick up Mona and off they would go. On any given day, you could meet the two of them traveling down the highway. There are very few back roads in Nova Scotia that they haven’t been on. Clinton leaves behind his wife Mona (Nickerson) of 52 years; sister, Phyllis Dorey; son, Wayne (Jill), Bear Point; daughter, Rhonda (Dale) Belliveau, Woods Harbour; two grandsons, Michael (Melanie) and David (Erica); 4 great granddaughters, Caleigh, Kelsey, Emily and Peyton. The funeral service was held on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at H. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Barrington. Interment was at Newellton Cemetery, Newellton, Cape Sable Island.
