The Avon River Rats are well into a second season but are still searching for a new head coach to lead the team to the top of the Maritime North Junior C Hockey Championships.
Team vice president Kevin Burgess said the River Rats are already eight games into a second season but, after a second game, coach Will Brown needed to leave his team to pursue an employment opportunity out of province. “What a new coach would bring is stability,” Burgess said.
As a non-profit team trying to promote local hockey, it would be ideal to find someone from around this area willing to coach the team, Burgess said. “The person who wants to fill in this position just needs to have the basic coaching level required by Hockey Nova Scotia.”
The fee for the course would be covered so anyone interested just needs a bit of hockey knowledge and time to commit to the team, Burgess said. “It’s a big time commitment, no question, with one practice a week and games running Friday to Sunday on the weekends.”
The players are keen and the team is overcoming initial growing pains as many returned for a second year, Burgess said. “There’s a real opportunity to finish high in the league.”
Anyone interested in taking charge of the River Rats as a head coach can contact Kevin Burgess at 866-4655 or team president Tim Cochrane at 684-9327. Those looking for more information on the River Rats can also visit the website:
