New Deputy in town

After eight years, the long-time councillor felt ready to take on the extra responsibilities of Deputy Mayor. She was nominated by previous Deputy Mayor Doug Adams and elected by council members on Nov. 3.

“It’s very humbling. I was very proud of the fact that I was nominated by past Deputy Mayor Adams, who I know was so proud to have the role,” says Deputy Mayor Norman.

As Deputy Mayor, she will chair council in Mayor Leefe’s absence, and attend events involving the Region of Queens.

“When you assume the position of deputy mayor, part of that responsibility is guiding council towards decision making,” she says.

It is clear she is very proud of Queens County and the accomplishments of council during her terms.

“We are very fortunate in what we have. We probably have some of the best outdoor physical assets. We have Keji Seaside, Keji Park, Trails, and Beach Meadows.

“When I’ve looked back over the last eight years, what we’ve accomplished as a Region is a good thing.”

One of the very recent decisions made was to purchase a new generator for the West Queens Recreation Centre, something she has been working towards for the past four years.

“I am so pleased that this Committee of the Whole made the recommendation for the generator for West Queens Rec.”

The recommendation was made on Nov. 10, and was expected to pass in council on Nov. 17.

The next challenge facing council she sees is getting Queens Place built and running.

“The biggest challenge is the building of the community centre. In my opinion it’s in regards that we make sure it is highly accessible.”

She adds it would create a great opportunity for Queens County to become a fit community.

“It’s so much more than an arena and a pool.”

Norman was first elected in 2000 to represent District 1, and in the past election won by acclamation.
