A residence on Highway 1 in Aylesford was extensively damaged in a fire early Monday morning, the cause of which was under investigation by the fire marshal's office.

Aylesford and District firefighters responded to the alarm around 3:25 a.m. and immediately called for mutual aid from Berwick and Kingston. Eventually, Kentville and Waterville and District firefighters and equipment were paged to the scene.

"It's totalled," Aylesford Fire Chief Jack Young said around 9 a.m.

"When we arrived on the scene, there was a lot of smoke, and we could hear the roar of flames."

Firefighters remained on the scene until around 9:30 a.m.

Although the exact cause of the blaze was yet to be determined earlier today, Young said it appeared to have started in the basement, though he stressed, "we can't be sure until we get a closer look."

The home on Highway 1, formerly for many years the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Nichols, was being renovated. There was no one living there at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries as a result.
