A little time for literacy
Dr. John C. Wickwire Academy’s important Reading Tutor Program needs more volunteers to help bring the gift of literacy to Grades 2-4 students.
Volunteer Coordinator Anne Dunlop says helping students needing extra reading time is rewarding, which is why many of their volunteers return year after year.

“It’s great to feel like your helping the kids,” she says. “Two hours of your valuable time once a week this winter or next spring would greatly benefit a child.”

The 75-minute sessions are held each Monday and Wednesday from the middle of Jan. to the middle of March and from after March Break until the end of May.

Volunteers can choose one day a week or two.

The program was started and continues to be run by dedicated teachers who recognize the need, Dunlop says.

However, she says while offering her thanks, “The program would not have been possible if it had not been supported by many devoted volunteers.”

About 40 students benefited last year. About eight more volunteers are needed.
