Saulnier’s 63 points stuns Barrington defense
At six foot five, Cory Saulnier is used to walking tall, but after scoring 63 points Wednesday night in a high school game against Barrington, he is likely wondering if he’ll ever come down.
The Digby Regional centre was tripped, fouled and fouled some more, but by game’s end on the Barrington court, he had accounted for most of the Mariners’ points in an 86-76 victory over the Barons.
“He played a phenomenal game,” said Mariners coach Tyler Colwell. He thinks 63 points by one player is likely a DRHS record.
The Barons played a one-on-one defense and didn’t change that strategy through the game, “but Saulnier was scoring over two or three guys,” said Colwell. “We left him in as long as they didn’t change.”
Fouling the big centre wasn’t the answer as he made most of his foul shots, as well.
Barrington is a Division 2 team--one rung above the Mariners—that finished fifth in its division last year, so Colwell thinks the Mariners could be in for a good year.
They’ve already matched their winning total of last year of two games, he noted.
“Everything is new to the kids—new defense, new rules, but they’re adjusting.”
The Lady Mariners also won on Barrington’s floor, playing to a 57-50 win following the boys. Coached by Kim Robinson, an assistant last year with Colwell on the boys’ team, the girls play their first home game Dec. 3.
The senior boys are in Shelburne Friday and Saturday for a tournament and games against Hants North and Shelburne will give a better indication of the Mariners’ prospects, said Colwell.
The boys also have a home game Dec. 3 when they will match up again with Barrington.
